DD is 8 weeks old and EBF with silent reflux. He is on 1.6 ML Zantac every 12 hours.
He goes to sleep around 7 or 8 pm, wakes up at 11:30 to nurse and get his Zantac, then goes right back to sleep until 2ish. During this time he is sleeping in an elevated bassinet, swaddled, with an AngelCare monitor on, usually on his back. When he wakes up at 2, he usually poops, gets changed, nurses, and falls back asleep. I hold him upright for as long as I can stay awake (a half hour) but as soon as I attempt to put him down (in the bassinet, the elevated swing, etc.) he is awake again. Occasionally he will go back to sleep and wake up 45 minutes to an hour later (around 3) with the reflux. On a good night, he is awake for an hour and on a bad night be is awake for 3.
When he does fall back asleep (between 4 am and 5 am, usually) he sleeps fitfully and most times on me, until he is up for the day between 6 and 7 am.
Naps during the day are short in the morning (45 minutes to an hour) in his car seat if we are going somewhere or in his swing or bouncey seat. In the afternoon he naps for a few hours in his bassinet. He gets his medication again around lunch and is sometimes miserable again between 4 and 7 pm, but I can distract him with a bath, baby wearing, etc. because I’m awake!
Any suggestions for the stretch at night? I am so sick of late night tv! 😉
January 28, 2013 at 4:08 pm #71549hellbenntKeymasterI’d give more zantac? how much does he weigh?
In the meantime, give him mylanta cherry supreme.WELL, they don’t make it any more…SO: you have to find a store brand/generic equivalentlook for a liquid antacid (usually cherry flavored) that does not have anyaluminum listed in the ingredients-try rite aid, cvs, wa l mart, target, family dollar, etc.it DOES exist, do a search (upper right-hand corner of this screen- search for mylanta)this is SAFE even for newborns! you can give up to 1/2 tsp- if you see loose stools ‘just’ back off…January 30, 2013 at 8:57 am #71562AnonymousInactiveStill on the search for mylanta. Not sure on his weight, currently (will find out next Wednesday). Seems to be doing better sleeping in the swing.
January 30, 2013 at 9:28 pm #71572hellbenntKeymasterTry rite-aid, cvs brand, w almart, target, Bartell Drug (West coast), Dollar General, brand names: Geri-Care & Geri-Lanta Supreme, meijer, etc…

February 2, 2013 at 9:18 am #71585hellbenntKeymasterso how much does she weigh? I can help with zantac dose.
As for the PPIs, research all you can:
for example:Prevacid 101:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1
OTC PPI w/ applesauce, pedialyte, etc:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14642&PID=113339#113339
zegerid mixing- has instructions for mixing the prescription packets and for using zegerid that you buy over the counter:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14637
zegerid has the drug prilosec in it and it has buffers, so that it can be given w/ food. Otherwise, you must give a PPI on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later. Examples of situations where you have to follow the ’30 minute rule:’ if you use prevacid solutabs or, if you use either prevacid or prilosec capsules (you would open them up and give the beads inside the capsule- you would give on an empty stomach and administer the beads w/ 1/2 tsp of applesauce & then you would follow w/ a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later).
why should you care about zegerid? because you can give the medicine at any time, even with food, and you don’t have to worry about timing it around an empty stomach.
are there other options?
yes, you can buy over the counter capsules and administer the beads inside the capsule.
any other options?
you can try and TELL the pharmacist EXACTLY how to compound (make into a liquid) your prevacid or prilosec. However, for whatever reasons, it can be difficult to get a high enough dose prescribed and, for whatever reasons, pharmacist insist they’re doing it correctly their way and they don’t take kindly to compounding the way you or your doctor tells them to.
