I am more confused than ever. Background info- Jackson is 19 mos. He had been on 2 15mg doses of prevacid (total 30 mg) from 2 mos to 18 mos. Prior attempts at weaning failed. Doc told us to take him off cold turkey (huge mistake/ caused diarrhea and rash with sores on bottom). Seemed to not experience reflux for 3 weeks after cold turkey split from prevacid. After 3 weeks, he had some signs of reflux. He actually spit up 3 times (had not done this since 13 mos), coughing at night, poor eating, waking up early in the morning (usually wakes around 7:30 and was waking up at 6:30), fussy when putting him down at night, waking up edgy in the morning/unexplained crying. I took him to ENT- no ear infection, so that was ruled out. Started him on 15 mg at night of prevacid for 4 days, no signs of improvement. Yesterday, I boosted it up to 30 mg again and he went down easy at night and slept until 8 am. When he woke up, he acted like he used to. I am now wondering- was it the medication or was he sick? He did not really have many signs of sickness (no fever, no vomiting, etc). He just had that cough at night, which I took to be a sign of GERD. However, I am wondering if the medication could even work that fast. I am wondering if he really only needs 15 mg at this point and that is why the 30 mg worked so fast. He had been on 15 mg for 4 days, but the positive changes did not appear until the double dose yesterday. This is my current plan- keep him on 30 mg for a month to give him some relief if needed. Then, reduce by 1/2 pill for a few weeks, and keep reducing by 1/2 pill every few weeks. What do y’all think? Is it possible for the medication to kick in that fast? Does it work faster on a body that has been on the medication for so long and off of it for only a few weeks. So confused!
