My baby boy is 4 months old and just recently got diagnosed with GERD. I didn’t realize the symptoms until it got so bad. He was fussy at times but he also smiles a lot so I just didn’t think. He has really bad esophagitis. He had blood in his spit up last Friday. Right now, he’s on prevacid and he seems to be better already. He hasn’t spit up very much at all since he started the medicine (started on the 21st) . but I’m so worried about his esophagus. I will hate myself forever for not realizing his pain sooner.
November 25, 2008 at 3:53 pm #58974AnonymousInactiveI heard of carafete? but I never used on my dd.
It will heal though about 2 weeks, I think the prevacid helps that condition too.
We all feel the same way here, wanting all the comfort in the world for our babies.
Best of luck!November 25, 2008 at 5:19 pm #58975hellbenntKeymasteryes ask your doctor about carafate & please try not to beat yourself up! the best thing you can do for your baby is to be the best advocate you can, and you’ve found the right place for this!
you will need to ask the pharmacist (or one of us!) how far apart to give the prevacid and the carafateas far as the prevacid goes, please check to see that your baby is on a PROPER dose- you check here: http://www.marci-kids.comyou also need to make sure you’re giving it correctly. Please please read here: Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1the next thing to consider is diet, as in did they do an endoscopy & take biopsies to see if the esophagitis is from allergies? it also could be from intolerances…please read this:Mspi/allergy info(‘main page’): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=1&TPN=1

November 25, 2008 at 8:22 pm #58982AnonymousInactivethanks so much for the info. I’ll ask our ped about carafete and also about the prevacid. Right now, he’s on the compounded stuff, which I know isn’t ideal.
I am breastfeeding and have been eliminating all dairy and soy for a couple of months now.
Do you think I should ask my ped about an endoscopy? I’m a little hesitant of such an invasive procedure, but I wonder if it might be neccessary?
November 25, 2008 at 10:30 pm #58985hellbenntKeymasterI can’t tell you to do an endoscopy- but from what I’ve read from others (I’ve been on the board 5 years now), I don’t think I recall anyone ever regretting it- it will show you what’s going on in there & you’ll know for sure if it’s an allergy- if there’s EOS cells present-won’t show an intolerance though?
these are things to ask a PED GI so I would get to one ASAP if you’re not seeing one already…
November 26, 2008 at 8:31 am #58995AnonymousInactiveI would agree with Laura, noone I know has ever regretted doing an EDG scope to have a look. It would probably to a great amount of good in your child’s case because they alrady suspect esophageitis (I know I spelt that wrong).
Carafate wil most def. hlep to heal things up too. We did it and it worked great. You have to make sure you give it at the proper time though. You have to space it somethign like 1 hour after meds but 30 mins prior to a meal. For us we just made sure to give it 30 mins prior to him eating anythign or havin ganything go in his tube for food.November 26, 2008 at 5:59 pm #59017AnonymousInactivethanks for the help. we can’t see our ped until Tues b/c of the holidays but I am compiling a list of everything I want to talk to him about. I have a sinking suspicion that it will take forever to get in to see a ped GI. My baby was born with hip dysplasia and it took a lot of force to get him in to see a ped ortho in a timely manner. I wonder why this is…
November 26, 2008 at 11:14 pm #59023AnonymousInactivei have given sylvia carafate in the middle of a feed before and it still helped her settle down—someone else on here said they had the same luck giving it in the middle of of feed before, too, even though it isn’t the normal time. you know how it goes when you are desperate……….
