My little one has just turned 2 months old. He was originally on Enfamil Newborn Premium, at 3 weeks he started having issues eating. Originally me and his pediatrician thought it was gas since he would squirm when feeding so she put him on Enfamil Gentlease on which he did worse. I researched some and thought it might be a milk intolerance and switched him to Nutramigen on which he did a tad better for a week and then got really bad. He started refusing to eat, arching his back and crying all the time. I went back and she put him on Zantac suspension 0.7 ml twice a day. He did better for about a week and then again started acting up. We then switched him to Prevacid 7.5 mg twice a day and put him on Enfamil AR. He was doing better for a few weeks until one night he vomited out of his nose and mouth violently, that night and the next day he refused to eat at all. So back to the doctor we went and she told me to restart the Zantac as well with the Prevacid and gave me Carafate. I did those 3 meds for a few days and when he started eating stopped the Zantac and Carafate. My ped referred us to a GI specialist, we saw him yesterday and I am not sure what to make of his suggestions. He told me to stop the Prevacid since he thinks it does not work at all and can cause phnemonia, he wants me to do only the Zantac at 1.2 ml twice daily. He also said to stop the AR and go back to the regular Enfamil newborn and if his reflux acts up to mix in oatmeal at 1 tsp per ounce. I don’t want to go backwards since he was doing better. He now eats 2 ounces well but then when I burp him and try to feed the rest he starts crying, the AR is constipating him which does not help since he strains when feeding. Prune juice has not helped much. I really feel like I have to clue what to do at this point with the different advice! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Just wanted to add he does not really spit up at all and has not vomited except that one time.

thickening bottles is very old fashioned and telling you that about prevacid is so weird.read all you can & make you own educated decisions. you are the parent & this is your baby.I can’t tell you what to do. But, I can provide you w/ links to information and you can then get a better idea of what to do. work w/ your knowledge and your pediatrician, who sounds reasonable.I have a LOT to say and most of it’s here, in a link called ‘groupie intro.‘
it’s looong but TRULY will help you- read through it, refer back to it, scroll through it/skim through it. You’ll find yourself coming back to it!

May 30, 2012 at 11:05 pm #70402AnonymousInactiveOh wow!! I have to agree that the GI is certainly not up to date! 🙁 I am so sorry that you have been given such confusing advice. That makes it so difficult to know what to do. I really think that your baby would benefit from taking a probiotic/enzyme supplement. If you want to read about how they helped my children with reflux and milk intolerance you can go to my blog help4acidreflux.wordpress.com
I hope you can soon find the answers you are looking for and get relief for your little one!
May 31, 2012 at 6:10 pm #70404AnonymousInactiveThank you for your quick reply Laura, I have lurked on this site for a while and read every thing possible, opened every link you have provided. I guess I am just looking for a thumbs up from you guys since you are definitely more experienced than me in this. I know the Prevacid works for him but should I try just the Zantac like the specialist says or don’t mess with it if it’s working? And as far as I understand the AR is really only helpful if the baby is spitting up/vomiting? If it is silent reflux is there even any point to using the AR or thickening the feed?
May 31, 2012 at 6:48 pm #70405hellbenntKeymasterMe, I say do what works. You can even add in zantac, too, making sure to seperate it 4hrs from the prevacid.
check to find proper dose, form & administration of prevacid…as for the thickened feeds, I would say not to. It’s my belief that these little ones already have sensitive systems and that they don’t need cereal so early. This is ME, though! There are plenty of parents that swear by thickened feeds!June 25, 2012 at 2:33 pm #70489hellbenntKeymasterplease, I’d love an update
June 26, 2012 at 12:11 pm #70501AnonymousInactiveHello, well I decided not to follow that crazy doctors advice because the last thing I need is for my son to go backwards. We ended up getting a second opinion from Dr.Munois at Miami Children’s Hospital, he was awesome! Anyone that lives in Miami or Broward should definitely see him if their child has issues. He put Whyatt on Nexium and told me to continue the AR if he is eating it well and to add prune baby food to the formula once a day. So far knock on wood he is doing great. He also had us do a reflux scan which showed mild to moderate reflux. I am happy I went for a second opinion. Just in case you guys don’t know this Enfamil AR has been discontinued, so we went out and bought enough to last at least 6 months. Thank you very much for all your advice!
