Our first signs of my daughter’s milk allergy was a rash that started on her face and gradually spread to the rest of her body. However, in our case, it spread very slowly. The doctor kept saying that it was just eczema. He didn’t take it seriously until it turned into hives/boils all over her body. That didn’t happen until she started eating solids and drinking whole milk.
My younger daughter now has a similar situation and the doctor is again insisting that it is just eczema and refusing to acknowledge that neocate is different from nutramigen. I’m about to order some neocate to see if it makes a difference.
If the rash is caused by the milk proteins in nutramigen, I doubt that switching will make a difference, but it’s always worth a try.
November 6, 2006 at 6:37 pm #17308AnonymousInactiveI decided to go ahead and switch b/c I heard the % of proteins in Alimentum was 17% and 20 something in nutramigen. He’s been on it for two days and seems better. He hasn’t been spitting up nearly as much and hasn’t screamed once during a feeding. He did wake up early today (5:20 instead of 7:00 a.m.) and was screaming. But he just had a bunch of gas. n fact, he passed a lot of gas all day today. I just kept giving him those gas drops. I “think” his rash looked a little bit better today, but maybe I am just wishing that it did.
His rash did the same thing – starting on his face and gradually spreading all over. I pray that it improves and doesn’t get to that “boil” phase. Hopefully this formula will work and we won’t have to go to the neocate.
November 6, 2006 at 7:29 pm #17309AnonymousInactiveevery formula switch has a “honeymoon” period….
November 6, 2006 at 7:47 pm #17310AnonymousInactiveGreat… So… by “honeymoon” period I presume you mean that he could still turn around and have the exact same problems he had with nutramigen? How long is the typical “honeymoon” period?
November 6, 2006 at 7:50 pm #17311hellbenntKeymasterit can take 2 weeks for a formula switch to show it’s effect
actually, 2wks is about the amount of time it takes any change, medicine, formula, etc, to show it’s full effect…
have you read the link about ‘the misconceptions about elemental formlas?’ this explains a lot- it’s linked to from the ‘main’ mspi link (found from my welcome/intro, given above)
November 6, 2006 at 7:57 pm #17312AnonymousInactiveAidan gets rashes all the time, but that’s all they are, just rashes, either heat rash or (now that it’s cold) a rash from the wind, for a while he had a wicked case of drool rash on his cheeks(and chest, the kid was a faucet). He’s just a rashy kid.I do know that a lot of the rashy babies on here ended up on with mspi or allergy related issues however. Always good to cover all your bases just in case. I didn’t bother b/c it was obvious that Aidan’s rashes were environmental, and he just has sensative skin.
November 6, 2006 at 8:58 pm #17321AnonymousInactiveAlana is on pepti-junior- semi-elemental and does well. Her symptoms weren’t so much skin related, more pain in the belly etc.
But anytime I put any kind of soap, non-soap ie johnsons, anything other than water anywhere near her skin it drys it out. The maternal child and health nurse just said- use water. So thats what I do. She doesn’t smell as nice….. but her skin is great.
I know I get bad ecxma (never have known how to spell it, maybe its because my scalp is so full of it that my brain can’t work!) when I am stressed. Lets face it, most reflux babies must be pretty stressed- if not intellectually at least physiologically.
So, in a round about way, whilst it could be a milk protein allergy, it could also just be an allergic reaction to something topical? Eg I also get it, as does my husband if we change clothes washing powder.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was an easy answer for something?
I’m of to mothers group, where I feell much better because I realise other bbies cry and scream and they don’t have reflux!!!!!!! LOL
November 7, 2006 at 9:36 am #17343AnonymousInactiveMy kids are all like that….they get wind burned cheeks, they are sensitive to laundry soaps and will get a rash on their cheeks if I don’t use free and clear laundy soaps. I can only us Dove Unscented on them or their skin dries out and they get eczema. When they were infants milk did seem to make it worse, but by 1 year the milk didn’t seem to effect it anymore.
November 8, 2006 at 12:50 pm #17438AnonymousInactiveWent to the pediatrician today. He said that the rash (which has much improved since switching to Alimentum) did look like an allergic type rash because it was so diffuse. He’s been on the Alimentum for 5 days now. He hasn’t cried during one feeding. HOORAY. He has spit up, but only a little bit. I noticed a little increase gas with the Alimentum, but he is much improved. The nurse practitioner today said that she has had other pts who have switched from Nutramigen to Alimentum and done better. Keep your fingers crossed during the “honeymoon period.”
November 10, 2006 at 12:33 pm #17616AnonymousInactiveIt sounds like the alimentum helped! That is great!
November 10, 2006 at 1:51 pm #17625AnonymousInactiveGreat news! I hope he continues to do well on Alimentum. Thanks for the update.
November 10, 2006 at 8:08 pm #17651AnonymousInactiveI maybe have jinxed myself. Baby was doing great on the Alimentum and then last night, was fussy during the bottle and spit up a bunch. Today, didn’t cry a lot, but didn’t really take a bottle well. Tonight was very fussy and didn’t drink the bottle. He had his 2 month immunizations on Wednesday, so I am wondering whether his behavior today and late yesterday was due to the shots or if his problems are returning… Your thoughts??
Can a baby have reflux only for a few hours at night??? If his reflux was back, wouldn’t he be fussy and crying and spitting up at every feeding?
November 10, 2006 at 8:32 pm #17654AnonymousInactivereflux symptoms arent necessarily 24/7. they can come and go and some days are worse than others. if its not treated though, it will get BAD until eventually every bottle is a battleground and the baby will be hurting.
the shots can make them uncomfortable for severeal days though. alimentum and nutrimagen are almost indentical, so you may eventually need to go to neocate. it did wonders for my son.November 10, 2006 at 8:37 pm #17655AnonymousInactivewhen shane had his immunizations both times, he would not drink his bottle either. it is the only times we have ever not seen him want his bottle (he is more of a comfort eater). soo, dont worry it could be just from the shots
November 10, 2006 at 9:15 pm #17668AnonymousInactiveAidan always got really sick after his imunizations for a few days, horrible reflux, low grade fever, he just felt like crap. His reflux is under control, and I believe he is pain free, but that being said, it does kick up at night or if he has been crying, and just kind of annoys him.
