Every time I give Noah solids and then follow it up with a little juice out of a cup, he always gags, coughs and throws up. This usually happens within 5 minutes of finishing his food. I’m usually only able to get 2 oz of solids and maybe a 1/2 oz of juice in him, so its not like he’s over stuffed. Does anyone else seem to have this problem? It only happens if I follow his solids with a liquid.

Lisa, could it have something to do with the thinness of the liquid? I know that you once mentioned that he has some issues tolerating thin fluids. Juice is actually much thinner than formula, so maybe if he is refluxing it, it is causing him to choke/gag on the way back down. Hailey also has this problem if I give her water from a cup (which she won’t take now anymore)- but hers was about a minute or so after finishing so I figure that some was still pooled at the back of her throat, and that was what was causing it. You could try thickening the juice and see if that changes things. Just some thoughts…

I forgot to mention in my first post, I’ve noticed Noah gagging and coughing lately and for no reason at all. He can be playing in his exersaucer and all of a sudden he gags as if there is something in the back of his throat. He has never done this before. Does this sound like a reflux thing? Can liquids coming back up make you gag?

Liquids coming back up DEFINITELY make you gag!…and sometimes twice- gagging while it comes back up (you know how bad burping up digested food tastes…disgusting) and choking and coughing on the way back down. This happens to Hailey many, many times during the day and even more often at night.

Yeah Isaac gags and acts like he is choking alot. The ped told me to wait it out and when he is over the whole reflux thing then it will be gone!
