My son is 4 months and finally on a good dose of prevacid. he is eating more easily and seems happier. The problem is that the sleep is just getting worse. He is up now every 30-40 minutes at night.
Important to note that he is also on his third cold since the September. He is still sleeping in the Fisher Price rock and play on his back and swaddled (he won’t sleep without the swaddle). He also takes a pacifier.I would be so appreciative of any advice.October 27, 2012 at 12:43 pm #71110AnonymousInactiveI’m sorry your little one is waking up so much at night. 🙁 That sure wears on the mom!
My little girl (almost a year old) has had a cold quite a bit lately too. She norally sleeps all night but due to so much phlegm and coughing she hasn’t been sleeping too well.
She has 8 teeth and every time they came in she got a cold and so I’m thinking maybe she’s getting more teeth again.
I feel that her immune system is low and although she doesn’t suffer from digestive problems she has tended to have a cold off and on since she was born. (I think this may be due to being put on antibiotics right after she was born) I hate it that she’s headed into winter this way so the last couple of days I’ve been trying to figure out how to get her immunity built up. Here’s what I’ve been trying…
Good multivitamin… although babies are supposed to get their vitamins from formula, I personally don’t think they get enough. I am sure that there are multi-vitmains out there just for babies but I asked the Core Health Products company where I get my daily vitmains from if it was ok to give them to her and they said that was fine. So I just started yesterday. They are in capsule form and I just opened them up and mixed them with a little water and gave with a dropper.
Probioitics… probioitcs make up a majority of the immune system although I already give her probiotics every day I believe that I need to up her dose.
Eccencial Fatty Acids (EFAs)…. I just recently learned that EFAs are also very crucial to the immune system so I beings I take them I also asked the company if I could give them to my baby. They said yes. They are in a gel capsule form so I poke a hole in them and squeeze out the liquid on a spoon and she drinks it. It must taste better than it smells cause she acts like it tastes fine.
Grapefruit seed extract…. this is a natural antibiotic that kills bacteria and fungus. I have some around that are a tablet and mixed one yesterday with water but it didn’t dissolve well. So I’m thinking about getting some are tasteless in a powder form. http://stores.diannecraft.org/Detail.bok?no=22 That link it to a store that has them quite a bit cheaper than others. They are recommending them as something to help kill bacteria or fungus in the gut but I’m pretty sure they would also help with a cold or virus.
Airborne… We use this at our house when we feel a cold coming on and most of the time it really works to keep the cold away. So I’ve been lettin Shiloh drink some of it too lately. Hopefully it will help.
I had been using a bulb syringe to try to get out her snot but last week someone recommended I get a http://www.babycomfynose.com/. I have only had it for a couple of days and it works lots better than the bulb syringe. I think that getting all that stuff out helps her feel better.
Hyland’s brand cold meds…. I like these really well for sure the Night time stuff. They help quite a bit.
We also have a nebulizer that we got for Jackson when he was a baby and had brochiolitis. I have found that by giving her a breathing treatment of Albuterol before she goes to bed helps open things up more for her.
Last night we got out our vaporizer and put that in her room. I think that the warm mist is supposed to help loosen up stuff.
Vicks… I like to rub vicks on her chest and feet. I read somewhere that if you put vicks on a child’s feet and then socks it can help a cough. Kind a weird but seems to help. We also put vicks in the vaporizer.
Last night she acts like her ear hurt so I found some eardrops that I had bought awhile back and put them in her ears last night. http://www.nutribiotic.com/ear-drops.html
As you can tell, most of these things I have just started trying but I hope that soon Shiloh can be well. I of course haven’t been doing all those things at once but just thought I’d share all my ideas. She is really is not terribly sick or anything but I’m just tired of her having a cold all the time. She is still pretty cheerful during the day and this morning she acts perfectly fine except for a runny nose. She is happily playing with her brother now. 🙂 Happy Mom2012-10-27 12:48:09
October 27, 2012 at 2:38 pm #71113hellbenntKeymasterwhat form of prilosec? are you useing tummy care max, or ay of the products? look for link abot products and PPI use, in general here:
Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1
if not, then it’s common for there to be issues at night…you can add some zantac in at night to see if that helps- make sure to space 4 hrs from the prilosec
we found that NOT sucking mucous helped- we used saline saline saline- we bought store brand adult kind- same ingredients as Little Noses & less money- we squirted saline OFTEN and just let gravity do it’s thing
we also used vicks in the vaporizer- and used vicks on chest & feet- at some point I found a ‘natural’ type vicks to rub on chest/feet- depends how you feel about it…

