Okay so first off im going to start out with the topic of *feedings*. I have some questions that I would love everyone’s opinion on. I got my doctors opinion, although mine is way different, so I wanted to hear what everyone else thought.
Conner eats a normal 4-5 ounce bottle every 4 hours. He gets about 3 feedings during the day. He usually is perfectly fine after eating, until his last feeding before bed at 9-9:30PM. He will eat the normal 4-5 ounces great…but at 10:30-11:30PM he is hungry again. My doctor told me to NOT feed him anything but to keep putting his pacifier in his mouth until he falls asleep….I believe Conner is to smart for that and knows the difference lol. He will cry and cry for hours upon hours until he gets that last bottle. If I do allow him the extra feeding, he is perfectly content and falls right to sleep for 5-6 hours between his next feeding.
So…..Do I allow him that extra bottle….or am I over feeding him and need to take my doctors advice…what do you think?
Second- The Zantac he is on does seem to be helping, but he is still spitting up. I seen posts asking how long it takes to notice that it is working, and from my conclusion it is different as every child is different, and every case of reflux is different. BUT…If the zantac were working…wouldn’t he stop spitting up?Cold Symptoms and Reflux- I know Reflux can mimic the symptoms of colic, which is why most cases of Reflux go untreated. The parent tries treating colic when infact the baby has a case of somewhat silent reflux. My question in this topic does relate to Conner, and I have been super stumped. Conner has had cold like symptoms since his reflux symptoms decided to make an appearance. He has the stuffy nose, coughing, sneezing(which is normal for newborns). Do cold symptoms and reflux go hand in hand? I know coughing is a sign of reflux….but does it have anything to do with the nasal congestion?Diarreah and Reflux- I know the Zantac can cause constipation and or Diarreah. BUT Conner has had the Diarreah since 4 weeks of age….2 weeks after starting the Nutramigen which seemed to have brought his reflux symptoms out of hiding. Does Diarreah have anything to do with reflux?Last but not least….this may sound crazy lol. Conner has this thing that drives me completely insane. My husband and I take turns getting up with him. For example, Hubby wakes up with him on Monday night, sleeps in Monday morning, and I have the boys( all 3) Monday Morning while hubby sleeps, then Tuesday night is my night to wake up with Conner and Sleep in during the day….hope that makes sence lol.Anywho, Conner finds it amusing to sleep all night for daddy with maybe the occasional *Feed me* scream once all night long. BUT…..My lovely son thinks it’s hilarious to keep mommy up every 30-60 minutes on her night to get up with him. Does my son hate me? lol. How can I get him to sleep on my nights like he does on hubby’s nights? Does it have to do with his baths? I tend to bathe him every other day…which happens to be on my nights….but I thought a bath was supposed to be soothing and help baby relax and sleep….especially when using the lavender bedtime bath and lotion. UHG! Id love some advice on this topic…..I think it is amusing because so many people think babies are stupid……but in reality they are smarter than we think lol.November 23, 2008 at 10:12 am #58912AnonymousInactiveNot sure how much I can help as I am the one who usually asks the questions!
As for overfeeding, how old is Connor and how many oz per day does he eat? I would tend to trust your gut instinct as he may be going through a growth spurt and need the extra calories. My little guy is on Zantac as well. I was told it deals with the acid but not the throwing up. I am afraid you need to hold him upright, not have tight waist bands around his tummy and do lots of laundry.Yes, I believe reflux does produce cold symptoms, at least it does with my baby. Ronan coughs, sneezes and is always congested.I have been trying to find the answer to the diarreah question as well since Ronan has had it before starting Zantac. He also has green poo -not sure what that means. Not sure about the bath – you could try a night where he does not get the bath. Do you usually feed him during the day? If so he may anticipate more food with you. I know my friend who breastfed could not go in to soothe her son during the night because he would scream until she fed him. Her DH had to go in instead.Hope that helps!November 23, 2008 at 10:58 am #58913AnonymousInactiveIf I am reading correctly, he is only 5 weeks old. Feed him if he is hungry, I say!
November 23, 2008 at 1:18 pm #58920hellbenntKeymasterI responded to your other post- but I also said yes, feed that baby!
I also calculated the zantac dose for you (other post) and there is PLENTY of room to INCREASE it…the meds do NOT stop the spit up, they help with the pain.
as for the congestion: yes this is reflux related- can even cause ear infrections- read through here, there’s a link from here, etc: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9001&PID=78373#78373
diarrhea: IS it diarrhea? or is it loose stools? here’s an explanation of what it is: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t081500.asp I don’t mean to offend! it’s just that it’s brought up a lot on this board, and w/ babies it can get confusing as to what is called what, LOL!as for bath/bed: try giving the bath earlier in the day…are you using all natural ingredients? maybe something in the bath is affecting him? who knows? maybe try an earlier bath with something by California Baby (sold at target I do believe), and also try no bath, etc.also: now that you can give more zantac, try a bigger dose at bedtime on your nightsNovember 23, 2008 at 1:24 pm #58921AnonymousInactiveFeed the baby. At one point my little man was taking 44oz of formula/day and taking some solids… Esp if he is only 5 wks old then he needs to eat as much as he can/wants to, esp if it makes him happy.
November 23, 2008 at 8:08 pm #58930AnonymousInactiveIf I was to increase his Zantac…how much more should I give him? Im not sure the amount of ML’s to body weight, he should be 11 pounds or a bit over that.
