You asked about cyproheptad. I have had Gabriel on cyproheptad (also called Periactin) for a couple of months. I think he is a better eater now than he was at first–but I was not able to give it to him last week because of allergy testing and I did not notice any difference in his eating habits. He may just be improving on his own. He is still a picky eater and it is hard to find things that are MSPI safe. My pediatrician said that she has not noticed much of a difference in children taking it–that she sees is more as a way to help anxious parents feel like they are doing something. I have heard from other parents on the boards that it is most effective one week on and one week off–since the side effect of increased appetite can wear off.

Ashtyn also takes this as well. We don’t do the 1 week on & then off but we recently just started giving it about every 3rd day. It seems the day after the dose she eats well. The next day good, but not great & then it seems that she does bad on day 3 so we give her a dose & the cycle continues. Also, AShtyn is in eating therapy so that is helping as well. She has finally started to gain a bit again. Today was the day after her dose last night & she ate 3 good meals & then wanted to pretty much snack all day in between meals. It seems I was feeding her all day! I don’t mind though.

Thanks for the responses. I seem to notice a little difference when she is on the medications. She use and still does chipmunk most of her food but when she is on the medications she actually does much better at actually chewing. She seems to rather snack on food here and there and gets up on the chair to find little things to eat which is much different then it use to be. I just didn’t really know what to expect, I guess I wish it were a miracle cure to make her eat everything under sun but I will settle with her actually willing to eat versus crying. I’m glad to hear that Gabriel and Ashtyn have good days on the medicine as well.
