It looked like constipation was over..but, my dd pooped 6 times since this morning(after 2 days of no poop) and I can see very fine black dots (around 10 of them) like coffee grounds each time I change her poopy diapers. There are loads of mucous (she always had them). It does seem that she is lots more gassier now.

Iam concerned about those black dots in her poops. Is it normal??? I gave a call to her Ped’s office and yet to receive their response….

coffee grounds is a ‘classic’ description of dried blood coming out in the stools…sorry to alarm you…sounds like mspi and or/allergy, especially along with the mucous…

not what you wanted to hear…

Sangeetha,

Please push your doctor if they do not respond to your message- as Laura said, coffee grounds is usually a sign of bleeding somewhere in the GI tract. Please keep us posted.

The nurse called back and says that those black dots could be residue from the apple sauce. I give her one spoon of applesauce twice a day with Prilosec since one month. I replied that possibly it can’t start suddenly. She asked me to wait and watch for 3-4 days and get back to her.

Iam seeing clear mucous today…its like someone blowing their nose in her diapers (sorry for this!!!) and her whole diaper area is bright red with rashes..I have read that this could be due to allergy too.

Laura, I will post in yahoo groups too….but I was wondering how I can see dried blood without seeing fresh (?)blood earlier..did I miss out earlier blood??? I did see some bright red dots a couple of months back and demanded tests. The stool test was negative for both blood and mucous. Iam confused…

I was wondering whether Probiotics/enzymes will help her. Her Ped GI dismissed the idea of Probiotics…..she is so prone for yeast infections..wish doctors listen to me and my husband is on my side

you could see dried blood w/o seeing fresh bcse the blood could be from somewhere inside and by the time it gets pooped out, it’s ‘old’…

you could bring a stool sample in & demand for a test of what’s called occult blood…I think this would tell you for sure…

mucous can be a sign of allergy or intolerance- there’s a difference…but basically it means baby is reacting to something in diet& since you’re breastfeeding, it most likely is due to something in your diet- most common is to milk and/or soy proteins

OMG, yesterday I saw clear blood in her poops…I went to her Ped, who said that it does not sound like diarrhea due to viral infection. Ped says me to get back to GI for any increase in dosage and suggestions. Ped did not even see her poopy diaper or recommend any tests …now I have GI appt only on April 14th… Ped even seconded my dh’s suggestion to start rice cereal (my dd was constipated last time on it and I stopped it) while I did not like that suggestion as her system is already senstive to something and adding a new thing might aggrevate..its soooo bad..

Meanwhile, I have my dd on Neocate and started rice cereal ..still seeing mucous and she is pooping 4 times from 11 times before. I have noticed a wierd thing now…she takes Prilosec in applesauce and her poops within hours of this turns greenish with more mucus..this happens both the times (when she takes her am and pm dosages). Her poops are not greenish the other times of day. Is she allergic to apples? or she is having trouble with Prilosec itself??? AARRGGHH Iam not getting answers.

Sounds like she could be allergic to apples… Can you get in early to see GI? Have you called?

The GI nurse returned back our calls after 3 days. She says that GI doc wants us to have endoscopy on March 7th and till that time we should be on Neocate. She also said that endoscopy could be cancelled incase blood/mucus clear up by that date. Now, the poops are still mucusy and tarry (due to Neocate)..how can I make out the dried blood in those tarry poops and still no change in dosage (she looks like she’s in very low dosage of 10mg/day of Prilosec)..I seriously worry the delay in handling this case..can a baby wait so long??
