Please don’t laugh but I am SO clueless when it comes to figuring out
how to calculate the proper dosing of meds. I have been trying to do
it on my own b/c i was SO embarrassed that I could not figure it out…
SO, can someone please help me figure out the min-max dose of axid i could give my 11lb 8oz son….
Children <12 years: 10mg/kg/day divided into two daily doses.
However, Lexi-Drugs states that Axid may not be as effective in children under the age of 12 years as it is for adults and children 12 years and older.
5.2 x 10 = 52mgs a day of axid, divided into 2 doses
yep- 3.5mls a day– you can also try dividing ‘unevenly’ – however works for your baby- so let’s say night time is worse, so you could try 1.5mls in the a.m. & then 2mls in the p.m- just ‘play’ with it
laura you are so much better at that math than I am.. I think that Axid and Zantac dosing is pretty much the same!! Which of course we will all have to commit to memory for future use.
gotcha! it appears as though they are the same– that the max of zantac is the same as the (1) axid dose- makes me think that folks should just ask for axid, as there’s not much room to have to ‘argue?’ But I don’t know if the Physician’s or Ped’s Desk Reference has a lower dosing for axid, like it does for zantac? That’s what started me on this whole thing, lol– the post/link I give w/ the dosing is bcse I was at the ped’s office and spouted off my knowledge of zantac dosing at 10mgs a kilo (smart a$$, LOLOL!!) and the ped showed me this thick paperback book where it had the lower dosing (2-5mgs per kilo or something)- so I posted this question to Sheri (our resident pharmacist) and found out there ARE two dosings- one for ‘pediatric’ and one for GERD/from a ped GI, etc…
yes, i think there are 2 dosings b/c my ped GI’s nurse practitioner told me just last week that Evan’s at his max dose of Axid (when i asked for it to be increased)… he’s 17lbs & only on 3mL/day – that’s no where NEAR 10mg/kg. I give him around 5mL/day 😉
I will say though that she listened to me about prevacid dosing & was totally on board w/ that dosing (eventhough my general ped’s been on board w/ that dosing from the beginning) – so I guess you just pick your battles.