ThanksNovember 23, 2008 at 8:28 pm #58932hellbenntKeymasterI already calculated it for you on your other post, here:
zantac dose (don’t just take my word on this! read the link in the above post that I gave!):
YOU HAVE ROOM TO INCREASE ZANTAC DOSE!!baby weighs 11lbs (when he gains more, you can use this chart to figure out kilos: http://www.sfca.co.uk/match/kilolbs.htm)11lbs= 5 kilos
Maximum dose of zantac is 10mgs per kilo, so5 x 10 = 50 mgs of zantac a day, totalyour bottle should read 15mgs/mlso 50 divided by 15 = 3.3 mls a day, total, of zantac, divided into 2 doses & the doses can be ‘uneven’ with a higher dose given at night (or morning- whenver reflux seems to be worse)so: .8mls + 2.5mls1.3ml + 2mls1.7mls + 1.7mlsNovember 23, 2008 at 9:59 pm #58933AnonymousInactiveConners_Mommy wrote:

I’d feed him when hungry, he may jsut go back to sleep for you because he is saited.Second- The Zantac he is on does seem to be helping, but he is still spitting up. I seen posts asking how long it takes to notice that it is working, and from my conclusion it is different as every child is different, and every case of reflux is different. BUT…If the zantac were working…wouldn’t he stop spitting up?Meds will only stop the reflux/GERD form damaging anything form the acid. It willNOT however stop any spitting up or vomitting. JEdd is a perfect example of that. He coudl vomit 3-10 times epr day and NOT have any damage because his meds were high enough. As long as he is not acting like he is in pain, then I’d leave the dose alone. For example, we knew Jedd had out grown his dose when he was arching and screaming after/during a vomit. the vomit was causing him too much pain so we upped his dose. Our GI will ask me at everys ingle visti how Jedd acts when vomitting.Cold Symptoms and Reflux- I know Reflux can mimic the symptoms of colic, which is why most cases of Reflux go untreated. Do cold symptoms and reflux go hand in hand? I know coughing is a sign of reflux….but does it have anything to do with the nasal congestion?Yes those symptoms can and are realted to GERD.. Jedd had soo many recurrent ear infectin that they went ahad and place dtubes to hlep. They wre the BEST thign we ever did!!!! NO more since Jan of this year. You just want to make sure the GERD/reflux is not causing any breathing difficulties, like gasping or periods where breathing stops.Diarreah and Reflux- I know the Zantac can cause constipation and or Diarreah. BUT Conner has had the Diarreah since 4 weeks of age….2 weeks after starting the Nutramigen which seemed to have brought his reflux symptoms out of hiding. Does Diarreah have anything to do with reflux?Dirreah can be caused by an initolerance to something that is being eating drank. If it doens’t go away I would most certainly mention it to the GI. Again, our GI asks at EVERY single visit how many/how often/ and how hard Jedd’s stool are. It doesn’t matter if he was fine at the last visit, alot can change between visits. Now, an elemental fomrula like Nutramigen will CAUSE runny poos. Jedd was on Alimentum (similiar to Nutramigen) and he always had green runny poos. This is completely NORMAL for kid sto have that type of poo while on an elemenatla formula. Not to worry as long as other issues liek blood in stools are NOT presetn. Agian, I’d ask the GI and see hwwat he says, this is what ours told us.Last but not least….this may sound crazy lol. UHG! Id love some advice on this topic…..I think it is amusing because so many people think babies are stupid……but in reality they are smarter than we think lol.UM, maybe he knows Mommy is the one who plays with him….LOL Sorry to giggle at your expense…:)~Ask you DH what he doesn when he wakes in the night so that you BOTH can do the same routine and see if after a couple ofweeks you can get the same results…..November 23, 2008 at 11:33 pm #58935AnonymousInactiveat 5 weeks, i would consider 5-6 hours of sleeping as sleeping through the night—–i’d givea him the bottle. you could slowly work the time a little sooner every night for that later bottle, maybe.
zantac is worthless, in my opinion. PPI’s are the only way to go. (this is from the woman who is trying to ignore the fact that she is having trouble swallowing again and getting chest pain because PPI’s are too expensive)the smell of lavender bothers me immensly—maybe just give him a warm bath without lavender—or try having your husband give him a bath on his night and see what happens.here’s the best one yet, since he sleeps best for dad—i think that every night should be dad’s night to be the one to get up—-then connor might sleep every night!!!LOL!LOL!LOL!!November 24, 2008 at 7:49 pm #58954AnonymousInactiveKevieb- LOL I tried getting hubby to wake up every night and he didnt fall for it. On the second hand, I called my doctor to let him know that I didnt think the Zantac was working, he basically told me to *shove* off. He said the Zantac would work IF Conner truely has Reflux, and that the Zantac would work and ease babies pain if I stopped overfeeding him…How is 6 ounces every 3-4 hours to much for an almost 6 weeker?
Id like to try a PPI, and I would like to see a pedeatric GI, but I have to get a referal, and my doctor refuses to write one for me because he says he can fix the issue, which he simply isn’t.My poor baby is unhappy, and in pain, and I have to sit here and watch him suffer because my doctor is annoyed at the fact that I don’t think his *methods* are working.Hmm, Maybe it’s time to get a new doctor.November 24, 2008 at 8:07 pm #58955hellbenntKeymastertime to get a new doctor. yours sounds egotistical and perhaps doesn’t want you to go to another dr and pay someone else your co-pay? ok I’m being cynical, I’ll stop…but yes please DO go to another dr- your doctor should not with-hold a referral!

You go girl!!! I don’t think that’ scynical I think it’s the truth alot fo the times. We have a fantstic pedi and even she admitted Jedd’s issues were over her head and he need specialized care. that’s wha the specialist go to extra schooling ofr, to hlep out in their area.I as well, think it’s time for a new pedi if yours cannot admit that he neeeds help for you and you little one. -
