I was so glad when my Mom found your article about infant acid reflux. Our
son Joshua was born June 14, 2002. He started having “formula problems”
before he left the hospital (hard stools on Prosoybee). We went from
Prosoybee to lactose-free to Isomil to finally Carnation Alsoy, which seemed
to work the best. All the formulas made his tummy hurt with hard stools
(even with syrup in bottles and/or he didn’t digest it very well). He has
already had two ear infections and bronchitis infection. All the above
formulas and/or medicine had a “honeymoon period” like you mentioned in your
article. After his last ear infection, he didn’t digest the Carnation Alsoy,
so the doctor said to try Nutramigen (big mistake). Also during this time,
we tried rice cereal, and that really hurt his tummy.
Finally, the ped doctor set us up with a GI specialist. He said that Joshua
had the signs of the infant acid reflux (bucks, voice hoarse, thinking that
formulas didn’t work, tummy hurts, not sleeping good at nights, and very
uncomfortable). The GI specialist had Joshua take 1cc of Zantac three times
a day. The first day worked good and he wasn’t hoarse. We also started a new
formula that my babysitter found (organic soy from Clover’s). After the
third day, Joshua had a bad diaper and didn’t want his last bottle of the
day. Also my husband thinks he is worse after he takes the Zantac (of course
he didn’t sleep well that night, either). The morning of the 4th day, Joshua
had a runny diaper with an extra bad smell. I put Joshua back on Carnation
Alsoy, because it has worked the best of all formulas. I will call the GI
specialist first thing Monday morning. My next visit to the GI specialist I
plan on taking your article and sharing it with the doctor because so much
of it describes Joshua. I hope with your info and the doctor seeing Joshua
again, we can figure out what works best for him. Hopefully, I don’t go
crazy first.
I also think that our second daughter (age 6) probably had acid reflux
starting as an infant, but not as bad. We are starting to give her Tums
before she eats.
Thanks again for your web site article. It gave me hope that things will get
better.
