Cole’s 6 month immunizations r due this month. I’m hesitant to bring him because I know that shots can make babies fussy and not want to feed. We don’t need anything else that would cause him not to feed at this point. Any thoughts on this? I’ll probably wait till the end of the month, hopefully we can get his pain under control by then…
March 21, 2008 at 2:15 pm #49225AnonymousInactiveUgh… yes, i totally sympathize. Ben is 18 months and had his check up yesterday, and today he has been a total BEAR!
I think you are justified in waiting a few weeks, and when you do go, I would dose him with Tylenol before the shots are given and then maybe even give him Tylenol for the next 24 hours, just to help with the pain, etc.March 21, 2008 at 5:29 pm #49233AnonymousInactiveThanks for the tip, Claire. I’m going to wait till the last week of his 6 months, lol. Delay it as much as I can, hopefully he will be feeding easier by then.
March 21, 2008 at 6:53 pm #49236AnonymousInactiveLuckily Cooper never had any big fussy issues with shots, But I will say that I always give him Tylenol before his shots and would give it after if needed. All babies are different I hope he does well.
March 21, 2008 at 8:58 pm #49240AnonymousInactiveShane used to not eat for 24 hours after his shots… and i know another reflux baby who does the same thing… and spits up more afterwards as well.
i would wait a bit till he gets things under control…shane is about a year behind! but we will start catching him up next month..now that things are much better.March 22, 2008 at 12:56 am #49252AnonymousInactiveholy cow, not eat for 24 hrs, i would have a coronary! yes, i think i will wait till the last week of his 6 months. i pray that things calm down at least a little. thanks.
i’ll use the Tylenol too.March 23, 2008 at 7:38 pm #49274AnonymousInactiveYes, I would say to wait it out too until he’s eating better. A good % of your immune system is in your gut…reflux babies often have a time dealing with vaxes bc there immune system can be lowered due to other gastro issues….waiting til their immune system is more developed can actually be beneficial. 🙂
March 23, 2008 at 11:43 pm #49279AnonymousInactivethanks for the tip on lowered immune system. i thought that he would be under control by then, but seems that he is getting worse everyday.
March 28, 2008 at 2:09 pm #49513AnonymousInactiveAnd another tip, NEVER have your child vaccinated while they are sick with a cold, flu or other type of infection/illness. If their immune system is busy fighting an infection, it might not be able to respond to the vaccination properly. Always wait until they are healthy, even if that means postponing the vaccination by a couple weeks, months, etc.
March 28, 2008 at 9:22 pm #49547AnonymousInactiveyes, we learned early on with Landen that he just couldn’t handle vax’s well with the reflux. Like Shane, he is waaaay behind in vax’s, but he’ll get caught up eventually.
March 29, 2008 at 11:46 am #49568AnonymousInactiveI’m so glad to see this thread!!!
Xavier was hugely behind on his vax’s because he was 4 months when we first were struggling to get his reflux under control and there was no way I was going to add something else to the mix since his eating was so terrible. Unfortunately his pedi didn’t like that and had us come in at 6 months and then again at 7 months to get him “caught up”. Xavier also gets monthly Synagis shots, so for two months in a row he had his immunizations PLUS his Synagis…I just wanted to crawl in a hole.
I’d hold off, too…IMO it’s better to get his reflux under control and get his feeding back up so his body’s more able to deal with the vaccines than to pummle him with one thing after another right now.Good luck to you!!March 29, 2008 at 6:32 pm #49586AnonymousInactivethanks to all the Moms for chiming in. i’m not going to get his 6 months shots. it’s scheduled for 2 days before he turns 7 months, but as of now, he is not doing well.
Cole is only eating 15-17oz/24 hours. i can’t get him to sleep feed either, he refuses and cries. he wakes on his own, crying on and off, then i can get him to take 1-2oz usually. during the day he eats 1-2oz, takes him 30min-1 hour. i usu. switch from the bottle to sippy to regular cup and just keep trying to get him to take a few sips for an hour. very tiring, i’m sure that u all know…thanks for the advice. i don’t need him to eat any less than he already is. i really hope that the Neocate helps. he has been on it for 1 week.April 12, 2008 at 2:25 pm #50248AnonymousInactiveI agree with the other mommies. I would also like to say when you do start back up do not be pressured into trying to get them done all at once. Just go back onto the normal schedule. There was a little girl in the news recently that was behind on her vaxes and they did nine I think all at once and she is now autistic. She is also the first case that has gone to court and won saying she was damaged from the vaccines. You are the mom and you have the say so. So, don’t allow the dr. to say, ” well she needs all these right now”. There are many moms that wait until the baby is a year and many that don’t do them at all.
April 12, 2008 at 7:00 pm #50252AnonymousInactiveAgreed. We do our shots on a schedule that is very similar to the one that is in The Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears. We space the vaccines out more and break them up (no combo vaccines). I just take the kids to the county Health Department, b/c my peds office only has the combo shots. And it’s easier to take the kiddos to the health dept b/c I don’t have to make an appointment like I do for the peds office. The shots are $15 each. I just get a receipt for them, so I can turn it into the insurance company for reinbursement.
I would probably not do vaccines at all, except where I live we have a large migrant population. There is always an outbreak of something going on here.Shots actually make my kids sleepy. They take great naps afterwards. -
