Ok, so the ear infection Aidan was diagnosed with on MEMORIAL day is not only still there but now his OTHER ear is infected…the amoxicillan is not working for him in the least bit as he has like 2 doses left and it should have cleared the infection up by now!!! So, today at his 6 month check up, he got put on Augmenton (which I hate) which is also the only thing (besides a z-pac) that works for my older son. My husband suffered horrible ear infections until he was ten..and still gets at least one a year, and aparently I got a good number of them when I was little too…I hope this is just a fluke and he isn’t plagued with these for a long time…although he doesn’t seem bothered by them (older one wasn’t either until he was about 4 or so) I hate him having one…(or 2) The Dr. also gave him his shots today even though he is on antibiotics..which kind of worries me, but I trust her..she’s really up to date on things (30 mgs of previcid since he was 2 months old)…man if it’s not one thing it’s another!!!! Also, I can’t find any fruit that Aidan can tolerate, his reflux even flares up on bananas!!!..oh well I’m glad that he is at least eating baby food…I swear this child is sick (cold cough etc) 2 weeks out of every month!!!!
June 8, 2006 at 11:52 am #9352AnonymousInactiveI hate ear infections too!!! Hailey now has a BRUTAL cold and I hope we don’t get an ear infection again this time but suspect that it may be unavoidable.
June 8, 2006 at 1:47 pm #9359AnonymousInactiveI hope Aidan and Hailey feel better soon. It’s so frustrating when they catch these things and you can’t do anything (but keep them in a bubble) to prevent it.
Jill, I’m curious, why don’t you like Augmenton?
June 8, 2006 at 2:35 pm #9363AnonymousInactiveSorry Aiden is having continued ear infections – I know what you mean
about Augmenten – it can be tough on the tummy. Hope he feels better
soon. And I hope Hailey avoids the ear infection this time!
June 8, 2006 at 8:24 pm #9382AnonymousInactiveahh well, I should have clarified, that’s what they have to give to Austin when he gets ear infections, strep throat, etc..and HE hates it, (I did just realize I can get it flavored and I think they are flavoring Aidan’s strawberry) I’m used to having to literally pry a kids mouth open to get him to take it!! (also yeah it is hard on the tummy) I guess I am kind of gearing myself up to have another kid who can’t stand it (I tasted it once with whatever the flavor is it comes in and I couldn’t believe how nasty it is!!!!)so it’s not the actual medicine I hate it’s the trying to get the kid to take it!!! Still puzzled as to why the amoxicilian didn’t work for Aidan..it’s the first time he’s had any antibiotics!
June 8, 2006 at 9:13 pm #9388hellbenntKeymasterwe went through a terrible ear infection/fluid in the ear that wouldnt’ go away/resistant to antibiotics spell with jonah too…it’s awful!
saline worked MIRACLES for him- poor baby got squirted at every diaper change, if not more…it worked! …something about the pressure of the squirt and draining and stuff…we just used regular, adult, store-brand nasal saline spray (I looked at Little Noses and it’s the exact same ingredients only a heck of a lot cheaper!)
June 8, 2006 at 10:33 pm #9399AnonymousInactiveLaura-Yeah, my mom was just explaining that sometimes ear infections can be resistant to antibiotics… I never heard anything like that when Austin was a baby…it’s so weird finding out so many things have changed in the 6 years since my older one was a baby!!!
ty for the info on saline I’ll start giving it to Aidan maybe it’ll help!, Were the ear infections Jonah had resistant to ALL antibiotics, or was their one that helped? (I only ask because my friends son started out like Aidan, Amox. didn’t fix anything, and now he is on his second set of tubes, and has almost constant ear infections…just don’t want to go down that road)..Oh, and I saw his picture on the little gerdling site (Aidan’s in there 2) He is such a cutie!!
June 9, 2006 at 10:36 am #9427hellbenntKeymasterthanks!
um, the 1rst ear infection was cleared up with amoxicilian- is that the ‘common’ one they give first?
then came the next one (or one after that) that didn’t clear up- I think eurithromiacin finally helped
I can’t remember what came next, but we were headed for tubes…I know a LOT of folks here on the board are very pro tubes, but we were very hesitant and were desperate to avoid them…my ped is awesome (not for reflux, lol) and is the one who said that the next stop would be an ENT, but in the meantime, try the saline…
voila!! not another ear infection for 6 months…
I really should keep better track of what antibiotics have worked- he’s only had a few since this all happened- it was around a yr? anyway, he went to preschool this year (2yrs old–>) & had a couple but I do think it’s just from being exposed to so many germs. It seems Jonah is one of those kids who, if he gets a cold, all that congestion/fluid/moisture somehow makes it to his ears…I know I was one to always get a cough as a kid…
June 23, 2006 at 2:52 pm #10401AnonymousInactiveI dont’ know what the deal with bananas are – but they make my adult reflux act up!! (hot dogs, pizza, oranges, lemonade, peanuts are the only other things that aggrivate my reflux). As far as fruits – my son was/is a big fan of berries, pears, apples, and PRUNES!!! yah, I know – he’s crazy!
How old do kids have to be to get ear tubes? My son just saw an ENT – cuz I suspected he may have sleep apnea and he said Logan had LARGE tonsils and adnoids and that they should be taken out. Also, they said he had fluid trapped behind his ears – he said that’s common with kids that have large tonsils, because they push on the drain tubes for the ears and close them off. So, Logan is getting ear tubes also – he turns 3 in 2 weeks. (I never knew if Logan has ear infections because he was cranky ALL THE TIME from his sleep issues – the doc said he may have had them, but they can clear up on their own too – so I guess I didn’t hurt him too bad – yikes!)

June 23, 2006 at 8:04 pm #10408AnonymousInactiveI never knew my first had ear infections until he was 2 and they found a HUGE one at his well baby visit, after that I always just took him automatically whenever he got a cold just in case, I finally started getting the heads up that he had one when he started telling me his ear hurt LAST YEAR!!! (he was 5 then) I took Aidan in today for an ear re-check and the doc said he still had fluid in one ear but that it wasn’t infected so that’s good, Austin (the 6 year old) has moderatly enlarged adnoids which will probably have to be removed next spring if he gets another sinus infection (I mean come on why don’t they just take them out NOW, he doesn’t need them, and I’d ask them to take the tonsils while they’re at it!!!)
