I am totally confused here. My DD was diagnosed with silent reflux when she was around 1 1/2 mnths old ( she had a cold before and it jst woudnt go ) . She was put on Zantac which didnt help much. The she suddendly started refusing the bottle. woul drink around jst about an ounce or half every 2 hrs. She was started on prevacid.twice a day it started working after two weeks and my baby was a changed happy feeder . she eat aupto 2 1/2 to 3 ounce evry 2 hrs. She is BBf. however at around 4 1/2 mnths old she again got the cold. I had also jst started her on rice cereal by then. Now again she is refusing the bottle and eating only about 2 ounces every 2 hrs with a LOT of difficulty. Am not sure what to do . Feeding times are so stressful. She is still on 2ml of prevacid ( compounded ).Not sure if I need to get her dosage increased . Her reflux definatelys sounds agrrevated as I hear more wet burps, growling in the stomach and distress after feeds…Did anyone face the same problem…need help
March 26, 2012 at 12:43 pm #70114AnonymousInactiveA few thoughts.
She may need a higher dose of Prevacid. Most doctors do not give a high enough dose and she’s been on it for a while so she could have outgrown the dose.
The rice cereal could be bothering her as well. I’d stop that until you know for sure. Rice cereal always constipated my babies and caused lots of gas. We had to do oatmeal instead.
Have you had her ears checked? If she’s had a cold it’s possible that it’s caused an ear infection.
March 27, 2012 at 11:08 am #70118AnonymousInactiveThanks a lot for the reply Christine…:)
I too am doughting the rice cereal. Planning to stop it today and then watch her for a few days…I dont think she has a ear infection cause she doesnt have any pain and she is a happy baby ( except when its feeding time ). she doesnt have cold any more . just that I observed that after her cold she usually is fussy during feeds ( which goes on for around 2 weeks 🙁 )I think I’ll start off with stopping the rice cereal. Will keep you posted :))March 27, 2012 at 7:26 pm #70126hellbenntKeymasterPrevacid 101:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)

March 29, 2012 at 6:34 pm #70132AnonymousInactiveBTW do you think i should get the soul tabs of prevacid instead of the compounded one. My pharmacists gives me a bottle for 2 week . It is very expensive too as compounded medicines are not covered by my insurance company.
March 29, 2012 at 6:44 pm #70133hellbenntKeymasterif you can get solutabs, yes you can give those a try. however, they need to be given on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later…
This is all in the link I gave in the post above your last postOTC (over-the-counter) prevacid w/ applesauce, pedialyte, etc: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14642&PID=113339#113339
OTC zegerid: has the drug prilosec in it and it has buffers, so that it can be given w/ food. Otherwise, you must give a PPI on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later.Examples of situations where you have to follow the ’30 minute rule’:if you use prevacid solutabs or, if you use either prevacid or prilosec capsules (you would open them up and give the beads inside the capsule- you would give on an empty stomach and administer the beads w/ 1/2 tsp of applesauce & then you would follow w/ a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later).why should you care about zegerid? because you can give the medicine at any time, even with food, and you don’t have to worry about timing it around an empty stomach.
zegerid mixing:
Mixing instructions Zegerid OTC: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14637
Are there other options?
yes, you can buy over the counter capsules and administer the beads inside the capsule. (see above link for instructions and also Prevacid 101, last post onthe page:)https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1
any other options?
you can try and TELL the pharmacist EXACTLY how to compound (make into a liquid) your prevacid or prilosec. However, for whatever reasons, it can be difficult to get a high enough dose prescribed and, for whatever reasons, pharmacist insist they’re doing it correctly their way and they don’t take kindly to compounding the way you or your doctor tells them to.
March 30, 2012 at 8:32 am #70139AnonymousInactiveThanks Laura… I did read the post that you had sent earlier but I am so confused I am not sure what to do. Zahra did amazing when we started on the compounded Prevacid ( the pharmacist gave a generic medicine ). Then she caught a cold and things started going own hill. The doc has prescribed her a incresed dose and carafate . She is on day 3rd and she has started picking up a bit ( Thank God ). will start the carafate from today….still giving her the compounded Prevacid….didnt read of anyone giving their babies compounded medicine so was not sure if I am doing the right thing :)))
March 30, 2012 at 9:30 pm #70150hellbenntKeymasterwell, people find (myself included) that the compounds don’t work so well. they tend to work for a week and that’s all. since you said it’s expensive and since they are known not to be stable, then I gave you other options. if you feel like you’d like to give the compound some more consideration, then you can TELL your pharmacist HOW to compound it…there’s a link to this in Prevacid 101.
you can ask the doctor to please humour you and to ask her/him to please write the RX exactly this way- or just ask/tell the pharmacist to please humour you:
it needs to be made with 16.8 percent sodium bicarbonate & no flavorings (flavor can be ‘on the side,’ where you give w/ each dose- not mixed into the entire bottle of meds). The concentration should be somewhere between 2-4mg/ml so that each dose has at least 3.5ml to ensure enough buffer. If they won’t do it, then go to another pharmacy. When you do get it made, ask for a printout of all the ingredients used in the compound. We did this, and found out that additional flavouring agents were being added…April 1, 2012 at 1:22 pm #70162AnonymousInactiveHey Laura thanks soo much for your replies its helping me sort my head here :))..
1. I’ll talk to my pharmacist and see how he compounds the medicine. If he does not agree then I think I’ll just ask my doc to write a new prescription for sol tabs.
2. Zahra is having her 2 1/2 – 3 ounce of milk after every 2 hrs :)) but with a li’ll bit of fussiness. I can also still hear the acid comming up. not sure here if the increased does is working ( its been 3 days since she started the 9 mg dose ).
3. Carafate- I am spacing it. The docs prescribed her 3.5 ml 4 times a day. I am giving it to her for jst 2 or 3 times a day. she never cries in pain and is a very happy baby ( thats what confuses me the most ). if she has a problem she just stops feeding. i read in one of the posts that mothers gave carafate strictly on a need basis..April 1, 2012 at 8:55 pm #70168hellbenntKeymasterthe acid will still come up w/ the meds. just not the pain.
you said she never seemed to be in pain, so I would use her refusal/willingness to eat as your indicator that you’ve got the meds ‘right’she also might have DGE. this is delayed gastric emptying. there’s a test for this. TELL doctor you’d like the test.April 3, 2012 at 8:39 pm #70184AnonymousInactivetoday was horrible.Zahra took 3 ounces frm bottle in the morning (with great difficulty )then she aaate her oatmeal( two scoops of fomula spoon )
after 2 hrs then after 2 hrs she took just took 1 ounce of milk. after 2 hrs she refused the bottle completely. gave her oatmeal again. now again she is refusing the bottle. Had to feed her with spoon. She has also been crying today after every meal :((. Her stools are becomming more hard paste kind . I have noticed this after she started taking Carafate… totally stressed out today…..I am at my wits end !!!!!!!April 4, 2012 at 7:47 am #70187hellbenntKeymasterthe stools just might very well be from the cereal…
