I posted this on the procedure section, but need some quick advice, so I copied my post here.
I am eager to have my 2 year old get an upper
endoscopy on Thursday (tomorrow). Whatever will bring us
closer to the answers, I will welcome with open arms. (I know the
endo’s don’t always show the issue, but for now, I’d like to cling to
that hope. If it doesn’t, I will cross that bridge when I get there).Anyways, here are the specifics and my question:
Hospital check in time: 9:15 AM
Procedure time: 10:45 AMLast time he can have solids: 8 hours prior – so 2:45 AM
Last time he can have clear liquids: 3 hours prior – so 7:45 AM.Okay,
so I am really freaking about the timing of this. Especially when my
little one wants to comfort eat every hour on the hour when he wakes up
in the morning, and he knows how to ask for food and water, but isn’t
old enough to understand why he can’t eat.I have had thoughts
of keeping him up really late, or waking him up in the middle of the
night for a meal, to see what I can cram down him (if he will eat
anything). And then in the morning, just pumping him with enough clear
liquids as I can.Anyone have experience with this and figure out
how to make the no food thing easier? I am envisioning the worst. A
combination of his reflux mixed with hunger just scares me – and not
eating from bedtime (8pm) the night before until 10:45 AM the next
morning I know will not work.Any/all thoughts are welcome – any and all thoughts before we go in tomorrow will be gladly received. Thanks!

It seems like a good idea to feed him at the last moment possible even if it means waking him up. When my 6 week old son had to have a barium enema he had to go a long time? without eating. It was very stressful! 🙁 I just paced the halls of the hospital with my screaming baby. 🙁
I hope that things go better for you than did us! 🙁
Once the GI wanted to do an endoscopy on my son and I hated the thought of it. I feared that all they would say was “He has reflux and an inflamed esophagus” and then try a different med to cover up the symptoms. Luckily we never did the scope because my boys started drinking alkaline water and the symptoms were relieved so much that I didn’t feel the scope was necessary.
I certainly hope you find and get some real answers because I know that desperate feeling of searching and hoping! 🙁 Happy Mom2012-08-08 12:19:50

(a good thing – yet slightly dissapointed there is no immediate idea of what is wrong. Now waiting on the biopsy results in several days.)
My son was at his best today – a rare day when there are no signs of reflux. Which made everything easier. But I was absolutley stunned the no food thing didn’t phase him. He had a pediasure at 2am (all I could get him to drink), and then apple juice at 7:30am.
He was FINE even up through 11am when his procedure started. The Children’s Hospital in Aurora, CO was amazing – there was no waiting once we arrived at our check in time. There were about 6 different people, nurses, dr.s, anathesiologist, etc who we met with to help answer questions and explain the drill. There were lots of toys to play with, while waiting in between these visits. My little guy did such a good job all around, handling the stress, lack of food, strange people etc.
Whew! Glad its done. And THRILLED it went SO WELL! Thanks for your ear!
