I should have kept my mouth shut. After 6 great days in a row, I felt that we had found our solution in the soy formula….BUT today he was awful, awful. I don’t know where to go from here. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should try next??? He’s been on Enfamil Gentle Ease, Alimentum, and now RTF Prosobee….all have been miserable. I am so upset about this.

November 9, 2006 at 8:07 pm #17556AnonymousInactiveI put Aidan on lacto free formula b/c it’s easier to digest but not constipating, but if he’s having trouble with the milk in general, that won’t help. I wish I could offer more advice!!!
November 9, 2006 at 8:13 pm #17558AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear the bad news. You’re not alone. Many of us have been or are afraid to post in the hip hip hooray section because of the common experience of posting good news and then having things fall apart soon after. It’s a real bummer, to say the least.
I think the next step would be Nutrmigen or Neocate.
How long has he been on 30 mg of Prevacid? What form? Is he getting three doses a day? Myles did best on three doses.
I’m sorry things have gotten bad again, and I hope you find the answer soon.
November 9, 2006 at 8:29 pm #17563AnonymousInactivei would also suggest neocate if he couldnt tolerate the alimentum.
November 9, 2006 at 8:44 pm #17566AnonymousInactiveHi everyone.
When other formulas do not work, does the Neocate seem to do the trick for most babies??? It seems like a last resort and I am afraid about what would happen if that failed too….this is making me that nuts.
To answer your question, Christine – “How long has he been on 30 mg of Prevacid? What form? Is he getting three doses a day? Myles did best on three doses.” He had been on the 30 mg of Prevacid solutabs for about 3 or 4 weeks now. I am giving it once at 7 am and again around 4 (so twice daily). Perhaps it would help to divide it in three doses…but if he was doing okay on the soy for about a week and then it went down hill, I would guess (and correct me if I am wrong because OH! have I been wrong before ) that that wouldn’t remedy this formula problem. However, I am going to try that next. What three times should I give it?

November 9, 2006 at 9:02 pm #17570AnonymousInactiveYou’re probably right, that it was the soy…since he was doing fine for about a week on the two doses. Personally I would try another formula first because it seems like the two doses is working for him. I always hated to try more than one new thing at a time because then you never know what’s working and what’s not. Some babies do fine on two doses.
Was he doing ok that week even at night? If he was, then the two doses may be just fine for him.
To answer your question about when to give three doses (in case you decide to try it at some point), I gave Myles his doses at 6:30 or 7am, 2 – 2:30 pm, and 7:30 pm.
I hate to be redundant but just a reminder in case you weren’t told…the solutabs have to be given on an empty stomach and followed up 30 minutes later with a full feeding.
Good luck.
November 9, 2006 at 9:06 pm #17571AnonymousInactiveChristine, thanks for the info….and redundancy is necessary when running on 3 seconds of sleep per night. His nights have been really bad all along. I am going to try three doses for the next several days and a formula switch if he keeps doing badly.
November 9, 2006 at 9:11 pm #17574AnonymousInactiveOh, if his nights have been bad all along, then I definitely would try the three doses. And if that doesn’t work, I’d try Neocate. Heck, I might have even tried both at the same time if things were bad enough!
I remember those horrible sleepless nights. I hope you find the right combination of formula and meds to get him feeling better soon.
November 9, 2006 at 9:41 pm #17585AnonymousInactivemaybe im just crazy (well i am) but my whole philosophy behind the neocate thing is why not just sell the damm stuff and let a parent use it if they want, why does everything have to be so complicated especially when it comes to our babies our future
November 10, 2006 at 2:34 am #17594AnonymousInactiveI’m a bit of a cynic- the reason they don’t sell neocate or prescribe it that often is that it is dam expensive to make and therefore expensive to subsidise!
This is true in Aus anyway, where we have a pharmaceutical benefits scheme for all (rich and poor) which means the government subsidise meds- Drs are discouraged from overprescribing expensive ones by putting lots and lots of conditions on them!
In terms of what to try next, you have gotton lots of good advice, but I would try only one change at a time- I have done two things at once before and not known what worked so just had to experiment again- still took the same amount of time as trying both
November 10, 2006 at 10:09 pm #17680AnonymousInactiveThanks. We really need some relief around here. It’s been rough. I am just trying to decide if I should try nutramigen first….I am so confused! I can’t believe how complicated this is!
About how much does neocate cost (w/o a prescription)?
November 10, 2006 at 10:22 pm #17683AnonymousInactive$30 a can (tiny can!)
i get some through WIC and then 5 cans through insurance.
nutri and alimnetum are basically the same thing-different brands.November 10, 2006 at 10:25 pm #17686AnonymousInactivehmmmm – does insurance only cover 5 cans a month, in general?????
November 10, 2006 at 10:37 pm #17690AnonymousInactiveno, that is what i requested.
