My 2 yr old ds still suffers badly from Reflux. It effects his sleep badly.
Recently his eyes have been very irritated, red and causing him discomfort. His nose has been runny and he has had a chronic cough for months.
I started giving him Benydryl 2 days ago and it has helped tremendously. His eyes no longer bother him, his nose has cleared up and his cough is almost gone.
Normally he wakes up 5 to 10 times a night. Last night we gave him Benydryl and he slept through night!
I wonder if the cause for all the symptoms including the reflux could be allergies. We need to get him to an allergist, but the waiting list is more than 6 months.
Does anyone have info regarding allergies and reflux? Or taking allergy meds to help reflux?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
TIA!!

good luck.November 2, 2009 at 10:02 pm #64428AnonymousInactiveI agree with Leo… it could also be seasonal allergies that are causing the red eyes and runny nose, I would think that the benadryl is going to work on those first. My son is on 3 allergy meds but his are all environmental allergies. You may want to go ahead and call the allergist and then get put on a cancellation list to see if they can get you in sooner. You will not be able to give benadryl or any antihistamine for several days before you go in for testing to make sure it is accurate.

You might want to try something less sedating like Zyrtec or claritin so your little one isn’t sleepy all the time from the benedryl.I agree that the runny nose, etc. could be environmental as opposed to foods. Personally I would go get your son allergy tested before eliminating foods unless you have a strong suspicion about particular ones. Are you trying to get in to see a pedi allergist or just any ol’ allergist?? I know here, trying to get into a pedi allergist takes 6 months or more. But, I can go down the street to the allergy dr. that treats me and get in in 2 weeks. Also, your regular pediatrician could order RAST testing (Bloodtesting for allergies) from a local lab. They can test any foods you want, plus environmental allergies as well.December 5, 2009 at 10:32 am #64940AnonymousInactiveThanks for your reply.
Yes, we saw a big improvement in his reflux while on the Benadry. Not sure exactly why though. There are several factors that it could be, such as the post nasal drip drying up.
We got him the RAST and skin prick test. Both were for foods and environmentals. All test came back negative.
They said he could have an intolerance to foods and/or an irritant causing his discomfort. Both of these would not show up on an allergy test.
They gave us a Rx for Claritin. I don’t think it works as well as the Benadryl though. Maybe we will just do benadryl once a day at night so he can at least get some sleep. I have to check with the allergist on this though since I’m not sure what the risk are.
