As I’m preparing for Owen’s first birthday, I am also preparing myself for his 1 year appt with pedi and wanting to make some decisions beforehand on how I’m going to proceed with weaning meds and trialing milk…… Sooooooo all you pro moms out there, which comes first?
Do I start with milk and keep him on the meds while we adjust to that? Did milk seem to make reflux flare? We are definately having less and less reflux symptoms, but definately still there. He has wet burps and swallowing in his sleep and then coughing/gagging during sleep. He has not had any puking in a long time (don’t want to jinx myself) but I can’t even remember the last throw up incident.I don’t really want to trial milk until 14-15 months to be safe. Again, don’t want to get too cocky! Food, including milk products have went well for about 6 or so weeks now. My concern is that doc said about a year we would probably wean meds and see what happens, I would like to get the milk thing over with first. I’m afraid he will talk me into decreasing meds and then the milk thing will increase reflux. Am I saying something that has never happened?????Well, any experiences would be welcome! I just want to have my plan in place before the pedi appt. I have had rather unwanted experiences with my doc, but as I have posted before, I kept with him b/c I felt like I was hooked with Owen’s extensive history. I didn’t have the energy in the middle of all of it to find another doc and explain the whole story! I don’t want to be talked into something that I don’t really agree with.September 18, 2007 at 2:50 pm #42875AnonymousInactiveWell, we are in about the same boat here. I also struggled with this decision. Ben’s reflux sounds about on the same plane as Owen’s. Still silent reflux, but no throwing up, and sometimes I don’t notice it at all.
What we decided to do was to try the milk first… as, if it is bothering him it could make the reflux worse, and if not properly medicated… then BAM!However, we just started with yogurt about 12 days ago, and you’ve done milk products for quite some time, right? My plan was to do other milk products first for about a month or so… then try to drop his dose down.. and then try whole milk. Does that make sense? I wasn’t really thinking of taking him completely off the Zegerid until after he was fine on the whole milk for awhile.. I just wanted to decrease his current dose.Does that help?September 18, 2007 at 7:15 pm #42887AnonymousInactiveWe did meds first. I figured that if it were the MSPI causing the reflux and we went to milk, the PPI would mask the reflux. But if we did the meds first and everything was OK we would know the only possible thing that could cause the reflux to return was dairy (because we still weren’t using it). If we then introduced the dairy and saw the reflux returned it would confirm the hypothesis that it was the MSPI causing the reflux.
Anyhow it turned out that she doesn’t need meds but she is still marginally intolerant- dairy however doesn’t cause her reflux but abdominal systems like gas and bloating. We decided to keep on the pepti junior for a little while longer. Then I had a change of heart because every time we tried milk before she had a cold or something. So we are doing a little bit of milk, a little bit of yoghurt and a little bit of soy and guess what- SO FAR SO GOOD. The only thing that really makes her react now is TOMATO.Long story, wasn’t it. Hope some of it makes sense, but I would recommend the meds first then the milk.September 18, 2007 at 7:27 pm #42890AnonymousInactiveI might also add that he is doing well with all milk products in foods, I haven’t left anything out and great results. So maybe I will forgo the meds and then try the milk? I don’t know.

I don’t know the exact title of the thread but it was identical! What we decided to do was lower her meds. dose first. Once I was comfortable that she was OK with it (3 weeks), I started a milk trial. Once she was happily drinking milk with no problems, I continued the meds wean. We got down to zero meds…but wound up adding back her night dose b/c she didn’t seem comfortable. That’s where we still are today. Guzzling whole milk, and just 12mgs of zegerid per day. I totally understand the frustration with wanting to accomplish both goals but knowing you can’t do them at the same time. It’s up to you, but we did a “combination” of both. GOOD LUCK!! The fact that he can tolerate milk products is a GREAT sign!

I haven’t given her any hidden dairy or soy yet, which I’m wondering if I should. The Pedi wants us to wait to see what the GI says… Dagney’s doing great now, though, and I hardly ever hear any reflux symptoms. We’ve tried twice to drop her doses, both unsuccessfully, but we did transition her over to Nutramigen with no problems. We are going back to the GI next week, and will see what she has to say. I’d like to get rid of the meds & the formula completely, but I know it will take a little bit of time. I’m hoping to at least drop from 30 to 22.5 mg/day of Prevacid, then go on to soy/dairy.
