I am curious-
How many of your little ones had what seems like gas, trouble pooping, gurgly tummy AND reflux? Any out there with just the gas issue that ended up being somthung else?
Do they go hand in hand?
Tina

February 16, 2007 at 4:15 pm #25068AnonymousInactiveMyles had the trouble with pooping issue, but no major gas.
February 16, 2007 at 6:43 pm #25077AnonymousInactiveChristine,
So was he constipated or just seemed to always be pushing while eating?? Did he go everyday or would it be a few days?
I went to the ped on thurs and he recommended rice cereal. I just gave him the first bottle with some, and he actually is staying asleep ( knock on wood ). Gosh, has he just been starving this whole time?
What’s the difference between being satisfied on 3 ounces of BM and cereal or 6 ounces of BM? I don’t get it.
February 16, 2007 at 8:03 pm #25082AnonymousInactiveKaelyn had all of those issues until we switched to nutramigen. Then we were just dealing with the reflux (until the milk proteins built up in her system and she got constipated.)
February 16, 2007 at 8:50 pm #25087AnonymousInactiveMyles was actually constipated, but that didn’t start until he was about 2 or three months old. I had to use a thermometer nearly every day to get him to go, until I started giving him prunes and other natural remedies at around 4 months.
We used oatmeal instead of rice due to his constipation issues. I think the theory about thickening is that it helps the food stay down, and if it helps the food stay down it may also keep acid down and prevent some of the reflux pain. It definitley does not work for all babies, though. It didn’t help with either of my refluxers. I hope it works for your little guy.
If you plan to stick with the rice just watch to make sure he doesn’t become gassy and constipated. If he does you may want to try oatmeal instead.
Good luck.
February 16, 2007 at 9:42 pm #25091AnonymousInactiveWell he just slept for almost four hours! Wow!
Not complaining, but now I’m confused, was he just hungry? Or like you said- is it holding the acid down better? I guess time will tell. Time- our best and worst enemy!
I am concerned about the poop/gas thing though… I have heard him over there kinda whimper and toot, but stays asleep…

February 17, 2007 at 10:14 am #25109AnonymousInactiveThat’s great! I hope it continues. Thickening does work for some babies. Maybe your little guy will be one of them.
I wouldn’t be too concerned about the gas thing yet. He’s very young and in the first few months most babies do grunt and make all kinds of faces when they toot and when thy poop. Our doc told us it’s because they are getting used to all the sensations that they don’t experience in the womb.
I’d just watch for constipation. Not so much how often he goes but the consistency. It his stools start looking very dry I’d start being concerned because that’s how it started with Myles and then it progressed to his stools becoming hard and he couldn’t pass them.
Good luck. I hope he continues to sleep well and that he’s feeling better with the thickened feeds.
February 18, 2007 at 5:01 pm #25196AnonymousInactiveChristine,
What would you describe as dry?? His look like if you mixed baking powder and water to make a kind of paste ( but yellow ). they are soft, but not really liquidy. Is this the formula ( powdered )?
February 18, 2007 at 7:29 pm #25210AnonymousInactiveWell, the first thing I noticed with Myles is that his stools started out the way most bf babies’ stools do…they were loose and seedy. Then they started to look pasty like you said, but I don’t how to explain it; they just looked dry, like it had been sitting in his diaper all day. I remember thinking mabye I was eating too many saltines (I craved them while I was nursing) and that it was dehydrating him because of all the salt. But I quit eating saltines and it didn’t get any better. Then he started straining and he just couldn’t pass his stools anymore without assistance. I had to use a thermometer to help him almost everyday until I started giving him prunes and other natural remedies.
If Cooper’s stools are soft and he’s not having trouble passing them, he’s probably fine. (Myles was turning beat red screaming and straining). The rice and formula will change his stools so that they are more formed and less liquidy.
February 18, 2007 at 8:49 pm #25216AnonymousInactiveYeah, that’s what his sounds like.
I am so sorry your little guy has so much trouble! Poor little man! You are/were only BFing right?? I was thinking maybe it was the formula. they seem to be the same so far with the rice…
I just realized there are whole conversations on this site about poop- too funny!
February 19, 2007 at 9:59 am #25232AnonymousInactiveMyles was on expressed breast milk except for one bottle of soy formula at bedtime.
Stick around and you are sure to see lots more threads in which poop is discussed at great length!!

What do you mean “milk proteins built up?” Interestingly my son got incredibly constipated when I started supplementing 1x per day with Nutramigen. Alimentum isn’t as bad, but he still isn’t back to being regular (he poops maybe every 3rd day, we help him out with suppositories and Gaviscon, which is supposed to loosen stool).
In response to the question, my son is incredibly gassy in addition to his reflux. He’s MPI, too, and since I cut out all dairy and beef he’s less refluxy, but not less gassy!. I think it’s actually the gas, not the acid that makes him unable to sleep. He wakes up and farts for a few minutes and then goes back to sleep, over and over!
February 21, 2007 at 8:28 am #25389hellbenntKeymasterthe proteins build up- that’s why the elimination diet needs to be done for 3 weeks…& why formula changes should be given 2 weeks…to clear the system of the (possibly/potentially) offending proteins… from the ‘main’ mspi page, on page 2 (look for ‘google cache’) there’s a great (albeit long) explanation about food intolerances and allergies
