My 11 mo dd chokes on all liquids unless they are thickened. She is on Elecare thickened with rice and oatmeal…and will be on this till 3yo. She is on few foods as she has many allergies. I want to give her a sippy cup with water or pear juice with meals BUT she chokes EVERY time. Anyone have ths experience? She is still on a stage 1 avent nipple. I am concerened that something is wrong. When she was 2 weeks old she choked and had to be hospitilized. We struggled to get her on a bottle nipple that she didnt choke with. I figuered at this age she would be better. Whatch think? At 2 weeks she did have swallow studies. She has had a recent upper and lower scope. I didnt mention the choking at the time becuz I was more concerened about her allergic reaction she was having (reason for the scope)……

Choking is a real risk, particulary if she aspirates fluid- this could lead to infections and the like. There may not be anything wrong, but ou sound worried and at least it would set your mind at ease. Goodluck.

Mine has silent aspiration (found through a swallow study) they were only testing because she was choking in between meals. They thought it was just reflux but decided to check just in case. She aspirates on thin liquid and we have to use “thick it”.
They still do not know the reason and I am trying to find any information I can before our appt with the speach therapist in June.
Thanks!

If none, then maybe the therapist will have some great ideas for Paige. I wonder if you will need to *ween* her off the thicker drink so she gets used to water/juice?? I hope the therapist gives you great advice!

She can only drink from a Nuby silicone sippy cup. The most recent swallow study showed that she isnt aspirating. They seem to think she will outgrow this. I sure hope so. She scares me. She chokes on food as well!!
Best of luck to you.

He was 8 weeks premature and was in the NICU for 1 month after he was born. He would always choke while I breast fed him, so I tried a bottle. He vomited everything as soon as I fed him. That was due to pyloric stenosis finally discovered at 2 months old. He had the repair, but due to the suspicion of reflux he still had to have his formula thickened. He is on 7.5 mg Prevacid morning and 15 mg night. We had to thicken his bottles of Neocate Formula with Beechnut cereal (soy and milk-free). He also has multiple food allergies. He cannot have any kind of juices, no fruits; besides bananas, and a couple of vegetables. No meats until 18 months, due to the reflux, and will be switched to Pepdite Jr Formula or EO28 Splash (doctor has not decided which yet). Tomorrow he has to go for a bronchoscope to figure out his breathing.
