I’m kind of in the same boat. I tried to do every other day last week. My DD did great during the day but she had trouble sleeping at night. It’s just so hard at this age because they really can’t tell us what’s going on. I don’t know, I’m starting to have mixed feelings about it. I’m now thinking of just letting her stay on Prevacid for now and try again in a few months. I never thought this would be so hard!
I would say if he is usually a good sleeper and without the Prevacid he’s waking up then it is probably the reflux. My ped also said do it cold turkey but I know better because I too have been on Prevacid (and then to Prilosec). You get really bad acid rebound if you quit cold turkey. What happens is when you take PPIs, your body compensates by making more acid (this is what my GI dr said too). The PPI is like a dam that prevents the water (analogy) from breaking out. Take the dam out and the water flows freely. So it’s best to do a slow wean. I know 3 yrs ago I stopped taking Prilosec cold turkey after being on it for 1.5 yrs! Oh my gosh it was so horrible, I could not eat or hardly drink anything it was like heartburn like you wouldn’t believe.
My DD is also 18 months old, she was born on 8/31/07.