October 27, 2012 at 3:41 pm #71114AnonymousInactiveHmmm, good idea… what was the name of the adult saline you used? I’ve never used saline before on my children. But I bet Shiloh would appreciate something being squirted in her nose better than something being suctioned out.
And what kind of natural vicks did you use? Didn’t know there was such a thing.
I’m always enthused to learn new things. 🙂
October 27, 2012 at 4:55 pm #71115hellbenntKeymasterI can’t remember the brand- it was an oline group- but I serched & foud this home made recipe on mothering.com:
homemade rub:
Vapor Rub
1/2 teaspoon eucalyptus essential oil
1/8 teaspoon peppermint essential oil
1/8 teaspoon rosemary essential oil
1/8 teaspoon clary sage essential oil
1/4 cup olive oil
Mix ingredients together in a glass bottle (not plastic as the essential oils will bleed into it making the rub less effective) and shake well. Massage onto chest as often as needed

October 27, 2012 at 7:18 pm #71116AnonymousInactiveSorry. I should have changed the signature. B is now on 3 ml of prevacid 2x day. We sometimes use zantac before bed but he hates the taste so I often substitute mylanta since he takes that better. Should we be using something else?
i will try just saline tonight.October 27, 2012 at 10:30 pm #71117AnonymousInactiveThank you Laura! Do you have any other “tricks up your sleeve” that might help a baby get over a cold faster?
October 27, 2012 at 10:42 pm #71118AnonymousInactiveLeah’s mom… at one point I think you said your doctor recommended giving your little one Florastor probiotics? Did they help any? That is a great brand to use while on antibiotics because it is the only brand that I have found so far that isn’t killed by antibiotics. But it has only one strain of probioitcs in it and might not help as much as a probiotic that has 8 or more in it.
The probiotics will coat the throat, stomach, and intestines and if your little one is in any kind of pain they might help him feel better. Many babies are low on probiotics for sure if they are born by c-section or not nursed. And if they have acid reflux coming up their esophagus then it can be painful if the protective coating of probiotics isn’t there.
October 28, 2012 at 8:10 am #71121AnonymousInactivehe is on the probiotic already. Last night was the worst night yet. he wanted to eat? and kept waking but then could not eat. He ius taking about 26-28 ounces in the day now. this is a huge improvement from 20.
October 28, 2012 at 7:09 pm #71122hellbenntKeymasterOther remedies? hmmm…just using adult saline- like target brand or cvs brand and trying to find natural alternatives to vicks, etc.
another ‘thing’ is that benedryl is good for teething- rub it onto baby’s gums…it has to do w/ the fact that the teething makes drool, & the extra saliva has histamines & benedryl is an antihistamine…
what else? lol…can’t think of anything else off the top of my head…
leahsmom:
are you using the products to make your prevacid into a liquid? otherwise, f you’re getting it compounded (made into a liquid) by the pharmacy, chances are that’s it’s losing it’s effectiveness fairly rapidly…
please read about this is Prevacid 101…last post on the page: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1
from Prevacid 101:
You can now get the former marci-kids products (caracream, etc)- long story short- this is amazing news & they’re now being made & distributed under another name/company- same formulation, whoohoo! They are their own company & not affiliated with marci-kids or the University of Missouri: [The>Product is now available and being distributed by a group that is willing to take on the expense and operations of the following products:

October 28, 2012 at 8:03 pm #71123AnonymousInactiveThe pharmacy is making the prevacid into a liquid. They told us it was good for 30 days. The specialist told us that there was milk in the solutab….
October 29, 2012 at 1:29 am #71125AnonymousInactiveleah’smom… I’m glad his eating has improved. 🙂
Thanks Laura! As much as I don’t want to take Shiloh to the doctor I think I will tomorrow. We were plannin on leaving Wed morn for a couple of days and leavin all 3 children with Grandma and don’t want her to have a sick baby on her hands. Shiloh has had infant phnemonia when born and had respitory problems since so want to make sure she’s ok.
October 29, 2012 at 1:31 pm #71126hellbenntKeymasterliquid is good because you don’t have to time around meals BUT your pharmacist is WRONG. You don’t have to believe me, but tell her/him to humour you & say you want it made it 2 week batches.
See for yourself- take notes. Do you see that your baby’s symptoms get worse the farther into the RX?PLEASE read Prevacid 101. Please. Look at dosing and everything.(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1thanksOctober 29, 2012 at 8:49 pm #71128AnonymousInactiveI too will testify that liquid Prevacid does NOT last more than 2 weeks. When I first got it for Quinton they said it would last a month but then later said it would only last 2 weeks. That worked much better!!
