ARRGGG — this will never end i think!!
Matthew started throwing up yesterday. First time, his tube came out of his mouth… it scared him so much! We are talking projectile vomitting and tons of it. Then we gave him dinner and he threw up whatever he took. So we spoke to ped and he said to just put in more through tube at night… problem is he kept throwing up whatever he had in stomach and he cried ALL NIGHT from 8pm to 8am this morning — he was inconsolable. So at 8am i called ped and he said he was away today š but to go to ER. We got there and told them he had a fever all night (104) and that i had given him some tylenol a couple of times etc etc… the doctor said he did not really seem like he had a cold, maybe just a bit congested and nothing seemed to be going on with stomach — his poop was also totally fine today and last night, so she sent us home with some tylenol.
Now Matthew will take nothing by mouth other than a lot of water, he still has a high fever and i donĀ“t really want to feed him through tube because when he throws up it comes out through his mouth. He is not sleeping either and is SO CRANKY. Last time he slept was from 6 to 7pm yesterday and he is so worked up.
I feel like we were doing OK with feedings and his schedule and now this has disturbed it all and ped already said that this is a big step backwards right now.
The ped is back tomorrow so if still has a fever we will go see him and he said he will order tests etc because it does not seem like a stomach virus to him or a cold…
February 4, 2006 at 10:11 am #711hellbenntKeymasterbig hug to you guys!
February 4, 2006 at 10:52 am #717AnonymousInactiveOh Thais – I’m so sorry to hear about this. Please keep me posted – big hugs to you and Matthew.
February 4, 2006 at 11:04 am #718AnonymousInactiveI am so sorry that this happening! I hope the ped gets to the bottom of this!
February 4, 2006 at 1:56 pm #735AnonymousInactiveOh Thais, I’m so sorry to hear about poor little Matthew! He has been through so much already. Is he feeling any better or does he still have the high fever?
I think i posted somewhere else how you can actually give tylenol and advil staggered to bring down a fever… keeps a constant dose of meds in the system.
Could the projectle puking be from the high fever? I know that when it’s that high they sometimes get a bit delirious and agitated, and the hysterical screaming can cause vomitting. I hope it passes really soon and will be thinking of you.
February 4, 2006 at 3:37 pm #736AnonymousInactiveThat’s horrible! I hope it is just a 24 hour bug and you all get back onto your schedule! Hugs to you and matthew!
February 4, 2006 at 11:09 pm #756AnonymousInactiveJust thinking of you and Matthew before going to bed for the night. Hope he’s doing better and the fever has gone down.
February 5, 2006 at 5:45 am #779AnonymousInactiveThank you all for your thoughts… Matthew is still doing pretty badly. He is unable to keep any food down at all so he is just on pedialyte. At least, he is drinking it pretty well, and he did about 15ounces yesterday, so doctor said that is what is most important, to keep him hydrated.
I think i can hear some phlems but i do not understand why his temperature is still so high — ped said that phlems will make him throw up because he swallows them and his stomach is full. We will see him tomorrow but i am just so upset that all the hard work on getting him to eat has gone out the window.
Lori — thanks. The doctor said that if things regarding the fever are not better then to give him Nolotil… donĀ“t know if it is the same name in canada, but pretty strong for children, but he cannot go on with this temperature much longer!
February 5, 2006 at 7:19 am #787AnonymousInactiveThais, I can imagine how frustrated and scared you must feel. It is must be so awful to have worked so hard, only to have another setback. But hopefully, Matthew will recover from this quickly, and move forward as he was starting to do. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.
February 5, 2006 at 7:33 am #788AnonymousInactiveThanks Lori… he would not take any solids and just took 2 ounces from the bottle (first time in a month i think!) which he projectile vomitted after 30 seconds…. he is now sleeping on my momĀ“s shoulder (again, he has not done this for a couple of months, so he must be totally exhausted!) and we gave him teh Nolotil because he has a horrible fever… when he wakes, we will try to give him some food and if he cannot hold it down we have to go to the ER so that they get an IV into him š and the ped will be there at 6am tomorrow morning… i just hope we donĀ“t have to go there… but on the other hand, maybe they can do some tests and see if he has something else?
February 5, 2006 at 8:01 am #790AnonymousInactiveHi Thais,
I am sorry you are going through this! Have you tried the Tylenol suppositories, so you don’t have to worry that Matthew is going to throw them up? Not sure if they are available to you there. Also, even if you have to go back, it would be helpful if they could get him good and hydrated. It is really hard to catch them up when they fall behind on fluids, and it ususally helps so much! If you go back to the ER, I would definitely as them to give him some fluids.
I am hoping things rapidly improve for you soon!!!
February 5, 2006 at 8:47 am #792AnonymousInactiveThanks Anne Marie
Yes, we have something similar to the tylenol suppositories… it is paracetamol (is it called same in english?) and yes, we prefer those and are giving him those but fever was not coming down so we have switched to something stronger. He has the tube, so we waited until he was done throwing up and then just put it through his tube… he has not thrown anything up and has been able to keep the pedialyte down so hopefully fever will be reduced.
On the dehydration – yes, i know it is hard… doctor just said to try and give him more liquid (Ie water or pedialyte) through the tube….
February 5, 2006 at 9:26 am #793AnonymousInactiveThais,
I am so sorry to hear what has happened to Matthew. What an ordeal this poor baby has been through!!! I am praying for him to get well soon. When my little Johnny doesn’t do well, my mom always tells me it’s a test from God. This baby is going to take a great mission in the future, so God wants to “train” him to be a tough guy even on this early stage of his life. This is just my mom’s old Chinese philosophy, but it does help me to take easy all the downs. Who knows someday Matthew may grow to become one of the strongest guys in the world!

February 5, 2006 at 9:48 am #795AnonymousInactiveI’m so sorry that he still has the fever, Thais! I know you probably kno this already, but strpping them down to the diaper heps- that’s what the er always did for Sarah. They also told us to avoid dunking in COLD baths like our parents used to do b/c it works momentarily but causes a rebound effect from the shivering- we were told the same thing about a cold cloth on the head. For us we have found that making a very lukewarm (not cold but barely warm bath and going in with her helps to lower her temps)- also the staggering of ibuprofin and acetaminophen has really helped us. I don’t think we have the drug that you’re using with matthew in Canada. I hope they find the cause soon… treating it usually helps to stop the fever faster. Also, I too like to think like Johnny’s mom- I believe that we will raise strong, good-willed children who will one day go on to accomplish wonderful things. Hang on to this thought, anf give sweet Matthew a hug from us all.
thinking of you. please keep us posted.
February 5, 2006 at 10:07 am #798AnonymousInactiveThanks Lori… i think all of our kids are going to be wonderful… i sometimes wonder if this website will be here when they grow older and they will be able to see what we went through š
THe drug is magnesium metamizol… it is used for high fever when nothing else seems to work. Well, he has no fever right now!! He slept for about 1 hour or so and woke up sweating a ton, but his fever has gone.. he has something like 100.5 or so, so much much better. Still throwing up but hopefully with the fever under control, he will feel a little better.
Thanks for the tips… my mom actually wanted to put him in cold bath and i had to fight her like crazy last night š
