Hi everyone. Just needed to vent!!!! My 3 yr old has severe reflux. He started vomiting blood on Monday to which the doctor told me “don’t worry”. Then procedded to put him on reglan. Had just asked doc to take 7 mos old off reglan because of scary side effects that are possible. What did doc say? ” don’t worry the side effects are rare, and this med is very safe.” BUT he did take my 7 mos old off of it. When he put my 3 yr old on it I said ” I don’t like this med the side effects scare me” Doc says” Don’t worry” Well yesterday was day 4 of meds and my son was still vomiting, which correct me if I’m wrong, is scary for a mom to watch. They last night after my sons dinner time dose of reglan my son starts shaking, loses control of his tongue, starts drooling and looks and sounds like a person having a stroke!!! Suprise suprise all the #### side effects of reglan!!!!! We ended up in ER and they gave him Benedryl. I have to keep him on it for 48 hours because he can continue to have problems for that long! I am so angry with the doc I could kill him, but I am more angry with myself for not pushing harder about the medicine. I could just cry thinking about what my baby went through. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 24, 2006 at 1:55 pm #2357AnonymousInactiveThat is just horrible for him to go through and you too! Are you thinking about switching drs?
February 24, 2006 at 2:17 pm #2363AnonymousInactiveI agree re: switching docs…docs who put kids on reglan just to see if it will help really p*ss me off! It is a scary med which CAN help SOME kids with a definite need for it (diagnosed delayed gastric emptying), but it seems like some docs just try it on kids with reflux to see if it helps, but with the potential side effects that is just crazy. This practice was pretty common back in the “old days” when my first baby was diagnosed with reflux (9 years ago) but has REALLY fallen out of favor among pedi gi’s, so I’d try to find a new gi if you can.
February 24, 2006 at 2:29 pm #2364AnonymousInactiveour friend is a ped, fairly new one. When I told him Matthew had reflux he said ALL of his patients with moderate to severe reflux get reglan and zantac. I told him I wouldn’t do reglan because of the side effects, he told how “rare” it was. Another ped in our office gave me the same talk when Matt was still having issues at 8mths….he puts them all on reglan and “has never seen a reaction when it is dosed properly”. Don’t feel badly for not following your instincts. Docs are force feeding us reglan and how “safe” it is. We trust them and sometimes, they are just wrong.
Hope things are back to normal very soon for you.
February 25, 2006 at 2:02 am #2438AnonymousInactiveI agree with the bad side effects but my dd had diagnosed delayed gastric emptying. She was given the proper dose for her weight at the time & she had very slight side effects. She did some slight twitching. So, we lowered her dose ever so slightly & she did much better & no side effects. She was on Reglan from 4 weeks old until 9 months old. We had tried 3 different times to wean her before we were actually able to. She was not a spitter (silent reflux) but with her DGE she definitely needed it. When we would try to wean & were unsuccessful, she was actually so much worse off of it than on it.
Now, I am not saying I am a proponent for this med, but when used for the proper reasons with proper dosing, it can help alot. I hate it when docs prescribe it because “that is what they have always done”. That tells me that these docs don’t keep up with improvements in medical treatment for kids & it is probably time to get a new ped.
February 25, 2006 at 9:58 am #2450AnonymousInactiveIn your case, Sherry, I find it different because Ashtyn was diagnosed
with DGE and give the proper dose and monitored much better. But as you
said, so many doctors just throw kids on it without knowing if they
even have DGE and without really monitoring them – hence the problem.
You are right – those doctors are not on top of things.February 25, 2006 at 9:29 pm #2497AnonymousInactiveHow frustrating. I know you probably already know this, but you are not to blame for trusting your doctor. He is to blame for giving you bad advice and the wrong medication!! You expressed concerns and he should not have dismissed you.
