I’ve only been on the TED for 3 days and I’m so hungry! We’re on a bit of a tight budget and combining that with the foods I’m able to eat, well it just isn’t very satisfying. I have turkey for dinner, and then leftovers for lunch, but by early afternoon I’m starving. I’m snacking on pears and ricecakes and did sweet potato fries this morning but now my stomach is growling and I don’t know what to eat. I went through an entire bag of potato chips between Sunday night and Monday.
We’re going to buy a whole turkey tomorrow when the local market gets some fresh/additive free ones in.Added to that, I’m having weight issues (or my scale is totally messed up). I was 114 lbs on Sunday when I started the TED, and today it is reading 112. That’s teetering on the edge for me and I’m afraid of losing my abundant milk supply. Should I try to pump? Can I do supplements for milk supply on the TED?November 11, 2009 at 2:44 pm #64512hellbenntKeymasterthis was posted on page 6 of this very forum- it’s about adding some nutrients to your diet- look for ones that are free of dairy and soy:
Walgreens brand prenatal vitamins “Finest Prenatal Complete”
Solgar Calcium Magnesium with Vitamin D. “Free of yeast, wheat,
soy, and dairy products and are formulated without the use of
preservatives, artificial flavors or colors.”Country Life Milk-free Power-Dophilus. “No: Yeast, wheat, soy,
gluten, milk, salt, sugar, starch, preservatives or artificial color.”
http://www.country-life.com. Also found at Vitamin World stores.this was also found on page 6- go pig out on some of these, lol!
(Thank you to ‘Luke’s mom’ for posting this on the QuickTopic MSPI board.)
Here’s what she said about “the Crispy treat recipe that Luke’s
dietician gave me: Boil 1 cup of Rice Syrup (I use Lundburgs) shut off
heat and stir in 3 cups of Erewhon’s crispy rice cereal (I use the
gluten-free). Transfer into a dish to cool and enjoy! I have been
eating a ton of these as we are still on a pretty basic TED.”hellbennt2009-11-11 14:46:10

As far as the Power-Dophilus, I looked at that in the store but decided to go with another company because it listed maltodextrin in the ingredients and I know that can be a corn product so I wanted to stay away from that.I made the crispy rice treats the other day and the brown rice syrup has a strange aftertaste that is going to take some getting used to!thanks!November 11, 2009 at 4:15 pm #64519AnonymousInactiveHi!
I was on very limited TED for a LOOOOONG time (around 7 mths) so I can certainly relate to what you’re struggling w/ right now.
First & foremost, your weight & supply:
To MAINTAIN QUANTITY of milk supply:
-Do no lose more than 1/2-1 lb/wk
-Eat at LEAST 1500 calories/day (1800-2200 is best- 1500 is the minimum)
-Eat at least 30 grams of fat/day
-Eat at least 30 grams of protein/day
-Drink at least 64 oz of fluid/day & add 8 oz of extra fluid for every caffeine drink you have (coffee, soda, etc)
To INCREASE QUANTITY of milk supply:
-Of course, letting baby nurse more often is the best (but I know, not always possible)
-Pumping 5-10 min. after every nursing session is 2nd best (again, not always possible)
-Fenugreek 3-4 pills 3x/day (this will make you smell like maple syrup but that’s normal…well, normal for someone taking Fenugreek)
-Blessed Thistle 3 pills 3x/day
-Oatmeal (the traditional kind or oatmeal bars, cookies, etc)
-Beer…the darker the better – Guinness is the best
-Mother’s Milk Tea
To MAINTAIN &/OR INCREASE QUALITY of milk supply (ie: make it higher in fat, etc):
-Eat at least 30 g of fat/day (easy sources: avocado & olive oil… I use olive oil for EVERYTHING)
–>The fat in your diet is a huge indicator of the good fat in your breastmilk
-Eat at least 30 g of protein/day
As a sidenote: obviously the suggestions in the increasing your supply are not all “TED-friendly” (ie: oatmeal, beer, etc). I would be hesitant to start any supplements (fenugreek, blessed thistle) until you have a ‘baseline’ for TED/baby but you do what you have to….
As far as the starving part of it (& budget conscious):
I’m assuming you’re eating the traditional TED items (but correct me if I’m wrong).
Plain sweet potatoes (w/ sugar & mashed w/ a fork) are a great snack & take the hunger off usually. I bought the microwavable bags & they took about 8 min to cook in the microwave. I used to eat 2-3/day. Also, you should be able to get some great deals on them right now w/ Thanksgiving coming up.
Chips are a GREAT source of calories/fat but unfortunately not very filling.
Rice is a good filler too. If you want to sweeten it up (for a snack) add some sugar. Or there’s a recipe for TED friendly rice pudding (let me know & I can find it)… but I made it & thought that rice w/ sugar was about the same taste-wise & much easier/quicker.
Potatoes in general are filling too… lots of variety here. I have a huge list of things I ate if you want more info- I’ll copy & paste it.
I found that turkey didn’t fill me up *that* much… BUT I will say that turkey sausage (just make sure you look @ the ingredients) were an easy, quick source of fat & helped w/ the morning hunger.
Hang in there!!! My biggest piece of advice is to make sure you’re writing it all down (food, calories, fat, protein, fluids) so you have a log & you KNOW your body is getting what it needs.

The multivitamin is took is this: http://wholesalesupplementstore.com/daily-total-oneaday.html
They are vegetarian capsules & free of the ‘biggies’ (milk, soy, gluten, etc). I haven’t had any issues w/ them.
The calcium I take is just the generic “calciumcitrate+” from my grocery store (or Target). The only thing about these is that one of the inactive ingredients is starch. SO, I didn’t start these until recently when Evan started tolerating more foods (although I’m sure many babies could tolerate them fine).
Here’s a suggestion for TED safe calcium supplement that a good friend suggested to me (& I think Dianne also took this):
