I need help figuring out what makes my DS get his acid reflux. I know his MSPI is the main culprit, but now that he is on solids I find that there are certain things that make it a long night because he is so uncomfortable! Like, last night he was up every hour…I gave him some Zantac, some Mylanta Cherry Supreme, and tried elevating him. The Zantac does nothing!! The Mylanta Cherry Supreme only helps for about an hour coating his throat, and he wouldn’t settle down long enough to realize the boppy would help elevate him. Ugh!! He is now on Goat’s Milk per Pediatric Naturopath and he has an appointment on the 30th with a Pediatric GI! I just need to find out who else has rough nights? How do you figure out what caused it? Are they fine in the morning like nothing was wrong last night? And also does the vinegar smell coming from his mouth caused from acid coming back up? HELP!!
*Another Post*
So with my DS starting solids I have decided to keep a food journal. He will try one thing for 4 days and if no reaction I will put it on his ‘safe’ list! I will no longer give him Zantac since it does nothing! I will continue to give him Mylanta Cherry Supreme when I can tell his throat burns. I give him a liquid multi vitamin everyday because I give him goats milk so he needs the added nutrients. The goats milk is thickened with rice cereal and all his formula has been thickened with rice cereal since being diagnosed with MSPI/Reflux. Therefore, I know he is good with goats milk and rice cereal. Everything else will be trial and error from now on. I thought I could get away with giving him multiple kinds of baby food because he has been doing so good, but I was wrong!! I think I will try the Digestive Enzyme too. Never hurts to try! It would be nice for him to have whatever he wants to eat! What do you think?! Worth a shot to add that with his daily dose of multi vitamins?!
Also, when I was reading your blog I noticed you said your son would sleep with his head and neck crooked upwards! So does my DS!! Must help the pain! Did either of your sons have the vinegar smell in their mouth?!
*Update*
Last night was horrible!!!
1)Why is acid reflux in my son always worse at night? He usually never has an episode during the day (he doesn’t sleep longer then 2 hours during his naps), but at night in the last week he is horrible at night!!
2)He has been coughing alot lately and grunting. Is that another sign?!
See alot of this is new to me again because from 1 month to 6 months he was doing great on our regimen, but life changed so things changed and now it is starting all over again! Ahhhh!!

I know the feeling of wanting to figure out the CAUSE of the reflux. For my children I finally discovered that it was lack of enough probiotics and enzymes.
Probiotics are what naturally coat, line, and protect the entire digestive tract. They also aid in digestion. Many babies are low on these. Which is why when “stuff” comes up the throat it can hurt so badly. If a baby is low on probiotics they can also be low on digestive enzymes. These are what help break down our food properly.
You can read more about this in my blog. (see signature)
I hope that you can soon find help!

August 16, 2012 at 11:59 am #70782AnonymousInactiveYes, I would definitely say the enzymes and probiotics and enzymes would be “worth a shot”. 🙂 I can’t promise anything but I do know that they have helped many babies and adults too.
My mother-in-law who used to suffer a lot from reflux said she found that tipping her head back eased the pain some. I’m not sure why though. So I assume this is why babies do that too. I noticed my boys had funny smelling breath but can’t remember if it smelled like vinegar though. I hear many mom say that reflux causes strange smelling breath and often it is described as smelling kind of sweet.
August 16, 2012 at 12:05 pm #70783AnonymousInactiveThanks!! I want to give him a clean slate. How long should I wait before giving him another kind of baby food?! He just had baby food yesterday. I want to start with avocados, but I want a fresh body. Any idea?!
August 16, 2012 at 12:16 pm #70784AnonymousInactiveWell, I really don’t feel like I can give very good advice on when and how to try new foods. I think that one of the other moms can answer that question better than I can. One of them should soon be chiming in. 🙂 If not I’ll be back on here tonight (I’m going shopping today and going to grandparents for supper) and I’ll see what I can do to help. 🙂
August 17, 2012 at 2:58 pm #70786hellbenntKeymasterthere are all kinds of links – check out the mspi forum and also the TED forum – even though your child isn’t on a Total Elimination Diet (TED), you can get some great ideas!
I would give new foods in the morning. I would give ‘safe’ foods for lunch dinner. Your baby actually doesn’t ‘need’ food yet, so you can even hold off until 7 or 8 months…that is if you just get too frustrated trying to find something he tolerates. How long has he been on the goat’s milk? the rice? the vitamin? what’s IN the vitatmin? any hidden milk or soy?
August 17, 2012 at 3:11 pm #70788AnonymousInactiveThanks!! Well, like you said I have decided NO solids until at least 9 months old. I just can’t handle the ups and downs right now. I will fully focus on him seeing a specialist!! So I won’t worry right now about the solids. Right now he is 7 months 3 weeks old. He has been on rice cereal since Week 6 Day 3 because his doctor wanted his formula thickened. He has been on goats milk and the multi-vitamin since 6 Months and 3 Weeks. It’s a gluten, yeast, milk, and soy free vitamin. Ahhh!
August 17, 2012 at 5:04 pm #70790hellbenntKeymasterWell, I might try avocado in the morning and see how the night goes. I only say avocado bcse it’s so full of good fat…
this thread (string of posts) is long, but might help?August 18, 2012 at 3:09 am #70794AnonymousInactivePlease take the time to again go to my blog and read “Have probiotics, enzymes, or alkaline water helped you or your child?”
