what do you do when your baby hates the taste of the medicine?
we had to switch to prevacid with caracream yesterday, we cant pay for zegerid anymore.
anyway, Trace has been sick since the 23rd, and it seems like he is eating less and less every day. yesterday he had a few ounces at noon and then a few at 4. he refused everything i gave him after that. well, finally, at midnight i thought i had him drinking okay, until i snuck the syringe of caracream in his mouth like i normally do with zegerid while he is eating. He screamed, spit everything out, gagged, and after that refused the rest of the bottle. so now im freaked out that giving him meds he cant stand will only decrease his fluid intake. plus, in the long run, cant things like this lead to feeding aversions in babies who were on the verge of one before they were properly medicated??
agh i hate reflux i dont know what to do!December 28, 2006 at 10:19 am #21183AnonymousInactivePersonally I wouldn’t change his meds while he’s sick. It’s so hard to sort things out when you have multiple variables. Can you keep him on Zegerid at least until his virus is gone?
December 28, 2006 at 10:23 am #21184AnonymousInactivewe have no zegerid, and Mike refuses to pay for it. every time i got it refilled that in itself was a battle. i had to plead and beg him.
this stinks.December 28, 2006 at 11:00 am #21189AnonymousInactiveSome men are such ! I know exactly what you mean. My dh used to get very angry at me everytime we had to refill Myles’ medication too. I used to be a nervous wreck about it when it was time for meds and I still have an anxiety attack whenever one of the kids is sick because he will freak out if I need to take them to the doctor or get meds for them. I was having chest pains one day and he forbid me from going to the ER because it would cost money! And his parents think he’s a saint, the perfect husband and father. It’s all an act, and God knows the truth.
I’m really sorry, Natalia. I know how hard it is to have an insensitive, non-supportive spouse. It really sucks.
December 28, 2006 at 12:04 pm #21192AnonymousInactiveIm sorry your husband is being lame about the medicine…that would suck…I do feel for you though with the medicine…my daughter all of a sudden despises hers…she had a cold for a bit, but is pretty much better (so far we seem to have avoided all the other yuck thats going around thankfully) but she has not taken in a full dose of medicine in 2 days…she spits it back out, or when I try the mixing it into formula (just 1oz when shes hungry) she fights it and wont take it….argh. And she too is taking less in a day each day….and sleeping less and less (she was a never a good sleeper to begin with)
So basically Im looking for any advice other people give you…
and good luck!
December 28, 2006 at 1:35 pm #21200AnonymousInactiveShannon,
I had a trick that worked wonders for Myles when he hated to take his meds. I’d mix his dose in a little medicine cup with a little bit of baby oatmeal cereal. This would thicken it up which was helpful because then if he spit it out I’d be able to scoop it back up with the spoon and keep pushing it back in. Also, I think the little bit of cereal may have toned down the taste of the medicine some.
I see that Audrey is MSPI so if you want to try this be sure to get the Beechnut brand of oatmeal cereal. Gerber contains some soy. Rice cereal would probably work as well but I always avoided rice becaue it tends cause gas and constipation in many babies.
I know she’s probably not on any solids yet, but it may be worth a try if it will help you to get her to take her meds.
Natalia,
I’ve never used caracream so I don’t know if the oatmeal trick would work with it or not, but maybe it would.
Good luck to both of you.
December 28, 2006 at 3:32 pm #21208AnonymousInactiveThanks for the tip…we tried rice cereal about a week ago and it was no good, and her ped GI wants us to wait on solids for a long while more (like closer to 9 months)…we are also to avoid oatmeal, as it has gluten and since my son has celiac there is a high chance Audrey may as well so we are off all gluten, dairy, soy for a year.
Thanks though…I wish I could try it…Im running out of ideas…
December 28, 2006 at 4:57 pm #21224AnonymousInactiveAidan’s colds/sickness/whatever always last more than 2 weeks. I know how Awful it is on them (and you)!!! We can’t afford prevacid anymore, although I do have one refill on the solutabs and am using the old packets we have from a long time ago (still good). I know about all the anxiety about going to refill meds, it’s horrible that insurance companies won’t cover a lot of them!!! I’m sorry trace is having such a hard time, and I hope he gets better soon!!! I would keep trying the meds, maybe just a tiny bit at a time. He might get used to the taste eventually??
December 28, 2006 at 8:58 pm #21238AnonymousInactiveOh gosh, I am so sorry to hear about the Meds….Do you think there is any way that Mike would pay for it when he sees how hard it is for Trace to take the other stuff? Also, do you have to use that form of prevacid? Can you use the solutabs? (Brianna loves them, and she also had MSPI…I know you may have tried them before, but since he is older…it might be worth a shot. I will pray for Mike to have a soft heart in regards to the meds…keep us updated.
December 28, 2006 at 10:26 pm #21241AnonymousInactivethank you.
Mike is just so insensitive! and i havent tried the solutabs. i am scared because of the apartame and lactose and i know several babies have had cramping because of that.
i also cant imagine timing around meals with an infant! i dont know though, if this continues then who knows, i may have to give the solutabs a tryDecember 29, 2006 at 12:23 pm #21265AnonymousInactiveBrianna is OK with the solutab (and this from a baby who is bothered by Mylanta!!! ) so maybe it would be worth a try. Her GI doc actaully said prevacid solutabs are one of the best interms of taste and few side effects…but I know every baby is different. Please keep us posted…and please tell your husband to stop being a . ()
December 29, 2006 at 1:42 pm #21271AnonymousInactiveYes, I agree that the solutabs would be a good option. Myles did have some cramping from them but only for about 30 minutes after each dose and only for about 10 days to 2 weeks. After that he was fine with them and he really did well.
The solutabs taste good and are so easy to administer because you only need to dissolve them in a few ml’s of water, so there’s not much too get down.
December 29, 2006 at 3:15 pm #21277AnonymousInactiveI don’t know about the caracream either, but could you maybe dissolve a little bit of the Tums and add that to the medicine? I know you don’t need it for the buffer, but maybe the old Tums taste would entice him to take it again???
December 29, 2006 at 6:08 pm #21296AnonymousInactiveI LOVE the solutabs, after dealing with these stupid packets for the last few weeks, I’ll be glad when we can get out tab rx. Aidan never really had any cramping on them (well ok it was so long ago that he started on them that I honestly can’t remember ) And they are very easy to break into 2 doses and get the doses almost equal. I just recently started trying to time the doses-which I will say isn’t the most fun thing in the world, but it’s not that hard once you get used to it (I never timed them before and I will eat my words they DO indeed work better if they are timed). Please update us on how he is doing!!!! He’s too cute to be in so much pain!!
