Brian eats dry finger food (puff, cheerio, cracker and wafer) very good right now, he picks up and feeds himself without problem, but he will not pick up the wet finger food, if I use spoon to put wet finger food into his mouth, then he does not know how to chew and gag on it. I do not know why that is, does anyone have these experience with your little one?
February 6, 2006 at 10:13 pm #980hellbenntKeymasterhow about some cooked (steamed) fruit slices?
crush up some puff/cheerio/wafer and coat the fruit slice in the crumbs so it’s easier for him to pick up and handle…
February 7, 2006 at 6:03 am #992AnonymousInactiveyes! riley did this and at almost two is just starting to ‘come out’ of this. i tried everything, but finally just went with what he could handle. made bread with a million hidden veggies and fruits (he would pick that up and eat it, but not the cooked veggies/fruits alone), found dried fruits that he will eat well (‘just fruits and veggies’–you can find them at any health food store. they’re pretty expensive…about $6/2 oz, but i found it to be worth it so i could feel like riley was getting the veggies and fruits i wanted him to. mangoes, bananas, apples, peas…you name it, they’ve got it!). hang in there. you’d be surprised how much ingenuity you can display when finding what they’ll eat
February 7, 2006 at 9:45 am #1004AnonymousInactiveSame here – James would not touch anything wet, slimy, squishy, etc. Just give him things he will pick up himself – when you put it in their mouths they are sure to gag and barf.

Gina – Are those dry veggie and fruit difficult to chew? Did you feed Riley puree food when he only could handle dry finger food? I still feed Brian puree food since those dry finger food does not have enough nutrition in it.
Tricia – What did you do to help James get use to wet finger food?
Thank you.
February 7, 2006 at 7:38 pm #1065AnonymousInactivewe started with the mangoes, and those seemed to be pretty easy to chew (small pieces, dissolve pretty quickly in mouth). the bananas are definitely for older babies. the peas are really easy to eat and crumble easily in riley mouth. he had to get the hang of having all those little dry pieces in his mouth at first, since these don’t necessarily get soggy quickly like cheerios and puffs. that’s why i started with the fruit breads, ’cause he could handle those well. he caught on quickly to the dried and loves them still. yes, we fed him pureed baby foods and still do! he loves veggies, but not in their native form so we still feed him pureed beans, spinach, sweet pots, and anything else healthy he will eat. i figure it’s veggies and that’s all i care about. also, he loves the taste and hopefully one day won’t turn his nose up at a green bean once he tastes it and realizes it’s familiar. i used to be so worried/stressed/embarrassed by this (i’m goofy that way!) ’cause everyone else’s child his age seemed to handle ‘the real thing’, but now i don’t even bat an eyelash. a lot of the kids his age we hang around with don’t eat nearly as many veggies/fruits as he does, so i’m pretty pleased. also, if i think about it, i have particular ways i like my veggies and ways i won’t even conceive of eating them. he must get it from me
he’s still an immensely picky eater, but his scope is slowly widening. hang in there.
the above is the website for the dried veggies and fruits riley loves.
February 8, 2006 at 7:43 am #1093AnonymousInactiveGina – thank you for the information and web site. How do you make fruit bread? Brian is such a picky eater too, he hates sweet stuff, so he does not like any fruit, sweet potato, carrot, he likes pea, green bean and yellow squash.
