Hi all.
I’ve been reading posts on this forum that have been helpful so far though have a question.
My son is 6 weeks old and is suffering from silent reflux. We have recently switched his formula to novalac reflux hoping this will help, though my question is we’ve been told to give him smaller more frequent feds how do you do this when your baby is still crying for more cause his still hungry? Any advice would be great.
May 14, 2012 at 8:00 am #70349hellbenntKeymasterformula alone might not be the only solution 🙁

I assume that smaller feeds are being recommended so that he doesn’t spit up so much. But if he is happier with more food and spitting up more… I’d rather put up with more spit up and a happy baby than less spit up and a hungry baby. When my boys were babies, I did ANYTHING to make them stop crying! I was more worried about their pain than I was their barf. 🙂

Thank you so much for your reply. There is alot of information that I’m sure i will find helpful. As a first time mum it can all be alittle overwhelming especially when everyone tells you something different.I know formula may not be enough, though I’d rather introduce one thing at a time so I know what works and what doesnt. We are one week on the formula and have noticed he doesnt arch his back and cry out as much after a feed, and although we can hear him regurgated (doesnt really spit up as he has silent reflux, will vomit if he his pushing to poop straight after a feed lol)I am also a big believer in the natural side of things and don’t really want him on meds if we can avoid it though if his discomfort and pain worses that is our priority no matter what.besides the formula we give him gripe water after every second feed this seems to help him feel more comfortable as he also has wind.We keep him upright for 20-30min after every feed either in our laps, holding him while walking around or in his swing which is what he is sleeping in as he wont lie on his back we are looking into purchasing a wedge pillow for his cradle.the smaller frequent feeds kept coming up in everything we’d read though as i said seems impossible with a hungry baby plus its time consuming as it is feeding him slowly, burping him regularly then keeping up right for 30min, seems we’d only have another 30min before feeding him again if we were to feed more regularly.I am considering seeing a naturopath as one helped me fall pregnant, and maybe a chiropractor as i’ve heard they can be very helpful.I hope he grows out of it soon. Sorry for the lengthy reply. Any additional advise would be great though once again thank you so much for the information and glad to hear your little jonah is curedVivianMay 15, 2012 at 12:02 am #70357AnonymousInactiveHi Martha,
Thank you so much for your reply. He has silent relflux so doesnt vomit that much it comes up and he swallows it back down. He squirms, arches his back and crys after a feed or when we stop to burp him, though we have noticed this has improved. I assumed the smaller more frequent meals was more for those who vomit regularly but was told it could also help with silent reflux, but he is such a hungry baby its almost impossible to stop a feed short not to mention heartbreaking knowing he is still hungry.I think we will continue to feed him as we have been seeing as he seems happier.VivianMay 15, 2012 at 12:41 am #70358AnonymousInactiveHi again,
Do whatever makes him feel best! 🙂 I agree!
Just today while at my chiropractor I asked her about adjustments helping babies with reflux. She said that if a baby’s mid back is out of place, it can definitely cause reflux. She says she has helped many babies. So I’d say that would be a good thing to try.
Your story sounds quite familiar to mine so I can certainly feel for you! Last summer I finally took the time to write down my entire story of what we went through with our children and what we found to help. I wanted to give it to other mothers with crying babies, so I had a very condensed version printed in a small church magazine and have gotten about 80 calls because of it. Now I’ve decided to try to find other places to share it. Here is a link to my blog where you can read my story.
I wish you the best in finding relief for your little one! Happy Mom2012-05-23 09:19:11

Thank you so much for your reply and for sharing the link. Its funny you mentioned a chiropractor as I have been trying to search for one who has experience with infants. I really think my sons back may not be alight as I had a very difficult labour only to find out he was posterior and his shoulder was coming through with his head this resulted in a c section where they had to push him back up the birth canal to get him through my abdomen. He was born with such a deep crease in the left side of his chest due to how long and how bad his shoulder was lodged. Drs said he was fine but it couldn’t have been good for him so I’m definately gonna lock into it.
Thank you again
Vivian
May 23, 2012 at 9:23 am #70382AnonymousInactiveI emailed my chiropractor the other day and asked if she knew of a good link to send people to explaining why chiropractic care can help babies with reflux. Here is what she sent me. http://icpa4kids.org/Chiropractic-Research/chiropractic-care-of-a-pediatric-patient-with-symptoms-associated-with-gastroesophageal-reflux-disease.htm
I haven’t had time yet to read it but hope to soon.
Also… I edited my post above because now I have created a blog with my personal story in it that you can go to. 🙂
May 23, 2012 at 6:00 pm #70384hellbenntKeymasterFWIW (for what it’s worth),
I took Jonah to the chiropractor. I cannot claim it was miraculous, however he did not complain & seemed to like itforgot to add: what I really wanted to do was bring him to a craniosacrial therapy place, but there wasn’t any close by (at the time) & I couldn’t drive the distance w/ a shrieking/howling baby (plus being so TIRED!)…hellbennt2012-05-23 18:01:44
May 23, 2012 at 6:50 pm #70385AnonymousInactiveI too took one of my boys to a chiropractor and didn’t notice any changes but I know a lot of babies have gotten help that way. I think that it could help with simple reflux but not sure if it would if a child has food intolerances.
