I am currently in the same shoes as you, BUT my son isn’t on Neocate(yet). We do know he has severe Reflux and a severe milk allergy, but we’re on Soy formula to make sure he isn’t MSPI. So far the Soy has helped and he has more happy times than fussy times. But now he has a rash that im trying to figure out where it came from.
My Conner is still spitting up A LOT, and he is on 1.5ML 2 times a day, and I upped his Prevacid to 7.5ML 3 times a day, plus the Mylanta supreme as needed, Karo Syrup for constipation, and baby oatmeal for thickening.I have been where you are with the screaming, and something that has saved me was Dr. Harvey Karp and his book and DVD called The happiest baby on the block. His methods do work, and you can find a lot of his methods on Youtube. In some *Neocate* posts I read that if the baby doesn’t need it, it won’t work. Is your Connor MSPI? If your not sure, Id suggest trying a Soy formula. It wont help with the spitting up, but it will help with any other gas issues, colic issues, as a lot of gerdlings show signs of.IF and WHEN you see your GI, I would seriously request an upper GI, it’s simple and painless(from what I heard), ask about seing if his esophogus(sp) is thickened, which can lead to reflux, or a Hiatel Hernia which can cause reflux aswell. Make sure you write down all your questions, requests, and make sure you let your GI know that if he doesn’t do what you feel is needed to help your baby….you will go elsewhere for help.I would also ask for Prevacid capsules and use bufferbabies, I was given solutabs and quite frankly they suck.Im wishing you the best, and maybe if you look up Dr. Harvey Karp he can help you have a somewhat restful weekend. As for his swaddling techniques, it is sooooo much easier to get a swaddle blanket made by Kiddopatamus(sp). It is Velcro, easy, and even daddies can do it without any issues.December 5, 2008 at 12:12 pm #59235AnonymousInactiveTypo- 1.5ML of Zantac (sorry)
Also if your Connor has a milk allergy, he will more than likely have allergic symptoms to Nutramigen. Nutramigen is Lactose free but contains casien, which is another Milk protein. Im sure you probably know all of this, but I just wanted to share what I have learned from these wonderful ladies here at infantreflux.org and with my own research, and trial and errors with my baby. Also it is said that with Neocate….The baby should be weaned onto it, and not suddenly switched as it can cause more GI issues while babies system is trying to get used to it.December 5, 2008 at 12:14 pm #59236AnonymousInactiveHi Laura, sorry to hear you are having such a rough time with Conner. Seth was like that- screamed all the time. It breaks your heart because you feel helpless. I hope the GI will be able to help. It definitely sounds like he needs a PPI. It was not until Seth got on the Prevacid that we really started to see an improvement no matter what formula we tried. That’s awesome they were able to get you in Monday! Please keep us posted. In terms of the soy, I actually found out that our insurance denied covering the nutramigen because we hadn’t tried soy yet, so his pediatrician asked us to try soy for the weekend and if it’s no good we can resubmit the paperwork. At this point I’m willing to try anything really, and I was on soy as a baby so I figured why not. He wasn’t perfect on nutramigen anyway, and since I know we’re heading in there on Monday, we can do this.
So far, so good. He’s having a really good morning, but did have one blowout poop. As in pretty watery – but he’s been on so many formulas in the past 48 hours I can’t say I’m surprised! I was really frustrated to hear about the insurance, but at the same time, who knows what the Ped GI will tell us on Monday anyway. Really, I think he needs a PPI and feel like once he has that things will start to fall into place. I could just tell he was having pain from his food coming up and down – and heard him refluxing so often it just sounded miserable.
And Tiffany – I had no idea what the screaming all the time was like until Connor! I thought Owen was tough – but he would just cry when we tried to feed him and otherwise was a pretty happy baby. The screaming just kills me – I’ve cried so many times along with him, just looking in his eyes and telling him we’re going to make him feel better. In some ways I feel like it’s easier because I know he’ll grow out of it, but it still breaks my heart!
Thanks again everyone, and wish me luck on Monday –
LauraDecember 5, 2008 at 12:53 pm #59239AnonymousInactiveSoy is a good option to try, all babies do react differently to it, so always keep an open mind when switching formula. My Middle child Aiden who is now 2 was lactose intolerant at birth, he has since grown out of the allergy, but when I switched him to Enfamil Prosobee it saved my life! He was a totally different baby from day 1 on it.
Now Conner has gotten the 1 bad side affect of Soy…..Constipation. It’s easy to fix with a little Dark Karo Syrup, and it beats all the other symptoms.I would seriously think about trying Enfamil Prosobee, and if he shows any allergic reaction to it, Id talk to his PED GI about MSPI….and some GI’s are very skeptic of MSPI in babies, I know mine was and is, but I demanded that he be tested for it if he has a bad reaction to soy.December 5, 2008 at 1:01 pm #59240AnonymousInactiveThanks! I have him on Similac Isomil because we had a sample can that they had sent to us – do you think there’s a big difference between that and the Enfamil brand? He does seem pretty content with it so far, but it’s just been a few feedings at this point. It will be good to give it the weekend before we go in to the GI appt.
Owen had tried soy before his Ped GI changed him to Alimentum, and he was the same with the constipation so we have some Karo syrup here still! So far my Connor seems to have the opposite reaction, but I’m thinking that’s more from the 3 formulas he’s had in the past few days than anything.
