Thank you so much for the time and effort you have put in this website.
I am the mother of three boys – with my third son, Caleb Trey (born Feb. 18,
2003), having acid reflux. The night he was born my husband was feeding him
and he turned blue and stopped breathing. He rushed him out of the room and
to the nurse. They kept him in the nursery and monitored him, etc. The
next day they tried to feed him and the same thing happened. Caleb wouldn’t
spit it out, it would just get stuck in his throat. He was transferred to
Brenner’s Children Hospital. They of course ran lots of tests and finally
came up with acid reflux. He was a week old before he came home. They put
him on the Reglan (3 times a day) and the Enfamil AR (which is already
thickened). Despite his troubles, he was/is such a good baby. He of course
would be held lots during the day while he was at the hospital since I went
after I took the other two boys to school and would stay until late at
night. (Leaving him at the hospital was the hardest thing I had to do.)
When we finally got him home, when he would cry you could just hear the pain
that he was in. At his second visit to the doctor, we asked about Zantac.
He is on this twice a day and he still is taking the Reglan. I was using
the Playtex Nursers with Caleb when we got home, but he just didn’t seem
satisfied, screamed in pain, and always seemed to be hungry. The mylicone
drops didn’t seem to help much. I also had to help him with his BM’s with a
suppository and push his legs for him. My mom bought him the Playtex Vent
Aire bottle to try and that has helped him out a great deal. As of now he
is no longer on the Enfamil AR (he ended up with diarrhea) and is now on the
Enfamil Prosobee. I sometimes have to add some syrup but as of now he seems
to be doing fine. He still has gas, but he hasn’t screamed in pain too much
lately. I am very fortunate that he is sleeping all night long now, but
even before he wouldn’t wake but every 3-4 hours in the beginning. Day time
naps aren’t as long, unless being held, but 8 hours of night sleep is great
so I am not complaining!!!!
Thank you again for such a web site – this information is very helpful – and
tho children are different, it helps to learn and it never hurts to try
other things when all else has seemed to fail.
Sincerely,
Dena (North Carolina)
