I am new to this site, so glad it’s here! My 4 month was diagnosed with Reflux the day after she was born. My oldest daughter, now 3, had it and we could tell this one had it too. We immediately put her on Alimentum and at first that helped. Right at 8 weeks, she quit eating. Just had no interest in it any more. Cried when I tried to feed her, but other than that; happy as a clam. Her doctor told me the reflux was worse, but I didn’t believe her because this baby was so happy and didn’t scream, throw up across the room, and slept great. We eventually put her on Protonix and now we are on Neocate. I have to force feed her 4 ounces every 3 hours. Some times she eats okay, sometimes she screams when the bottles in her mouth and will only eat 2 ounces in that hour. I think if I didnt’ try to feed her she wouldn’t care at all. She eats better in the evenings but very inconsistent. She averages between 21-23 ounces a day. She is not growing quickly and that is why we are testing.
She had a normal upper GI, and past the “suck and swallow test”. We are now being sent to a pediatric gastroenterologist. We are going to have to travel to Kansas City, MO for our appointment- does anyone have a good doctor there? Also, have you had any experience with silent reflux? She spits up about once a week, does not cry, but refuses to eat and is having difficulty gaining weight.Any tips would be soooo much appreciated!October 30, 2012 at 5:44 pm #71131hellbenntKeymasterYes! silent reflux! poor baby!

November 3, 2012 at 10:36 pm #71136AnonymousInactiveHello and welcome!! HUGS for you and baby from me!! I’m sorry she is struggling!
My children were NOT silent refluxers at all but I know of many other moms who had/have babies with silent reflux. 🙁
My assumption is that when a baby doesn’t want to eat it is because they associate the bottle/food with pain. It must hurt either when the milk is going down or coming up. If your baby has acid reflux coming up into her esophagus (even if she isn’t spitting up) it causes pain. The acid that is coming up kills the good live bacteria (probiotics) that coat the entire lining of the digestive tract. So when this lining which is a protective coating is gone then the reflux really BURNS and can cause the esophagus to become raw and inflamed.
Have you ever tried giving your little girl a probiotic supplement?
November 4, 2012 at 8:30 pm #71138AnonymousInactiveHi Beccajo123,
I, too, have the same problem. My 6 month baby used to have silent reflux. I believe he has outgrown it. I don’t see any signs of the reflux anymore. No hiccupps, he sleeps wells, no choking, or gagging. But I think he has developed feeding aversion even though his reflux is gone. I sleep feed 100%. I don’t know what to do anymore.November 4, 2012 at 9:03 pm #71139hellbenntKeymasterwelcome!

November 5, 2012 at 10:41 am #71143AnonymousInactiveThank you so much ladies for the info! this is exactly what I need, I feel like info is power and I’m willing to try anything. We see a Ped GI on Wednesday, so any advice or good questions would be helpful, thank you!!
November 5, 2012 at 9:17 pm #71144hellbenntKeymasterwell, me, I’d want to know what’s happening in baby’s esophagus, I’d ask for an endoscopy at this point. This sounds scary, but you’ll get a picture (seriously, there’s a camera that goes in the esophogus) & they’ll look to see how irritated it is ( very irritated would mean meds aren’t high enough or aren’t working, etc), they’ll take biopsies ( they look for presence for eos cells, which indicate allergy, allergy to protein in diet, formula or breast milk) and tell them to look for thrush, yes thrush. Baby can have it in esophogus & not in mouth, etc & it’s very painful and it might be an easy answer as to why baby doesn’t want to eat…
Ask for the med called carafate & also read up about proper PPI doses and TELL dr what your baby needs…
The search button is at the upper right hand corner of this page- search going back 6 months & Older…search carafate and make sure you go through Prevacid 101

November 6, 2012 at 12:47 pm #71145AnonymousInactiveTHANK YOU!! After reading several threads i have LOTS of questions!!
November 6, 2012 at 12:57 pm #71146hellbenntKeymasterplease please read prevacid 101, as you medicine most likely (protonic) isn’t the proper dose or form! There isn’t dosing info for protonix per se, but there is a dosing chart & look at the doses for prilosec, prevacid & nexium- you’ll get the idea- I can’t recommend ‘the products’ highly enough! you’ll see a link to them from prevacid 101 and you’ll get an explanation, too, of course
wait, here you go:
Prevacid 101:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1
Marci Kids PPI Dosing Chart (look for this in Prevacid 101)
You can also try some mylanta cherry supreme before naps/bed? just space it 4hrs from the protonix.
Mylanta Cherry Supreme is the one variety of mylanta that does not contain aluminum.you can’t find it anymore, but you can find store brand equivalents. Try rite-aid, cvs brand, walmart, target, Bartell Drug (West coast), Dollar General, brand names: Geri-Care & Geri-Lanta Supreme, meijer, etc- just look for one that does not list aluminum in the ingredients. you can give 1ml up to 5 times a day- it’s safe, even for newborns. if you see loose stools back off.
You can purchase these products (‘the products’ also linked to in Prevacid 101) at:

& learn about them here: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14939

November 8, 2012 at 1:05 pm #71157AnonymousInactiveThanks for all the advice! She was diagnosed with DGE, however,we didn’t do a scan to prove it so we’ll trial with meds. We are switching to Prevacid 15mg and Erythromicin. Here’s hoping!
November 8, 2012 at 1:11 pm #71158AnonymousInactiveAge Dose per day (mg/kg/dose) < 3 months 1.5 to 1.75 mg/kg three times per day 3-6 months 1.25 to 1.5 mg/kg three times per day 7 months to 2 years 1 to 1.25 mg/kg three times per day > 2 years 1 mg/kg two or three times per day > 5 years 0.75 to 1 mg/kg two times per day I checked out the dosing chart, but it says something like 1.5mg of Prevacid 3 times a day. We are on the solutabs, is 15 mg a LOT more than that?
November 8, 2012 at 4:13 pm #71163hellbenntKeymasterit’s 1.5 mgs PER KILO, so find your baby’s weight in kilos, multiply it by 1.5 and that’s your ONE DOSE; you then give that dose TWO MORE TIMES a day
November 8, 2012 at 4:47 pm #71166AnonymousInactiveoh, okay thanks. So that would be 7.5/dose. He prescribed twice a day, but really we should be doing it 3 times a day?
is it okay to put in her mouth and let it dissolve?
November 8, 2012 at 5:06 pm #71167hellbenntKeymasterthere’s a link (I think there is) in Prevacid 101 that tells tips & tricks for using solutabs. when you use them you must give on am empty stomach & follow w/ a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later- this is why many prefer to use ‘the products’ – this is explained in ‘prevacid 101’
