I honestly don’t know how much more I can take of this! April 26th, my boys went to the Ped GI and he upped both meds for both boys. He told me, which I asked specifically, not to cut the prevacid solutabs in half and once dissolved to throw the rest of the solution away (it even says that in the directions). I verified this with him several times because he doesn’t speak english very well and I wanted to make absolutely sure I was understanding him. So I have been dissolving one pill, per child, twice a day as directed, knowing that logan is getting more of the “granules” from the solution than directed. However, he has been doing GREAT! I have been doing that since the appointment. Had to get refills for both boys already since they are using two tablets per child per day instead of one. Well the insurance co will pay for two tabs for dakota but only one for logan. So I called the Doc office to have them get it pre-authorized and fought with his nurse. She tells me to split the pill. I tell her THE DOCTOR told me not to do that. So she has him call me. He tells me that since we have no other choice I have to split the pill. No my BIG problem is that Logan is used to getting probably close to 15mg per dose since even though he only gets 2.5ml’s of the 5ml’s he is still getting almost all the granules. I know have to cut him back with a split pill giving him 7.5 dissolved in 5ml’s and give only 2.5ml’s of that so he is cutting his meds. He is doing well on the way it is administered now, (how he originally told me how to do it) and I am afraid that the reflux will end up getting worse again with this new way! I know I am rambling I am just SO frustrated!

Sorry about my lousy attitude , it’ been a lousy “Reflux” day around here and I’m sick of it, too. At least my boy is properly medicated, so I should be in a better mood.
I hope you can get Logan to remain on the dose that’s helping him.
Does it specifically say on the package instructions not to split the pill? If it does, I’d call or fax the drug manufacturer and ask them to kindly inform your doctor that the pill shouldn’t be split and thus BOTH of your children will need two tablets per day in order to be properly medicated. If they are unmoved by your plight, remind them that there are other PPI’s out there that are easier to measure more precisely, and that it is their responsibilty to educate doctors on how to correctly prescribe their drug so that it is administered properly and has the desired effect.
Good luck, and sorry that you are going through this.
