Today will be day 7 of Alimentum switch. So far pretty good, I think,
but totally analyzing everything. She is eating more – up to 30 or so
ounces/day instead of 26 or so on Neocate. She seems to like it more
and it stays down MUCH better (thicker/smoother). So far sleeping well
and seems relatively happy. Just hard to tell since she most likely has
a cold now (DH had a doozy of one last week and I have congestion from
it now too). Since starting the Alimentum, she CONSTANTLY has her thumb
or fingers jammed into her mouth – even sometimes tries to jam it in
there while eating bottle. But she’s seemed like teething for a long
time and I feel many bumps so maybe something’s finally close?Less hiccups, less wet burps. More gas – but could that just be
digestive system adjusting? BMs are improving (was so constipated so
far) and so far no blood or mucous in stools. Still lots of
grunting/turning red to pass them but she’s always done that. Playing
nicely – but getting very fussy in saucer – but that seems to be
related to teething – she can’t get all the toys in her mouth. Happy
playing on tummy though.Broke out in what looks like baby acne on patch of forehead between
eyes/right above nose and a tiny bit on nose. But she’s also had her
hand in her mouth constantly and is always touching/rubbing her face.I’d really like to stay on the Alimentum if she can as she drinks it
better and it stays down better without thickening – but of course not
if she’s having any reaction.Does this all sound like normal and likely teething and digestive
system adjusting? I plan to call Ped today anyway to get Pepcid refill
and ask about probiotics (was wondering if would make sense to have her
on MSPI safe probiotics for 1-2 weeks since she had a lot of
antibiotics at birth)?Thanks in advance.
February 1, 2006 at 9:58 am #445AnonymousInactiveIsaac has the acne looking rash on his forehead right now too! I am not sure what it is and the ped said it was no big deal. He said it could be a rash from him drooling from teething or heat rash.
It sounds like she may just get a lot of teeth in at once. Sometimes it seems like they are going to be teething forever doesn’t it?
February 1, 2006 at 10:21 am #453AnonymousInactiveThanks Sarah. Yea – definitely seems like might be multiple teeth at once – poor girl. Totally takes forever!
February 1, 2006 at 8:49 pm #492AnonymousInactiveI realize that our case is unusual, but, looking back, we now realize that our first signs of Kaelyn’s milk allergy was her baby acne and cradle cap. Her ped kept saying that it was totally normal. We thought that it was related to teething and rubbing her hands on her face, but as she got older the rash spread (or switched places). Like you said, the little patches of acne could be nothing, but I’d keep an eye on it just in case.
February 1, 2006 at 9:15 pm #497AnonymousInactiveZach had that on his face while he was teething too. He never was
on Neocate but did well on the Alimentum so I know his wasn’t from
that. As far as being fussy in the saucer, that started for us
when Zach was to the age that he wanted to be able to crawl and get
into his brother’s stuff!!! That’s probably not much help but hopefully the Alimentum will continue to work for you!February 2, 2006 at 6:20 am #511AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. Kim – I’ll definitely keep an eye on the acne and on any
other rashes. She did have cradle cap when she was a newborn and on the
regular Alimentum and Goodstart. If we see any rashes spreading, would
you suggest allergy testing and if so, what kind? She is congested but definitely has a cold – DH and I both do too. But she’s sleeping really well.
It’s so hard to tell!
She’s having a lot of gas now – particularly when she eats. But it
seemed like she was before on the Neocate too – just that now she’s
actually passing more of the gas instead of it getting trapped. Ped
thinks her digestive system is adjusting and also cleaning out and
trying to normalize after being constipated for so long.Do you think it might help to put her on 1-2 weeks of MSPI safe
probiotics to help her digestive system adjust? Ped seems to think
un-necessary but wonder since I was on antibiotics twice while pregnant
(once for UTI, once when had emergency appendectomy) and she had 48
hours of antibiotics immediately after birth and she did have the one
episode of thrush… Could it hurt anything?knb182006-2-2 6:59:12

Sorry but what are the probiotics? What are they used for and are they common? Never heard of this.
We learn everything on this site, huh?
Thank you.

February 2, 2006 at 12:33 pm #527AnonymousInactiveProbiotics, like acidophilus, are supposed to replace the good
bacterial in the gut and are usually used when one is on antibiotics
and/or after a bout of diarrhea. Neither of which we have currently,
but…The eating here is odd. Totally seems gas related, not reflux, and only
really bothers her when eating – she is sleeping great. Not sure what
to think.February 2, 2006 at 10:03 pm #571AnonymousInactiveKaren, I’m not sure what they would do for allergy testing on someone as young as Marisa. They did a RAST blood test on Kaelyn first and then followed up with skin prick testing.
February 3, 2006 at 6:03 am #579AnonymousInactiveI was worried about that Kim. But we are so tired of guessing at
everything and not having answers. Plus right now she definitely has a
cold so that’s confusing matters. We see our Ped next week for 6-month
well visit and need to have a long talk with her. Just can’t tell what
is teething, cold, formula, reflux, etc… -
