Hello! It’s because of this wonderful forum that I was able to get my DD onto Prevacid in the first place! Thank you!
Brief history: DD had colitis when she was about 4 months old, which finally resolved when I went onto a TED (I had been doing a top 8 elim diet first). Now I am back onto most food except dairy, soy, nuts and corn. I brought up reflux to the ped when she was about 5 months old which was summarily dismissed. Then a couple of months later the ped heard about her arching and gave us some Axid. It helped for a few days at the most. They said nothing to us about putting her on something else if this did not work. Another month went by and we brought up her issues again and the ped said to put her back on the Axid – I said no, to put her on a PPI. They agreed and she has been on 7.5mg of the solutab once daily. It helped for about 5 or 6 days and took over a week to kick in. It relieved her (and us) of her nighttime screaming and being up for two hours unable to settle, but as of the past 5 days or so, she has been harder and harder to settle when she does wake. The total number of days she has been on the prevacid is 15 days.
Her recent symptoms have been poor sleep (which they say is due to the fact that we co-sleep – grrrrr!), waking every 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours all night long. Her naps went from lasting over 2 hours down to 20 minutes (no joke!) We are wiped – hence the scattered posting here – sorry if I’m rambling. Here are my questions:
* Since the prevacid took care of her waking up screaming and arching, should we assume that it has done the job even though she is now waking more frequently and is hard to settle coupled with horrible naps? Or could a higher dose soothe these less-intense symptoms?
* What do you think of my idea: increase her dose to 15 mg once daily in the afternoon/evening to start with and see how it goes. Then give her another 7.5mg in the AM (for a total of 22.5mg daily) if there’s no improvement. Thoughts?
* Should I reconsider another TED? It helped her colitis so much, and her sleeping was much better, but she wasn’t on any meds at that point, so I never felt like she hit “baseline” with regards to her sleeping – only with the colitis. Or should I wait to see what the prevacid does for her first?
* Most importantly, will it take another 7-10 days to see an improvement with an increased dose? Or, since she’s already on the drug, could we see a difference earlier?
Thank you so much! I felt so empowered to tell my ped that we needed a PPI and why – now I suppose I get to ask for a higher dosage….

Welcome! I too just found this board in the last week and I have learned so much already! Have you checked out the MARCI kids website? If not, head on over..there is so much information there http://www.marci-kids.com/index.htmlMy first thought w/o knowing how much your daughter weighs is that she needs more Prevacid. My 3month old is on 15mg/day and he’s only 13lbs. Since you already have the 15mg tablets, I would start giving the whole tablet…if you want to give half in the morning and the other have in the evening that would be OK too. It may take a few days to see the full effect of the increased dose. How long were you on the Axid for? It takes a good week or so to see the full effects of that also.I would think that getting her on the proper dose would help with the night wakings if they are due to acid reflux. How does she act when she does wake up?As for the TED, that is up to you. I am always leery of making too many changes at once b/c it is hard to know which one is working. How long has it been since you were last on the TED?June 2, 2008 at 2:19 pm #52065AnonymousInactiveAre you giving the solutabs at least 30 minutes before a full meal? That is necessary for them to work properly.
Also, I think a med increase is a good idea, and no, it shouldn’t take long for it to improve since she is already on the meds. The only other thought I have is that she is possibly reacting to something new in your or her diet? Any new foods lately? Could she be teething? That always made Ben’s reflux SO much worse.I agree that trying too many things at once isn’t helpful. So maybe try the med increase first.. get it up to what Marci kids suggests.. if after several days you don’t see an improvement, I would re-examine the diet.June 3, 2008 at 12:24 pm #52148AnonymousInactiveThank you – I needed some outside input because we are both going crazy over here trying to figure this out.
Her ped very grudgingly upped her dose to 3/4 of a tablet for the next two weeks. So, because we both felt she was being too conservative, thanks to the posts here and the eMedicine information, we put her on the full 15mg. Half in the morning and half at night. Yesterday was her first full day on it – she did pretty well last night, but I’m sure it was a coincidence. Oh, she’s almost 20#. We’ll give this dose about two weeks to see if it’s making any difference, and I guess we’ll bump her up another 1/4 to 1/2 a tablet if necessary. Thanks for the advice and the personal experience about doses, it really helped us feel better about upping her dose.
And yeah, I guess I knew I shouldn’t also start a TED again! Too many things all at once. We’re just so desperate for some relief that I am ready to jump off our deck if it means I can get some sleep!!
I also realized I wasn’t giving it to her 30 minutes before a meal, so we have been extra careful about that. No new foods recently.
Thank you again! We’ll see how she does over the next few days. I’ll post an update.

June 3, 2008 at 3:43 pm #52162AnonymousInactiveI may be wrong but…I htink the solutabs have traces of milk protein in them…I might be wrong. I would ask around and find out for aure. That coudl be the culprit right there.
June 3, 2008 at 6:25 pm #52167hellbenntKeymasterthe solutabs have some lactose. some babies react, but it’s not milk protein. no one seems to know if they react to the lactose or the aspertame or the other ingredients in there…

Thanks. I actually know a boy on another board whio react to them….he just can’t tolerate the trace amounts…:( But it is just very samll trace amounts.June 4, 2008 at 9:24 am #52194AnonymousInactiveHi Alis!
You may notice a difference when you start timing around meals (dose on an empty stomach- then feed 30-60 mins later). I think b/t that and the higher dose you might see lots of improvement. If no improvement after doing this for a week or 2, then def look at your diet, or the possiblity of the tiny amt of lactose bothering her. If that is the case, you could always switch to the prevacid capsules and put them on a little baby spoon of applesauce to get it down. A tiny bit of applesauce is ok since it is an acidic environment. Just make sure no meal until it’s been on an emtpy stomach at least 1/2 hr.HTH!jilly782008-06-04 09:25:08
