Anyone using Nexium?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone else’s child is on Nexium. I see a lot about Prevacid and Zantc, but not much about Nexium. My son, Blake, takes 20 mg twice per day. Has anyone had success with this medication?

On a separate note…

I’m having such a hard time getting all the medication in his mouth. When I use the syringe, the medication squirts out with such force that it squirts all over my son’s face. When I use the dropper, I can’t fit all the medication inside so I have to mix it first in a small bowl. I can never get all of the medication/beads out of the bowl (even when mixing it with breast milk).

hi jen!

first of all are you using capsules?

then you should break them open, & give the beads w/ a tiny bit of applesauce

give on an empty stomach and feed 30 minutes later

yes he’s young for apple sauce but you can do it, LOL! squirt some water in there to help wash it down or use a ml of apple juice- you need something acidic- check out the stickies in the Medicine forum for the scientific reason why, lol!

I just sent out an e-mail to get more info. about ordering it. How exactly does it work? Is it like a syrup that makes the medicine thicker? Do you just put it on a spoon? I’ve never heard of anything like that before.

Blake is not using capsules. We have the oral suspension packets (little beads).

caracream/bufferbabies works like a liquid, like any liquid med (but a bit thicker) like tylenol or bendryl, etc- you use a syringe

with the packets, I believe that they are powder and beads, right? the beads are the actual medicine, so if you want to make it easier to administer, you might want to strain out the beads and then just use a bit of the powder w/ a bit of liquid to administer the beads

the med should be given on an empty stomach followed by a meal 30 minutes later

My daughter Ashlynn has been on Nexium since she was about 4 -5 motnhs old and she is now 19 months . At first the Nexium was a little hard to give,but I finaly got a method down. Now that she is older I use the tablet and give it with applesause. I did use the packets until she started solids. I got a bulp syringe from walmart that worked wonders for us. After mixing the powder with about 5ml of water I would stir the med and let it set for a couple of min. so that it would thicken a little and the suck it up and give it to Ashlynn. I did find that if I let the med set for about 3-4 mintues it would thicken and The beads would come out a lot eaiser.

Thanks so much for the info. I’ve been struggling with how to administer the medication, too. I tried to mix the packet in a bowl and then suck it up with a syringe, but I felt like a lot of the medication was left around the sides of the bowl. Maybe I should try to wait until it thickens. My son, Blake, is still throwing up once or twice a day. I was just hoping that the medication, along with my elimination diet, would help him to stop throwing up. He definitely does not seem like he is in as much pain anymore. He’s a lot happier, so I guess that’s what is important. Thanks again!

Try a small medicine cup(shot glass style) that comes w/ children’s motrin.

Works the best so that you can see all of those beads.

I e-mailed David Stock, and here is the info. that he gave me about BufferBabies. He is also going to send me a free sample.

What is BufferBabies

BufferBabies is what is known as a Pharmaceutical aid. It allows a medicine to be changed from a solid to a liquid.

It is not a medicine, however, it does contain buffers that permit the delayed release form of a PPI drug such as omeprazole or lansoprazole to be converted into an immediate release form of the same drug.

Most PPI drugs, except Zegerid, are made as delayed release granules or delayed release tablets. When a suitable buffer, such as BufferBabies, is added to these forms of the PPI drug the granules or tablet will disintegrate thereby producing the drug itself without the enteric-coating. Then the buffers in the BufferBabies protect the PPI drug from acid in the stomach and permit its rapid absorption.

Each bottle of BufferBabies will allow many doses and as such, it would be more like a liquid formulation of other drugs for children (such as Amoxil suspension, amoxicillin suspension).

We aren’t using nexium, but we are using losec (very similar) It comes as a tablet, I put it on a spoon with some warm water and leave it for a couple of minutes, it breaks down (then I add some breastmilk for taste) and am able to get my 3 month old to sip it off the end of the spoon. I found it all got clogged in the end of the syringe and he just wasnt getting the full dose.

something about the enteric coating? I truly do not know but PLEASE find out

Hello! Your son is the same age as mine. How is he doing on the losec? That’s a form of Prilosec, right? My doctor told me to use breastmilk too, but I found out that you should not use milk, formula or breastmilk. Maybe your medicine is different…

You should definitely check out marci-kids.com, as Laura suggested.

I have also found that the medicine gets stuck in the tip of the syringe. I’ve been experimenting with different ones, and the wide tips seem to work easier.
