Matthew is like that for clothes changing, sleeping and feeding… It is so frustrating….although eh loves his bath! Thank god for that.
Matthew´s reflux is really under control and he will be lying on his back smiling and laughing and if i try to put in a sleeve, there he goes arching and screaming.
Some else posted abotu arching and whether it was a sign of reflux — not for Matthew. He just does it whenever he wants something… he will be in his crib laughing and when he has had enough, he arches so hard and shouts like crazy.
February 4, 2006 at 11:04 am #719hellbenntKeymasterI like the sleeper idea.
Also, I’m one to make up a ritual for everything– and I’m also one to talk incessantly about things- so in your case, I’d talk to her about getting dressed well before the event- in a soft voice, telling all the steps, what’s going to happen, etc…then I’d narrate what’s happening as it goes on- I actually still use the phrase “now your arm go throuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh the sleeve, throuuuuuuuuuuugh the sleeve and now the other one” and I repeat it for the other arm – with Jonah and he’s 2 and 1/2. I dunno…at this point it’s fun and silly…when he was teeny and squirmy it was just routine…
This isn’t a quick fix by any means, just something I do…

February 4, 2006 at 1:45 pm #734AnonymousInactiveLaura, I thought that I was the only talker…. nice to meet another one.
I believe that it really does help distract them.
February 4, 2006 at 11:12 pm #757AnonymousInactiveDefinitely – we do it too! Running dialogue – now we’re putting on your shirt – the pretty one that says I love daddy, etc…
February 5, 2006 at 1:53 am #762AnonymousInactiveI am a HUGE talker!
February 6, 2006 at 3:42 pm #935AnonymousInactiveHmmm…I was singing before and everytime I use to lift her arm for sleeves, she used to tighten her body and start crying..I used to rise my volume(still singing..) and her pitch used to increase too..end, before her dress was on, we both will be panting!!!! May be she likes me to talk to her instead
Sleepers are my life savers….but, I had got a lot of pretty clothes (for different age groups too )for her before her birth and I really hate to see them go waste.
I guess like Mathew or Hailey, arching back is one the ways by dd shows her dislike. I put her in her boucy, she arches her back and manages to slide down…hmmm..she is indeed a hard nut..
Thanks ladies for all your tips…
February 6, 2006 at 3:44 pm #936AnonymousInactiveWe donated a lot of our pretty clothes that weren’t practical – so you
can definitely find ways so they won’t got to waste! Yes, Marisa arches
when she is uncomfortable but also when she is just unhappy or wants to
move.February 10, 2006 at 10:15 pm #1322AnonymousInactiveAlso, I dont know if you have considered it being a sensory issue? Samantha does the same thing, I have found that if I get things that are loose on the arms and really soft cotton she does better. Two places that I have found have the really soft cotton are Babystyle and Hanna Andersson. I have a lot of their one piece sleeper/play outfits, the advantage to those is they do not have to go over their head.
