Hi: I haven’t been on here for several years as Abby’s reflux issues went away after about age one but now we are dealing with a new issue and I thought I would return to my group of “experts” who saved me during the reflux days.
Abby is now 6 and has been diagnosed with ADHD. I had her into the doctor last Friday as she has also never been dry at night and along with the behaviors she is exhibiting in school (interrupting, talking non stop, not willing to take turns, fidgiting) on a daily basis for much of the day. My doc started her on Strattera but we nearly fell over when we heard it is $180 per month (we have a fairly high deductable). I have been doing my research and have found another option (Desipramine) as a possible alternative which is supposed to help with both problems. The Strattera has helped the bedwetting but not the behavior so much yet.So what I am wondering is?Does anyone know if a good support group/forum for ADHD parents that could come anywhere near as close to awesome as this group is for reflux? And, does anyone have experience with Desipramine or have any other med ideas?I also have contacted Dr Phillips for his advice as he was so helpful with reflux type meds. The one that he suggested, Adderall XR, is in very short supply and our pharmacy is unable to get it.Anyway, sorry to bend your ears – so good to see so many of you still on here helping out!! hellbennt, kevieb. Wow this brings back memories!!RobinMarch 16, 2012 at 10:14 pm #70070AnonymousInactiveWe had a teenage son with ADHD…DH has ADD. DH tried Strattera but it didn’t work, he only has ADD. Strattera is a non stimulant medication. It increased the norepinephrine in the brain since low levels of that have been linked to ADHD..so it basically tries to balance out the chemicals in the brain.
Desipramine does the same thing but it is actually an antidepressant used to treat ADHD because it increases the norepinephrine too.
Both DS and DH use Adderall XR…we have had great success with it. We are able to get it no problem. But it is a stimulant and you will have to pick up a triplicate prescription from your doctor every month. So you will have to decide whether or not you want your daughter on a stimulant or not. The have side effects. We actually have DS off of it right now, we wanted to give him a break, plus he is hitting puberty and he got really grumpy and mouthy on it. It was hard to tell if it was the med or just him.
Stimulants can also decrease appetite.BTW..Dr Phillips is not a medical doctor, he is a Dr of pharmacology. So yes, he knows about medications but I just wanted to make sure you knew that you are not getting advice from a medical doctor, it’s coming from a pharmacist. I didn’t know this back when our Lo was on zegerid.
I don’t know about a support forum. Our DS is older and we don’t have any issues with anything other than him being a little hyper and forgetting things.
You can also look at her diet…People do some improvements when kids are off of certain foods…dairy being a big one. I am sure if you google away you can get an education on it! lol
