Here we go again. Benjamin has another ear infection. I know I’m adding my voice to a huge ear infection chorus here, but I am so frustrated and so sad for him too. It seems like he just got over the last one, and his ears were perfect for his 9 month check up (less than 2 weeks ago).
This is his third infection in 4 months, and there was no cold before this one as with the other two. I asked about seeing an ENT, and the NP said that they usually would refer someone under the age of 6 months who had had three infections already, but because of his age, and because of the end of the virus season, she thought we should wait.
I have a feeling though that all of his infections are actually due to allergies (hay fever), since he didn’t start getting them until March. If that’s the case, this won’t be his last one.
Anyway, she put him on Omnicef which finally cleared up the last one. Hopefully it will work the first time this time, though I’m worried because he just had it a few weeks ago. We are supposed to go to the beach on Sunday! The thought of all being in one room with a miserable, sick baby is enough to make me just want to stay home.
And of course I put off getting a milk free probiotic for him, so we will have the digestive upset as well. Lovely.
Thanks for letting me gripe!
June 26, 2007 at 4:27 pm #38003AnonymousInactiveI am so sorry that Ben has another ear infection. Have they thought about putting tubes in his ears? It just seems like it would be a good option, but I have no clue, just thinking out loud. I sure hope he feels better soon.

June 26, 2007 at 6:37 pm #38025AnonymousInactiveAww, poor Ben. Ear infections are so yucky and I’m sure he’s so uncomfortable. Man, the hits just keep on coming for you guys!!!! Kate was on omnicef for her FIRST bladder infection and I was hoping the antibiotic she’s on now(future UTI preventative)would miraculously come without the side effect of the runs but no such luck. In addition to the Mylanta with the Zegerid, explosive poop is our middle name…..that was more then you wanted to know. Sorry I really hope he gets better soon for ALL of you. The beach sounds like fun!!!!! I wanna come!!!
June 26, 2007 at 7:34 pm #38030AnonymousInactiveI’m so sorry to hear about another ear infection, I know how miserable it is! Do you think they are willing to start him on Zyrtec or something for his allergies to see if that would help with the drainage that may be causing his ear infections?
June 26, 2007 at 7:39 pm #38032AnonymousInactiveOh no!!! I hate ear infections!
June 26, 2007 at 8:00 pm #38035AnonymousInactiveI asked about Zyrtec, Sue, and the PA said that they don’t usually do that until they are 1 because there is no dosing guidelines for infants younger than that. I wondered about this since his regular pediatrician suggested that we might try that when we were in there a couple of weeks ago. She just suggested using Benedryl, which I hate because it wipes him out.

June 26, 2007 at 9:37 pm #38063AnonymousInactiveSarah had SEVEN ear infections in her short life before we were finally referred to an ENT. My friend is a developmental therapist and had a training at St. Louis Children’s Hospital a few weeks ago. They met with the head Audiologist at the hospital and she said that children under one should be referred to an ENT after TWO infections! I couldn’t believe it! I thought 7 was toooooooo many for Sarah…but I wish all doctors were as proactive as they are! I would push a little harder for a trip to a ped. ENT. POOR BEN and POOR MOMMY!!!!
June 26, 2007 at 10:40 pm #38066AnonymousInactiveTaylor has been on Zyrtec RX by her allergist since she was 5 months old. She was on 1/4tsp once a day and now up to 1/2tsp but we can go up to 1tsp if needed. The Peds MD was willing to RX it too but since we had all the allergy testing we just stuck to the Allergist RXing it. I would give it a try over Benadryl. I do see a difference when she is on it especially when she is outside.
June 27, 2007 at 8:42 pm #38149AnonymousInactiveInteresting… makes you wonder what makes these doctors decide how they are going to treat these little ones the way they do.
Anyway, I have a call into his pediatrician about an ENT referral. Hopefully he will humor me. We’ll see.
