Hi everyone. I am a mom to a 8.5 mo old boy who has projectile spit up from birth. The pediatrician dismissed it when he was younger saying he’d grow out of it, but he is still spitting up A TON after every feeding, sometimes as many as 10x/feeding and ~4 oz. Now that my son is eating solids, those come up too! We have tried baby Pepcid, but that didnt work, and we even went to a homeopathic doctor who tried phosphorus, which also did not work. It keeps us house bound a lot more than I’d like, and I am obviously nervous that he’s getting enough food. He was gaining weight at first regardless of the spitting up, but now his weight gain has significantly slowed. I keep hoping this issue will go away soon, but I dont want to count on that, as the issue has not yet improved. Any suggestions – I dont know where to start!!!

What is your son eating (type of formula, breastmilk, solids, etc.)? Does he seem to be in pain or uncomfortable? How are BMs? How is sleep?Hopefully we can help you!April 8, 2008 at 7:30 pm #50082AnonymousInactiveLike Sheri mentioned, MSPI can be a huge culprit. Landen was more of a “silent” refluxer, but SO bad he would choke and turn blue and was on an apnea monitor as a tiny baby. This all resolved when we got his MSPI (milk/soy protein intolerance) under control. We have him on an elemental formula as well.
Also, has your LO had any testing done? An upper GI can rule out things like Pyloric Stenosis, etc.April 8, 2008 at 8:15 pm #50085AnonymousInactiveI was also goign to ask about current meds, etc. Is he in pain from the reflux or what we call a happy spitter?
The protein intolerance sounds pretty likely as well. Some other common indicators would be mucousy/bloody/loose stools, eczema or rashes/lots of gas/trouble sleeping.April 8, 2008 at 8:17 pm #50086AnonymousInactiveI agree that it is possible that it is MSPI. WE didn’t have to do an elemental formula but we did have to do a hypoallergenic formula until he was 10.5 months old.

My son is a happy spitter – In fact, he will be laughing and the spit up will come out exorcist style 🙂 BMs are typically fine, although he tends towards constipation. We havent had any testing done as the doctor seemed hesitent to do anything with radiation exposure at this age. I currently breastfeed him, as I had heard from my pediatrician that formula would make it worse. He doesnt appear to be in any pain, but he choked on his vomit the other day and I actually had to pull the car over and take him out of the car seat. Scary.
