anyone know why my doctor would prescribe 7.5mg prevacid for 8.5 lb infant 6wks old?? we switched from zantac to prevacid.
March 29, 2009 at 8:16 pm #61870hellbenntKeymasterhttp://www.marci-kids.com is THE place to learn about PPI dosing in infants. They are at the FOREFRONT of research in this field! have you checked there? is this why you’re questioning the dose?
I would fist check the zantac dose- I discovered that most peds underdose zantac (and, well, everything else too!)the maximum dose for weight is 10mgs per kilo- don’t just take my word on it! research all you can! you’ve surfed on in to a fabulous place to research so that you can arm yourself w/ knowledge to be the best advocate you can be for your baby!KEEP on with the zantac! give it 4 hrs seperate from the prevacid. please listen to me! it can take up to 14 days for you to see the effects of the prevacid IF it’s the PROPER DOSE and PROPER FORM and if it’s ADMINISTERED PROPERLY, so until then it’s as if baby isn’t on ANY MEDS AT ALL!!!!my computer keeps crashing, so I can’t get to GROUPIE INTRO but this is a post that WILL HELP YOU. go to the top of this page, click on ‘Introduce youself!’ and then look at the top for the link called GROUPIE INTRO. it’s loooong, but skim/scroll/read through and refer back to it!look for PREVACID 101 link to read all about WHAT dose, WHAT form and HOW to administer…so glad you found us!~lauraps: anyone reading this if you don’t ‘see’ me around it’s my #*&$*#($&computer! dh claims he can fix it. ummm…so I’ll keep trying in between it crashing on me, grrr….March 29, 2009 at 8:25 pm #61874AnonymousInactiveShe is only taking prevacid once a day and no zantac at all. We only had one dose left of zantac and it was given the same day we started prevacid. It was an ENT specialist who started us on prevacid. We are a mess because she is squirming all the time now. She only breastfeeds about half the time she usally does (now only 4 mins) and then pulls off and bobs her head back and forth. Just looks miserable and cries and screams. We are at a loss and feel it is really reflux but not sure we are on the right dose. The prevacid website recommended <30kg to take 15 mg/day. She is only tking 7.5. Any thoughts?
March 29, 2009 at 8:31 pm #61877hellbenntKeymasteryep. get some more zantac to cover her until the prevacid kicks in and then give her the 7.5 2x a day. then FAX YOUR DOCTOR to TELL THAT YOU NEED THIS DOSE INCREASE. TELL do not ask.
March 29, 2009 at 8:41 pm #61881AnonymousInactivesince she went 4 days without zantac will it still work or will it take days to get back into her system to take effect? I don’t know what else to do. my mom is telling me to try formula for a couple days instead of breastmilk to see if that makes a difference but I am so afraid to do that. I hate to. I really feel it is reflux and not my breastmilk. I want to cure my baby… it is killing me.
March 29, 2009 at 8:45 pm #61884hellbenntKeymasterKEEP BREASTFEEDING! (that’s what you want to do!)
IF it’s something in your milk, you can figure that out AFTER you get the meds straight! first things first…really, it’s all in GROUPIE INTRO, lol!
zantac should be fine right away- I would give the MAX dose of 10mgs per kilo. again, don’t just listen to me, check out GROUPIE INTRO and the link from there, PREVACID 101- there’s a link from there about HOW I found out the zantac dose (spoke with a pharmacist, LOL)!
hang in there!ps: switching to formula for a few days is a myth: it takes TWO WEEKS for any change with all of this stuff! two weeks to see if formula works, two weeks to see if PROPER prevacid works, two weeks to change your diet to see if it is a protein in you milk…so please don’t stress about switching to formula if you don’t want to , because you can change your milk to BE LIKE FORMULA– read GROUPIE INTROhellbennt2009-03-29 20:47:44
March 29, 2009 at 9:17 pm #61888AnonymousInactiveThanks so much! I just finished reading through a good part of groupie info. Wow how much detail. That is amazing. I am just so frustrated… We thought it was unexplainable colic… then we started to really feel it was reflux. I swear everyday I have been playing that… “I think it is…. this” game. It is like each day I am wondering if it is something new. Maybe overactive letdown, but I don’t get engorged too often, sometimes. Maybe the dairy, maybe the reflux, maybe just tired.. etc. I can’t seem to wait this out to see if it end when the typical reflux ends. I just want to figure it out. I have been keeping track the past 2 days of what I eat, how long she eats and how she responds. My husband and I are both exhausted and feel so bad for her.
March 29, 2009 at 9:25 pm #61889hellbenntKeymasterIF it’s something in your diet, it takes a while to build up (the offending proteins I mean), so while it’s not alltogether ‘worthless’ to track your diet, it won’t help IF it’s something ‘major’ like milk or soy (the main culprits- others have found more but let’s not go there yet!) because those take 2 or even 3 weeks to clear out of your milk. now, if it’s something like citrus or broccoli well fine, take note, but in the general BIG picture, the ‘biggies’ won’t ‘just’ result in a reaction after eating it..example: you eat roasted eggplant at 10:00 a.m. then it takes a good 3-5 hrs for that to get into your milk, so you feed baby let’s say at 2:00pm and then after that feeding baby is way more distressed than usual, well, ok maybe it was the eggplant. take note and try again. if it happens again then don’t eat anymore eggplant, lol! but for milk or soy or wheat or nuts or rice or anything ‘major’ you can’t really do that kind of ‘test’ – so that’s when the TED (total elimination diet) comes in…I did it (it’s in groupie intro, LOL).
BUT I really would go through meds first…but it’s up to you. I was desperate, so I know how you feel!March 30, 2009 at 1:42 pm #61898AnonymousInactiveI second Laura’s suggestion… try getting the meds lined up before you try other “fixes.” If you try too many things at once, you won’t know what’s helping and what isn’t. I know it’s frustrating and you want her to feel better NOW. Hang in there. Push for a better medication dose and once you know she is getting the best meds she can, then you can try working the diet if she is still uncomfortable.
March 30, 2009 at 5:13 pm #61901AnonymousInactiveOkay our doctor changed the dose to 7.5mg twice per day instead of once per day. Then we also have the zantac again so it will help tie her over until the prevacid kicks in. I hope this helps!!
March 30, 2009 at 5:50 pm #61903AnonymousInactivegood… just make sure you space the Zantac at least 4 hours away from a Prevacid dose. So maybe Prevacid in the am, Zantac in the afternoon, and the Prevacid again at night.
March 30, 2009 at 5:54 pm #61905AnonymousInactivecorrect me if I am wrong, but you don’t need to feel breast engorgement to have overactive letdown? IIt seem to have it, but never really feel engorgement and don’t leak at all..just have the tell tale green frothy poos. do know feeding on just one breast for the night feeds and and early morning ones has stopped the behaviour you descrive.
I agree with all the other mums, get the meds right and then look at diet if need be. -
