My daughter has been on augmentin for 8 days. Today she kept breaking out in hives all day, off and on, in different places on her body. It seemed like the hives were especially bad where her clothing was touching her skin. (The clothes were not washed in a new detergent or anything). After racking my brain all day as to what could be causing this, I remembered that she’s on antibiotics for her ear infection. She’s never had antibiotics before and I wonder if this is an allergy to penicillin (sp)? I left a message for the doctor but haven’t heard back yet. Anyone else experience this?

I’m off to bed, but maybe check out http://www.askdrsears.com as well…
October 26, 2006 at 10:22 am #16630AnonymousInactivei would take her off of the antibiotics immediately and consider her allergic to penicillin. an allergy to an antibiotic can pop up at any time. it just isn’t worth taking the chance.
October 26, 2006 at 10:35 am #16631AnonymousInactiveI would stop the amox and consider her allergic to penicillin as well. The longer you are exposed the more sever the reaction can be.
Also, be careful of drugs that are cephalosporins like Ceclor. A small percentage of people that are allergic to penicillin are also allergice to those. I am one of the lucky ones and I had a very bad reaction to Ceclor.

my boys are allergic to pennicillin also. after 4 days on augmentin (for and ear infection) when they were about 5 months old, they broke out in hives from head to toe- both at the same time! i took them right into the ped who said that it was an allergic reaction. i had thought that maybe it was chicken pox!
we’ve never done a trial or anything to see if it’s something that they have outgrown. the ped feels that it’s too risky and there are other antibiotics that we can use.
October 26, 2006 at 1:40 pm #16638AnonymousInactiveI get the same reaction to amoxicillin and clyndamicyn. I would stop the meds and contact the doc.
October 26, 2006 at 2:06 pm #16644AnonymousInactiveI get the same reaction to sulpha-drugs – bad hives. Sounds like an allergic
reaction to me – hope she feels better soon.
October 26, 2006 at 2:43 pm #16646AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. The doctor said not to give her anymore of the medicine (she was almost done anyway). They are not going to consider her allergic to the drug quite yet, since she’s had other skin issues/hives before unrelated to drugs. But the next time she needs antibiotics, they will evaluate the situation then and decide what to prescribe. She also started whole milk a couple weeks ago, so maybe that is causing the problem but she hasn’t shown any other signs of allergy to milk (no diarrhea, eczema, etc.). The dr’s office is pretty sure it’s the antibiotic.
She goes for food allergy testing (eggs & watermelon) in a week, and I wonder if there’s any way they can test for penicillin while they’re at it!!
October 26, 2006 at 4:28 pm #16656AnonymousInactiveI think there is a test. I asked because in my sleep deprived fog I once forgot which one of my children was allergic to Penicillin. I asked if they could be tested and was told yes. But, later I remembered it was Eliana, so no need for a test.
October 27, 2006 at 12:20 am #16666AnonymousInactivei get hives from cephalosporins, too, but i have no problem with penicillin.
