Hi Everyone,
My dd is a former 29 weeker who is now 7.5 m corrected age. We have been dealing with her reflux since she was discharged from the NICU. She also has a milk protein intolerance and eczema. We feed her 5 oz. Nutramigen/ 4 times/day. She also get solids 3times/day (1 tub of stage 2 fruit or veggie mixed with a little oatmeal or rice cereal). She is on Ranitidine. 1mL, 2xday. She no longer screams and refuses to eat like she did when she first came home. However, she recently began arching her back and doing pelvic thrusts when we feed her her bottle. Not sure if this is due to her reflux or just some weird quirk of hers? She spits up constantly, but has always had good weight gain. We saw a ped GI specialist 2 months ago and she didn’t want to change a thing.I am wondering if prevacid might help her more. Also wondering if an amino acid formula may help more since Nutramigen still contains milk.We have tried adding rice cereal to her formula. Did not help. We have tried smaller feedings. Did not help. We are so sick of the mess and smell.Any thoughts or suggestions?TIA,TaraMay 28, 2008 at 6:13 pm #51836hellbenntKeymasterranitidine is zantac, no? zantac is very weight sensitive.
I’d figure out the dose for her weight…May 28, 2008 at 8:39 pm #51840AnonymousInactiveI think your gut instincts are right on. I was going to suggest asking about the Prevacid and also a formula change. The fact that she still has eczema even on the Nutramigen suggests to me that she is still reacting to those milk proteins. I would think that Elecare or Neocate would be a good thing to try.
One other thing… teething can really make reflux flare up, so if she is doing this that may be why it is getting worse all of a sudden. Also, my little guy really had a flare up right around the 7 month mark. Not sure why, but it got bad there for a bit. However, I really do think that investigating a new formula, at the very least, would a good idea.May 28, 2008 at 11:39 pm #51845AnonymousInactivelink for a free can of Neocate:
If you type in your e-mail and name and take a short quiz about your babies symptoms, they’ll send you a free can of Neocate. My ds has had no bottle feeding problems since we switched to Elecare (similar to Neocate).Solids are a different story as he cannot tolerate them right now. Some babies with intolerances are very sensitive and solids are hard on their systems. Make sure that the cereals you are using are soy-free if you suspect intolerance. Gerber cereals have soy. Earth’s Best and Beechnut are soy-free. Here are some allergen-free baby foods that I found. http://www.happybabyfood.comIf you really do want to thicken feeds, try something like Simply Thick. It is a gel that you can add to liquids to thicken without changing the liquids’ flavor. Hospitals and nursing homes use it. You can get it online, but check ebay for better prices. Simply Thick can also be purchased from the CVS and Walgreens pharmacies. http://www.simplythick.comGood luck!kdub2008-05-28 23:40:28

My daughter is 3 mths old. SHe has been on Prevacid since 5 weeks, the Axid which is like Zantac did nothing. She also still had blood in her stool from the Nutramagin and is on Neocate. Both made a big difference. I would suggest checking her stool at the doctors, My son was able to tolerate Alimentum and Zantac. I do put rice in the bottle to thicken the Neocate and she does okay with it. There is something I read on this site sbout SImply Thick which thickens the formula and is suppose to be good for these sensitive babies. I am sure others will have great things to add, this site is a lifesaver.KarenAva 2/26/08 Prevacid 15mg/NeocateTyler 3/20/02May 29, 2008 at 10:26 am #51854AnonymousInactiveHi!
I agree with everyone else on trying Elecare or Neocate and a PPI drug. It sounds like there is still a lot of room for improvement. You’ve got nothing to lose and a happy baby to gain by giving it a shot!!Good luck!!hang in there!!jilly782008-05-29 10:27:00
May 29, 2008 at 11:40 pm #51905AnonymousInactiveThanks for all your replies.
I will try the Neocate. Thank you to the person who gave me that link. I will also look into getting the Happybaby cereals. I didn’t even think to check the cereals for soy or dairy. Yes, I’ve been feeding her Gerber. I will also check intot he Simply Thick. I will contact her dr to see if we can switch to prevacid.I’m so glad I found this site. If anyone else has any suggestions…I’m all ears. Anyone else see their child do the arching/pelvic thrusts without seeming in discomfort? Just wondering if you all thought this could be from her reflux? Thanks again,TaraMay 30, 2008 at 1:56 pm #51930AnonymousInactiveWe had the same problem. Our son is 8.5 months and his reflux was getting better with Zantac but started getting increasingly worse again. We determined independently and confirmed when we saw our GI doctor that his zantac dose was too low since he had gained a few pounds. He is now taking 2 ml twice a day and it helped immediately. I’d much rather not use medications and we rely on alternative medicine as much as possible, but this seems to help keep the spitup to a tolerable level.
Best of luck,GregMay 30, 2008 at 2:18 pm #51934AnonymousInactiveZantac did nothing for us! We where on prevacid for about a month with no luck and we tried Nexium and finally had a happy baby. Putting cereal in Ashlynn’s bottle made her reflux worse and caused a alot of tummy issues. Hang in there!

So I spoke with dd’s pediatrician yesterday. She said trying Neocate would be a step backward and she’s concerned dd would develop diarhea or refuse to eat because of the taste. So she recommends sticking with the Nutramigen.
I switched dd to the RTF (we had been giving her the powder) and her eczema went away. She just has a few very small rough patches left on her arms and legs. So I am thinking since she seems to tolerate the RTF much better I am okay with not trying Neocate at this time.
She upped her dosage of Zantac from 2mL a day to 3mL a day. Hopefully that will help with the little discomfort she seemed to be having.
I have also started using the Happy Bellies cereal instead of Gerber. I am hoping the probiotics in the cereal and the fact that it is allergen free will help. I have also taken away all fruits and veggies and am watching very closely as I reintroduce them to see if she reacts. I could never really tell before because it seemed like she always had a rash around her mouth (probably due to the powder Nutramigen). So now that it has cleard up I should be able to better identify if any of the foods are causing a reaction. So far we know pears, apples, green beans and sweet potatoes are fine.
I don’t expect that these changes will help much with her spitting-up. I am hoping it will get better as she starts to stand/walk. I know some of you stated your child’s spitting got worse around 7-9m when they were crawling. It seems there is no rhyme or reason to her spitting. Yesterday she only spit up once from 7am-4pm (most of this time spent crawling, rolling and sleeping). But then she spit-up 6 times from 4pm-6:30pm (most of this time sitting up in stroller, high chair, or floor). Then this morning she spit-up 4 times from 7:30am-9am. So very sporadic. Thanks for all your help. I am so glad I found this board for advice, support and encouragement.June 3, 2008 at 3:42 pm #52161AnonymousInactiveI agree with you ped. I woud; switch formulas either. IF you happen to do that you would have to go to Elecare. That is the next step forward in formulas. Going to Neocate woudl be going backwards.
I hope the changes work soon for you.BTW some children who have MSPI react to simply think. There is also a thickener called Thick It….so you can try that on enext it the first done’s twork. -
