Hi all,
My 2nd child is currently 15 weeks and has GERD and MSPI. We knew right away at 2 weeks she had GERD as this is our second GERD(and MSPI) baby. My son was controlled with Alimentum and Prilosec. Because of the success we had with Prilosec with my son that is what we started our daughter on but unfortunately we didn’t see results she needed and moved on to Prevacid which helped more. Inbetween med changes we also tried hypoallerganic formulas but it didn’t make a difference so when we went to finally see a pedi GI he placed her on Neocate and the response has been wonderful. She stopped writing in pain due to her feedings and the mucus has been increasingly getting better it seems. Unfortunately, she still has issues with reflux and has a lot of break throughs and flares and I am having to adminster MCS quite often. It seems that when her reflux is not controlled she vomits. Our pedi has said that may be due to her being nauseous and her gag reflex kicking in. We upped her dosage of OTC Prevacid from 7.5mg 1x/day to 7.5mg 2x/day but ended up with insomnia causing her not to nap at all and barely sleep at night and I suspect it caused poor napping to begin with so now I am on the hunt to figure out our next move and get her off Prevacid.
I am hoping OTC or self compounded Prilosec(or Zegerid) will work since we have now been on the proper formula before moving on to Nexium. Although, I don’t think our GI thinks my daughter’s reflux is significant and needs attention which is why Im doing the research myself. He believes her MSPI is the direct cause of her reflux and expects to get her off meds soon so he wouldn’t even increase her Prevacid except for when I told him point blank to.
She is a much harder cookie to crack then my son was though, that is for sure!

I’d also look into zantac – TELL dr you need a rx-max dose by weight is 10mgs per kilo- look in Medicines Forum –Prevacid 101 has a link to proper zantac dosing- don’t just take my word on it!zantac can be given 4hrs seperate from the PPIthis might help you w/ breakthrough acid…October 25, 2013 at 12:10 am #72640AnonymousInactiveWELCOME!!!! Sadly…. often times (but not always) Subsequent children have more problems than the previous child. 🙁 My second son was worse than my first in some ways but because we knew what we were dealing with, we got onto treatment faster. I hope that your little one can continue to get better!
Please take the time to read about what we finally found to help our children…. http://help4acidreflux.wordpress.com/a-detailed-account-of-what-all-we-went-through-with-our-children/
October 25, 2013 at 11:26 am #72641AnonymousInactiveThanks!! I think slowly but surely we are getting things figured out. Maybe, lol. These children always like to throw wrenches in the plan when you think you finally figure things out.
The move off Prevacid has been a positive one though so I know we are moving in the right direction!
