One of the symptoms that crops up when we need to increase her dosage is that she’ll stick her entire hand in her mouth in attempt to make herself throw up. This usually happens when she gets upset about something and she’ll start to cry. The crying quickly escalates to what we call a “reflux episode” where she’ll start to get extremely mucousy and then start to cough/gag. Then she’ll stick her hand down her throat to try to throw up (and sometimes she’s successful). If we try stopping her, she will get extremely aggressive by hitting and/or biting us. Eventually she’ll calm down (either by distraction) or she’ll exhaust herself to sleep. She did have an EGD done and that came back normal. We were unable to do a pH probe because her nasal cavities are too narrow to get the probe through. Both her GI doc and her pediatrician seem to think this is more behavioral and thinks we should just let our daughter throw up. We’ve tried that, but she doesn’t stop – she keeps sticking her hand down her throat and throwing up over and over. So, we don’t let her throw up, if we can help it. An increase in her reflux meds usually helps. Wish she can tell us what’s wrong (she has speech delays).Anyone else’s kiddos self-gag to induce vomiting?CindyJune 26, 2011 at 5:25 am #68572AnonymousInactive
Hello,
Our 20 month has almost the same situation as you are describing 🙁
We don’t know if it is totally behavior or true illness.
We do notice that keeping him calm and distracted with music does seem to help.
Dry foods seems to help as well.
We have not tried any re flux medicine as yet.
Overall the Dr’s cant seem to find anything wrong with him.
My question is, has your daughters situation improved?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Kindly,
Proud Mom N Dad

I’d like to say that my daughter’s self-gagging has improved, but it hasn’t really, other than she doesn’t so it as often as she used to. When she gets really upset, she can still get into “reflux mode” and has even thrown up without the self-gagging (she’s always been a silent refluxer). This week has been a bad week so I was thinking of contacting her doctor to see if we should up her reflux medication (Zantac) since it’s been quite a while since we’ve increased her dose.Yes, distraction is the biggest key to calm her down. Though, luckily now that she’s a bit older, she does calm down faster than when she was younger.Best of luck with your kiddo.CindyJuly 1, 2011 at 4:25 pm #68588AnonymousInactiveThank you Cindy,
We are working hard to keep him calm & his mind off things.
That so far seems to be the best medicine.
We count every day, without vomiting as a blessing.
I think he begins to “Cough” without realizing what he is doing.
So we just distract him again.
We hope your little girl gets better.
Kindly,
Mom N Dad
