15mg tablets: cutting in half?

hi all,

this is my first post!

my 6mo daughter has been prescribed 7.5mg prevacid, and at the pharmacy i was given 15mg tablets and was told to just cut them in half at home. problems are, so much of the tablets fall away into powder when i cut them, i’m sure i’m breaking some of the time-release protective coating, and it’s nearly impossible to give her a perfectly accurate dose because i’m cutting them on my own.

any tips? are there better forms available that i could get at a different pharmacy? powders or liquids?

first of all I URGE you to go to http://www.marci-kids.com because

the dose of prevacid your baby is getting is a very LOW dose…they have a dosing calculator and lots of great explanations!

Just wanted to say welcome!

Laura sent you some good info. I’d start there. I also agree… sounds like her dose is very low.

I agree with Laura, but a few tips until you can see about a higher dose. First go get yourself a pill cutter, it will help with the cutting and not falling totally apart. 2nd make sure you cover the other 1/2 of the tab that you aren’t using with aluminum foil. It is light sensitive and will not be as effective if it is exposed to light for long periods of time. Good Luck.

as far as i know cutting the tablet is the only way. my DD just started prevacid with the same instructions. i use a very sharp knife on a plate and it splits pretty well. you can also get a pill cutter at the pharmacy that will work fine. good luck!
