Hi there we are new here and so glad we finally found you! I have an 18 month old who was dx w silent reflux at 3months and took prevacid until 6 months was fone thereafter. Second baby dx w reflux at 2 weeks and later mspi. This one has been challenging. Started off BF but stopped and tried nutramigen which was a total fail. Now on neocate 10 days and I will give it a lil bit longer. First two bottles she spit up a lot and had painful reflux although on omeprazole 2.5ml 2xs a day compoundes biweekly. So I started adding oatmeal and even tried rice but has been having terrible gas which flares her reflux!! I bought gelmix but it seems that’s producing gas as well. Is the neocate the gas culprit or the things I’ve been adding?? Dr. Just rx nexium 10mg a day. Looks like not a lot of ppl here use nexium. Does this mean it doesn’t really work? What do you think should I just stick w neocate and add nothing and risk her having painful spit ups and give nexium and hope that helps the pain? Should I wait the two week mark and then switch to elecare or puramino and see of those are better. It seems gas is the biggeat problem so that’s why I stopped the compounded omeprazole bc of sodium bicarb. Im in over my head

Thank you so much Laura. I’m so happy to be here and see theres ppl like you who are willibg to help aside from being a busy mom I’m sure. I decided today no more thickening and I think it’s already helping het lil tunmy! I found nexium dosing on the fb files so imw dosing at that. So I will stixk to neocate a lil longer and pray for the best! I’ve been reading a lot. I hope nexium works if not I’ll have to start making my own stuff or somehow convice my pedi to rx zeregid. He didn’t even know nexium could be rx for kids until I told him and he confirmed with fellow GI specialists! He was very nice and said he

learned something new! Geez and lol. I bet he has no clue of zeregid either. I’ll have to print stuff from here for him and educate him!

I too am glad you found this site!! WELCOME!! It is truly lovely to know that you are not alone when it comes to a crying baby. A few years ago, I didn’t even have internet. Now I have not a clue what I’d do without it! It is SOOO helpful. And I hate to say it… but sometimes a lot more informative than a doctor!

Happy Mom I agree I find this site much more helpful then my pedi. Pretty pathetic. I actually found your blog online before joining in here. Very interesting. I’m adding probiotics to my dds formula but don’t know if working. I wanna try the ones you recommended but scared. The first probiotics I tried made her so gassy she was screaming in pain..not crying but screaming!!! The ones I use now Florastor have given her no gas.

On another note. It’s been 18 days on neocate. Ever since starting this formula there has been crazy gas and sometimes crazy loud stools but when I open diaper there’s almost nothing there. Constipation??? She strains and is very uncomfortable before and after pooping. The gas wakes n keeps her up! This is also flaring her reflux :(. I’m sick of seeing her in pain. So my ? is..is it time to change to Elecare or Puramino?? I’m so done w this. I go back to work Tuesday and so sad I’m leaving her knowing she’s in pain.

Sadly it is common for probiotics (and enzymes also) to cause gas. It is temporary but can be very hard to get through that time. Have you read my page on my blog about the side effects of probiotics and enzymes? http://help4acidreflux.wordpress.com/side-effects-of-probiotics-and-enzymes/

I don’t blame you though for being scared to try them again. No one wants to make a miserable baby more miserable. 🙁

If you do ever decide to try the Digestive Health like we use, start very very slowly with it. Like…. just 1/4 a pill a day. And every several days, you can add in another 1/4 until they help make your baby start feeling better.

If you are satisfied with the Florastor you are using, you could try adding in a supplement of just digestive enzymes. Digestive Health contains both probiotics and enzymes but it contains 13 strains of probiotics versus Florastor only has one. Of course the more strains there are, the more they will probably help but also I assume (don’t really know for sure though) that the more strains there are, the higher the chance of having more of those temporary side effects.

By giving your little one digestive enzymes it could possibly help with digesting her food better and alleviate some constipation and pain.

I don’t really know of what kind of enzyme product to recommend as I personally have never tried anything else other than Digestive Health. But here is a story of a mom that found Digestive Health to help her little one a lot and then later found a local store that carried a different brand of probiotics and enzymes sold seperately and she felt they helped just as much as the Digestive Health. I think she has a link to the place where she got them and you can order them from their store. They may be more expensive than the Digestive Health but at least you could try the enzymes without all the probiotics at first and then later add in the probiotics if you wanted to. https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15293

Wow wow wow!! This makes me really hopeful! I read that other success story and the funny thing is I’m a Chicago native who now lives 3hrs away. My friend used to work for Karyn! Haha! How weird is that. I wonder if I ordered from her shipment would be faster??? Definately going to look into getting both enzymes and probiotics w more strains. I forgot to mention we have an appointment w a naturapth on Friday 6 hrs hrs away from here but I’ve heard wonders from her so it’s worth the drive! Wondering if I should wait for her input before urchasing anything else. Also out of desperation I bought Elecare and it was a total fail! She began to develop those small red pimple like rash in her face like she had before neocate so I switched back to neocate! What a disaster! Thanks so much for your input Martha.

You could probably call and ask how long it would take to get your order shipped to you and they could tell you.

That is too bad about the Elecare. 🙁

I have heard many good things about naturapaths. I hope you get some help from her. I don’t know what to say about waiting to try anything more. I think that a lot of naturopaths have their own line of products they recommend or sell. But I would think that most natropaths would feel that probiotics and enzymes are a good idea for digestive problems.

Hi Laura,

Well I completely stopped the meds per the naturapath we saw last Friday.

She started my lo on several enzymes, two metabolism boosters and a probiotic. She’s on the mixture four times a day. We are still on neocate. Now neocate is weird in that it constipates her but then gives her loose stools. First few days on enzymes she had loose stools I was told this is normal and will probably continue but now she seems constipated. So it’s confusing. I emailed the Doctor today to see if that’s normal. Waiting on response. She seems to still reflux and worse at evenings with pain. It’s only been 5 days on this stuff so I’m hoping it will get better. I must say that she has been sleeping well at night. Last night 8 hrs straight a record for her! Lol. With a 3hr nap in the morning I’m holding faith to this and will give it time.It’s been 5 weeks on neocate I wonder if I need to switch although Doctor said it is fine. I’m still a little skeptical this will work. I’ll keep updating. Thank you for asking!!

You’ll figure out what’s ‘normal ‘ & you just may find that her poop is fine. Now, painful gas, that’s different The probiotics & enzymes should help & also look on YouTube for baby massages to do for gas that you can do in the evenings.

Thanks guys. It seems she has loose stools and then not. So I guess that’s normal for her. Also it seems gas is a side effect of the enzymes and probiotics which I hope ends soon!!! I’ll give neocate a ring. Still waiting on doctor’s call!
