November 1, 2007 at 11:29 am #44858AnonymousInactiveMy son was born at 35 1/2 weeks and has just been diagnosed w/ reflux at 6 weeks of age. His is not severe and the pediatrician has put him on Axid 3 days ago but he is still gurgling, grunting and choking sometimes (mostly while laying down so I have reclined his co-sleeper mattress). I feel so terrible for the little guy, please tell me there are success stories. He still eats like a fiend so I guess that’s a good sign and not too much of it comes out but to hear him choke in the middle of the night is both frightening and stressful for a first time mom. Help!
September 30, 2008 at 11:42 pm #57275AnonymousInactiveMy son was born at 35 1/2 weeks. He had surgery for pyloric stenosis at 4 weeks, and he was diagnosed with reflux at 6 weeks and was started on Zantac. He’s now 4 months old, and we’re going to start Zegerid because the Zantac is not as effective anymore. My goal is to hopefully have him off meds by the time he’s a year old.

My son was born last year and diagnosed w/ reflux at 7weeks of age, I can only tell you it gets better and once they start sitting (either assisted or unassited) their stomach muscles strengthen and before you know it the reflux starts to subside. You will get through this and your son will be just as healthy and happy as mine is!December 12, 2008 at 1:26 am #59487AnonymousInactivethankyou glomom..
April 24, 2009 at 9:37 am #62254AnonymousInactiveMy son was born at almost 34 weeks and wasn’t diagnosed with reflux until AFTER leaving the NICU! My advice is that we know this will subside with time (some a lot longer than others!) And invest in a lot of bibs!! Bumkins makes a super-absorbent bib — it’s like a towel. Also there are waterproof bibs where the interior is waterproof….. they are supposed to protect their clothes from getting wet. I found them at Target. Now b/c my son is so itty-bitty (9.5 lbs at 4 months old), the waterproof bibs are a little big on him so a lot of the spitup just rolls down his chin and onto his shirt. Still, eventually he’ll grow into them right?
Don’t worry…you’ve got a lot of support here!NicoleJanuary 12, 2010 at 10:54 pm #65453AnonymousInactiveMy grandson was 2 months early and about 4 lbs…is wasnt diagnose with gerd until about 3 months. Without this site, I didnt realize things he does are related to the reflux.
May 7, 2010 at 1:24 pm #66297AnonymousInactiveMy son was born at 33 weeks, 3 lbs 1 oz. He is also IUGR (restricted growth) due to preeclampsia. He started showing signs of reflux after leaving the NICU 2 weeks ago. The poor little guy is so uncomfortable. I have been pumping my breast milk for him since he was born and bottle feeding him. The NICU discharged him on breast milk fortified with 24 calories of formula. I have done some experimenting and noticed that the reflux is much better and spit-up much less in volume if I exclude the formula. I am so torn because the doctor claims he needs these extra calories, but other sources I encounter claim all he needs is the breast milk. Does anyone have any advice on this issue? I want to make him as comfortable as possible, which means no formula, but I don’t want his growth to suffer, of course. Any insight would be wonderful. Thanks.
