I’ve recently found this wonderful forum, and I’m hoping I can get some help. My baby has been a “happy spitter” from day one. She spat up ALL the time, and a lot more than what’s consider “normal”. Eventually, it started getting painful with her feeds. She’d take an ounce or two and then start crying inconsolably. We took her to the doctor who prescribed zantac. She was on zantac for a month, but it hardly did anything for her. Now, not only did she still have the same problem, her appetite decreased.She was on Enfamil A+ up until a couple of weeks ago, when we finally decided to try a few others. We tried Enfamil thickened (AR), mixed with her normal formula (half and half), but it resulted in painful bowel movements. She was still pooping everyday, but she’d cry every time she had a bowel movement. Scratch that. We were back to Enfamil A+. A week later, we thought let’s try Enfamil Gentlease. It’s supposed to digest faster so it doesn’t stay in the tummy for too long. With that, the feeds became easier in the beginning, but she started spitting up even more. From the time she’d feed up until her next feed, she spits up which progressilvely gets clearer.
The doctor has prescribed Prilosec, which we haven’t tried yet. We thought if Gentlease worked, we’d avoid medication if possible. Last feed, we had the same story. She had 2 ounces and started crying refusing to eat. Now I’m thinking we should start on the med.
We’ve tried everything, from keeping her upright for 20-30 min after feeds, to raising the head of her mattress, to feeding smaller amounts frequently. Her appetite seems to be of a newborn on most days. She’ll be fine for 2 days (28 ounces in 24 hours), and then go back to 21-25, which is very low at this stage. She’s slowly coming down on her growth chart, which has us really worried.
Could this be a milk allergy or lactose intolerance?

Keymastermost likely milk protein intolerance or milk allergy or
MSPI= milk/soy protein intolerance/allergyOR it’s not diet related (but sounds like it is) and it’s ‘just’ an immature esophogeal sphinctor…I have a LOT to say & (most of) it’s here:

March 10, 2009 at 10:22 pm #61524Inactivei dont think 21-25 is low for her age? my daughter gets about 24.. sometimes even 20..the doctor doesnt seem concerned and she is 3 mos old.
how many bottles does she get a day at how many ounces. ?i would try her on alimentum or nutramigen .. if you dont want to go the med route.. and see if that helps first.. then do the meds. my daughter had pooping issues on both dairy and soy formulas.March 11, 2009 at 11:17 am #61530InactiveSorry to hear of the trouble (similar issues with my little guy). My ENT told me that the newest research show that raising the head of the crib up is not as beneficial as originally thought. Our little guy sleeps in his swing in his bedroom. It has the tray that locks in place. We have it lined with a soft blanket that we semi-bundle him in then lock the tray in place. It was a huge difference. My now 3 y/o (who also had reflux) slept her first 6 months in her car seat in her crib.
Hope this helps.March 12, 2009 at 1:04 pm #61560InactiveI have a 4.5 month old and he eats no more than 24ozs a day. He takes 4-5ozs every 4 hours or so. I don’t think 21-25ozs is bad. How much does your LO weight?
March 13, 2009 at 2:25 pm #61604InactiveThanks for your replies everyone. We started her on losec on Wednesday, and things seem to have gotten worse. Her crying/screaming episodes seem to have increased, and her appetite has decreased (about 22 ounces yesterday). I don’t know if it’s just a ‘bad cycle’ or if it’s losec causing it. I feel so frustrated and depressed. It’s like there’s no hope. I keep reading about babies suffering from this for over a year, and I feel like I’m going to have a nervous breakdown if it lasts more than a couple more weeks.

Shanesmom, she used to be on a perfect 3-hour schedule. Ever since she hit the 3-month mark, it all got screwed up. Nowadays, she’ll have anywhere between 2 to 4 ounces per feed. Some days after a 2 ounce feed, she’ll want more within 2 hours. On other days, she’ll refuse to feed for 4 hours. The number of feeds completely depends on how much she’s willing to take. On good days, she’ll have 3.5 to 4 ounces, every three hours. She’ll have about 6 – 7 feeds. Most days we actually set an alarm clock to wake up a couple of times at night to feed her because she refuses to eat during the day. Some nights she STILL won’t eat more than 2 ounces. It frustrates me even more cuz we keep disrupting our sleep hoping to feed her, and she refuses even in her sleep.
mumsuz, we usually put her in a rocker during the day, and she seems ok. We didn’t have much trouble with her sleeping until last week. It used to take minutes for her to fall asleep on her own. Nowadays, she cries every time we put her down. It takes 1 to 2 hours for her to fall asleep.

March 13, 2009 at 2:29 pm #61605Inactivehmm that is like sienna.. i find that i need to hold her off as long as possible.. and she will end up drinking between 4 and 5 ounces.. if she gets the bottle too soon..she will only want 2 or 3.. then an hour later more..
March 13, 2009 at 8:21 pm #61614InactiveHmmm.. I would say 2-3 ozs at one time is to little. I would do what shanes mom says and try to hold her off. That also works well for us but it doesn’t always work out that way. I have also added oatmeal to 2 of his bottles- morning and evening he has gained 9 ozs in 5 days. I would also get her on a PPI that has been a life saver for us but it does take awhile to kick in and things got worse before they got better. We were using simply thick and still are but we are slowly weaning him off that since his swallow study showed no penitration.
March 18, 2009 at 3:46 pm #61718Inactiveshanesmom, I held her off until she actually asked for it today, and she actually took 3 ounces without a fight. Last few days, it was a struggle to even get her to take 3 ounces. She’d hit the bottle with her hands and push it away. She’d also turn her face away from the bottle and start crying if she was forced. So far, I’ve had 2 good feeds today. I could tell she wanted more, but I thought I’d take it slow, in case she starts refluxing again and gets scared of the bottle again.
c5afwife, I know, it’s so little! I’ve been worried sick for the past few weeks, especially since we started her on losec last week. Her appetite had reduced even more — with 18-21 ounces in 24 hours. Even the times I held off on her feeds, she’d happily go without asking for it. The worst bit is… she is never hungry in the morning. Until about 3.5 months, she used to be starving in the morning. Now, she wakes up and doesn’t eat until an hour or an hour and a half. She’s the same with naps. She will not eat right after a nap.
March 18, 2009 at 4:12 pm #61719InactiveGrant is the same way he won’t eat in the morning if he gets upat 6am he won’t eat til 7:30(pushing it) to 8am. Do you have a good GI doc? Has she had any procedures done?
March 18, 2009 at 11:13 pm #61728InactiveWell, so far we’d been going to our family doctor. She’s been great! She’s referred us to a ped who also runs the breastfeeding clinic. Even though I’m not breastfeeding, she thought the ped might be able to help a bit more with feeding issues. Plus, where I am, it’s very difficult to get an appointment with a GI doc unless you have a referral through a ped. Next week we see the ped, and then we’ll take it from there.
We’re seeing some improvement today. She hasn’t cried with a feed all day today. She fed without too much fight, but she pushes the bottle away once she’s had 3 ounces.
