Hi Ladies,
This post is all over the place, so bear with me!1. We were supposed to have DD’s upper GI today. (She’s 14 months old). Well, she completely melted down and would not cooperate. Not only would she not drink the liquid they provide, she would not calm down. She was terrified of the machine. It was stressful, and we didn’t get the image. I have a call in to the pedi gastro to find out what we do now. I’m wondering if it’s worth trying again or using sedation. I am not sure I want to do that to her. Does anyone have any tips on how to get through this procedure with a baby or toddler?2. On a different note, I’ve been thinking about how to handle DD’s possible milk protein intolerance. I don’t think she’s truly allergic, just intolerant of the protein. Her only symptom right now is reflux that is controlled by prevacid. She had many months of respiratory symptoms and ear infections, but ear tubes have fixed that. (We didn’t know at the time that MSPI and ear infections/respiratory were linked). If we decide to cut out only straight milk (which seems to be the major culprit), would I be putting her in harm’s way? She loves cottage cheese and seems unaffected by it. In the past, the only thing she seems to have reacted to is straight milk as a drink.3. I forgot to mention in my previous posts something that my pedi GI said to me during our initial appt. She asked me whether DD was “a c-section baby.” I said yes, because she was breech. The doc said she wasn’t surprised because C-sec babies are more prone to food allergies because they don’t get the “vaginal flora” upon delivery. This statement by the doc sent me over the edge. For some reason it just made me feel like a horrible mom, even though I know that is not what the doc was implying. I am just wondering if anyone has any info about this. I thought I was the one who suffered from the c-section and didn’t realize it could have possibly harmed my baby! My son who is 28-months-old was a vaginal delivery and he has no issues of course.ShanJune 30, 2009 at 4:36 pm #63134AnonymousInactiveWell, it could be true, but if you needed a C-section to have a baby without other issues, then you needed a C-section!!!!! NO GUILT! You can’t feel guilty unless you intentionally do something, and you have not done anything. Also, there are both Csection babies and Vaginal birth babies here. I do believe teh flora thing, but you can do probiotics and put some good bacterial right back in, so no worries! Sorry I am in a hurry, but hate to see anyone feel guilty for something they didn’t cause… I will be back later…
Hang in there!June 30, 2009 at 6:12 pm #63135AnonymousInactiveI would think that if she tolerates and is fine(no other symptoms) w/hidden diary then it wouldn’t hurt. It’s a good question. My 17 month old doesn’t do well w/straight milk, but she seems to tolerate hidden dairy just fine. Maybe someone else has better experience…
As far as the c-section thing goes…Both of mine were vaginal and they BOTH had issues. My DD being the worst. So, I don’t think it’s necessarily 100% certainty that b/c you had a c section, you’re now dealing w/a food allergic/intolerant baby. Absolutely NOT your fault!!!June 30, 2009 at 9:07 pm #63139hellbenntKeymasterNOT your fault! I’ve been here for six years now (yikes! lol!)
and there have been babies with ALL KINDS of ‘backgrounds’ with reflux.jonah was vaginal birth & severe GERD and Ari was also vaginal birth w/ no GERD…as for MSPI issues, maybe try probiotics and enzymes? there are those that really have found them to be helpful! this link I’m giving you is a link to a WORK IN PROGRESS, lol, so it’s LONG but there is a ‘section’ about enzymes and probiotics:Erin’s sticky: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12948&PID=105126#105126
you most certainly can keep her off of milk as long as she gets calcium from other sources! if she can tolerate cheese and yogurt, etc, then she should be fine…if not there are posts as to what to give to MSPI toddersJune 30, 2009 at 9:24 pm #63141AnonymousInactiveC-sections are not the mothers fault! I had one (very large baby!) and he did have reflux, MSPI and is now allergic to eggs, my SIL had one (very large baby!) and she didn’t have reflux or any type of food allergies. I think all babies are different and I also really think heredity plays a huge role esp if MSPI is involved. Our ped GI told us that with a 2nd child we have a 50% chance of reflux again which means MSPI for us. Please don’t feel bad b/c you had a c-section.
